Official Website: Picture of the Day

For those of you who don't venture onto the site much, every day they do a "shot of the day" and post a picture of some part of Chelsea's past, whether it be a player, a match, a celebration... Most shockingly, 95% of them go back beyond the start of our existence in 2003. Not quite sure how that is possible, but I'm reassured by Scousers and Mancs alike that it must be possible.

Anyway, by changing the number in the address bar, I have managed to get all the pictures posted on this section (over 150) and have a look at them. Now, there a lot going back to the 40s/50s that I just do not recognise, so I haven't saved any of these. Most are from the mid-90s, when I started to support the blues. I was thinking, the picture of the day can be posted in here and discussed. I've saved a fair few, so here's what I have, some great shots, stand outs are Wise in the San Siro and the fans holding the Ossie tribute sign.

Every day there is a caption, but there isn't a caption for these archives I'm afraid. Some of these will look great artified too, so I'll be getting to work on those.

Wisey taking a corner in the San Siro, I believe he went on to score a f**king great goal.

I think I've asked this in the past, but it kind of fits the topic so I thought I'd ask again...does anyone else have John Tennant's book "Football - The Golden Years"? I got it as a Christmas gift a few years ago and it's filled with great photos from the olden days of English football. There's a lot of Chelsea related pictures in it as well. I've been trying to see if I could find some of them online, but no such luck so far. Some of them are such great photos that they'd be well worth printing out, be put in a frame and hang them on a wall.

Can you not scan them in to your computer and send them to Gem so that she can do clever things with them e.g. make a gallery of them?

I could if I had a scanner.

Yes, I agree, absence of a scanner would be a bit of a drawback. I thought all you youngsters had every possible piece of equipment.

That is a brilliant black and white photo of the men in cloth caps on the terraces.

Many thanks gem for all your work.

I've been mainly investing in AV software and equipment so a scanner hasn't been too high on my list of priorities. It would be nice to have one, but it's not something I absolutely need at the moment. And if I did buy one, I'd get a really good one so that I could use it to scan stuff for my video and dvd projects. I just spent a few thousand euros on my computer a few months ago so any new purchases will have to wait a bit. I need to eat too!

And yesterday's photo, which I'm sure we all remember to this day:

The caption reads:

6 Oct 1996: Tributes to Chelsea vice chairman Matthew Harding who died in a helicopter crash a few days before the FA Carling Premier league match between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspurs at Stamford Bridge.

This one is in the book(Football - Golden Age) that I mentioned earlier. The caption is: "Cardiff City versus Chelsea at Ninian Park, March 1921."

There are some other great pictures in the book. On picture proves that not much has changed over the years when it comes to cup finals and tickets as there's a picture from 1962 and the caption is: "Tottenham Hotspur supporters protest the allocation of FA Cup Final tickets in Trafalgar Square. Spurs and Burnley are to receive 15000 tickets each."

And some things are not quite so new after all as there's a picture from 1951 with the following caption: "Brentford manager Jackie Gibbons commentates for blind supporters, who are admitted free and provided with headphones by the club." Not sure if blind people can get in for free at many grounds these days though.

There are a lot of great Chelsea related pictures as well. There's a picture of the Chelsea team that proves that fancy summer trips abroad have been done long before Roman came along as there's a picture of the team in a hotel swimming pool in 1963 with the following caption: "Tommy Docherty takes Chelsea on holiday to Cannes after winning the Second Division Championship." I doubt they did much to enhance the brand recognition of Chelsea in France, though.

Some great pictures and memories there, Gem!

Oh, and by the way - I couldn't make that game in Cardiff, I was only young and still had too many chimneys to climb up and clean that day - besides, I'd never have made it to the game in time anyway, as my penny farthing had a puncture ;)

You may joke, BlueBeard, but my grandfather used to go to away games in the 1920s and by all accounts he was mad enough to climb anything to get a better view. He'd be the short, frail-looking one sitting on his own in the middle at the top - apparently he was never very sociable! Fantastic pictures, Gem, you really do this site proud.
