Robinho has made the extraordinary claim that Manchester City are now as big as Real Madrid and Brazil - despite the club not winning a trophy since 1976.

City's Brazilian star is relishing the prospect of a new Premier League season after the club's remarkable spending spree this summer.

But his latest comments are sure to raise the odd snigger from millions of football supporters, not least those from across town at three times European Cup winners Manchester United.

Robinho said: 'Manchester City are thinking big and if I'm honest there is no difference between City and Real Madrid or the Brazilian national team.

'Everybody at those three teams now believes they are winners - and half the battle is won in the mind. We are now thinking big and when you think big, greatness follows.'

The City striker is adamant that the club can not only break the 'big four' monopoly this season but go on to win their first league title since 1968.

City boss Mark Hughes has already snapped up Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Gareth Barry and now Joleon Lescott in a £100m spending spree that has stunned the game.

The 25-year-old said: 'There have been some fantastic players signed for City this summer.

'But what is important for me is that there has been a big change in the club's thinking.

Last season had its frustrating moments for City star Robinho

'We no longer have the mentality of a small side and that will do a lot for the players at the club.

'When you act big you think big. We have proved we can take players from Arsenal and Manchester United and there are not many clubs in the world that can do that.'

'When I transferred from Madrid last summer there was a different mentality from that of Madrid because City were not thinking like a big club. This team now has real balance to it and I believe we are ready to compete, not in a few seasons but now.'

Robinho has hailed the signing of Tevez, but admits he remains disappointed that the club couldn't lure Kaka from AC MIlan in January.

Kaka has since made a sensational move to Real Madrid.

Robinho told the Sun: 'It was a shame we could not sign Ricky (Kaka) but he had his choices to make.

'We have signed some unbelievable players. To get somebody like Carlos shows what we are all about. It will be a pleasure to play with somebody of such talent.'

Robinho himself divided opinion last season, with some brilliant moments and 15 goals mixed in with ordinary performances, and many pundits claimed he would save his better days for matches at City's Eastlands home.

We'll see where they finish!

How many World Cups have Man City won exactly?

When you say "exactly", are you inferring that some people might guess a number with a decimal point in it? Like 0.00000000000000000000000001?

Exactly. He doesnt really say anything too crazy, but it makes me laugh because it sounds as if HE is part of the leadership that has now instilled a 'winning mentality'

He mustve picked that up last winter in Brazil, when he ran away because Kaka wouldnt sign

Absolute nutcase but I love the guy!

Westway Wonder, id have to say that the fact the rape allegation came out at the same time as he bunked to Brazil was a much larger factor than Kaka not signing.Im still amazed we have kept him here and everyone has stopped linking him elsewhere because he is "unhappy." He looks perfectly happy to me so it amuses me to hear him talking us up over the top. Last season he had, Benjani, Ched Evans and Caicedo to supply. Now he has Adebayor, Tevez an RSC. Im sure he must be happier.

I am sure he is happy as a clam now, and he will have bigger "names" and more experienced players to take up the mantle of leadership in that locker room. He can probably just go out an focus totally on his game. Also, now you seem to have a more cohesive squad, so I am sure that will help overall. However, just keep Bellamy off the links after a loss! I could see that nutter and Robinho getting in a training ground bust up, a la the one he had at Real Madrid

As far as the allegations against him, I remember hearing about that story, but I didnt realize Robinho was the target of those allegations. That being the cause of his sudden flight is all news to me
