coco
I hate the way the players piss about with selecting their squad numbers, it really does piss me off that we have no #7 and even worse, we have no #9. On top of that you have Ballack hogging the #13 shirt, maybe he should grab the #7 shirt, he may start having a bit of luck, who knows he may even score again. Rant over. PloKoon13
I think it's fair enough with a player like JT, who has had the number 26 (quite unusual) for his entire career, but in my opinion it would be better if we used the old system of having shirt nos 1-11 based on your position. 1 - goalkeeper (Cech) 2 - right back (Bosingwa) 3 - left back (A Cole) 4 - centre mid - maybe the more defensive one of the two (Essien) 5 - centre back (JT) 6 - centre back (Carvalho) 7 - winger - the more high profile of the two (Joe Cole) 8 - centre mid - the more attacking of the two (Lampard) 9 - centre forward - the big one of the two (Drogba) 10 - centre forward - the other one (Anelka) 11 - winger - the other one (Ballack, I guess...) It doesn't really help that we don't play with wingers. It would also help to identify players when you're watching a game with a team (or teams) you don't know all that well. Also, it would give that extra bit of spice to the youngsters if they got to play in the first team. There would be great prestige in wearing the no.7 shirt in the cup for us, but what the f**k does wearing the no.43 shirt mean? It would certainly make me feel like a more integral part of the team. The inflated shirt numbers just feel like a symbol of exclusion, of not being a 'real' part of the team.

Dont you think that the 10 should usually go to a attacking midfielder. I always relate 10 to a natural playmaker.
coco
Crespo was our last #9, maybe it will be another Argie who gets the #9 ?
Ruh Buh Juh
Crespo was our last #9, maybe it will be another Argie who gets the #9 ? Isn't Di Santo our number 9? I thought that was weird when it was announced last year, he's an unproven youngster and he gets a talismanic number...I think Nelks deserves the number 9, unless he's attached to #39 like JT to #26. Drogs is never going to change from #11, it's his favourite number. #7/9 should be for our marquee signing, depending on his position, striker gets the #9, midfielder gets #7. Actually, maybe he hasn't got the #9, it's not up in the site... Edited January 8, 2010 by Ruh Buh Juh

geezer
Dont you think that the 10 should usually go to a attacking midfielder. I always relate 10 to a natural playmaker. Generally yes however at Chelsea I tend to think of Ian Hutchinson who often wore the number 10 shirt so I would be more than happy with Anelka taking that shirt (plus it could be argued he's quite a playmaker himself)

I wouldn't mind seeing Joey in the no.7 shirt either. Let's hope he doesn't sink to Shevchenko levels of form.
charierre
i always preferred the old one to eleven , it gave the players a reason to fight for a particular shirt and be known as within the first team. The squad numbers of course are used for the commercial aspect of the game that is needed to help pay the wages of the players. As for the number 10 , I too go with the line it was the no2 attacker ...Hutch. The number 8 used to be the attacking midfielder , schemer or inside right whichever name you wish to choose. flasher10
Dunno about the No 7 shirt - it may be jinxed. Last three guys to wear it were Shev, Mutu and Bogarde.
BlueBosnian
I wish 1 through 11 would be used again. It just made it easier on the brain, and looked better.
Valerie
I wish 1 through 11 would be used again. It just made it easier on the brain, and looked better. I don't want to brag, but my brain can handle numbers over 11! But how would this 1-11 scheme work for subs? Would they have to put on the sweaty shirt of the player coming off? What if it's not a straight substition, a left back for a left back for instance? Would an all-out swapping of shirts take place, so everyone would have the right number for the right position? And players could have different squad number every week, depending on formation. Oh, those poor referees, their administration after bookings would be a right mess... I know, I'm being silly :) Edited January 10, 2010 by Valerie
Phillip
No, you are not being silly, Valerie. I think your reasons are why it is not done that way, since who knows who will be the starting right back one week over another, and to force players to change their jersey numbers based on whether they are starting or not seems crazy to me (and very bad for jersey sales, I presume).
