LAMPARD LANDS FOOTBALL WRITERS` AWARD

Posted 17/01/10 21:31

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard celebrated being honoured with the Football Writers' Association's Tribute award on Sunday night by insisting he still has plenty to offer the game.

The 31-year-old has experienced a huge amount of success during his 14-year professional career and that was recognised by the FWA as he received the annual award at an event at London's Lancaster Hotel.

Lampard started his career at West Ham under the tutelage of his father Frank Lampard Snr before moving to Chelsea in 2001 for £11million.

He has since gone on to win eight trophies - including two Barclays Premier League titles and two FA Cups - and has also won 76 caps for his country.

Previous winners of the award include Bobby Moore, Sir Alex Ferguson and Alan Shearer.

"It's unexpected for me, I'm not quite getting towards the end of my career yet but I'm very proud of what I've achieved and to get recognition for what I've achieved from the FWA is a huge thing," said Lampard, who scored twice in Chelsea's 7-2 win over Sunderland yesterday.

"The football writers are so hard to please. They see us every week. They are the critics of football and I'm very proud that they have seen me in this light.

"I'm really enjoying my football at the moment. You get to 31 and you know you are past the middle part of your career now and I just want to make it last as long as you can."

Last year's winner, Harry Redknapp, paid tribute to Lampard on the night while former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho took time out to write a glowing account of his time spent with the midfielder at Stamford Bridge.

"I am so proud to have worked with such a man," said the Inter Milan boss.

"When I am asked who are the best players I have worked with, I will always say that Frank Lampard is amongst the greatest.

"Not because he has been successful but because he is driven every day to become better."

funny thing with frank lampard, he's the exact opposite of the kind of player who flatters to deceive. even this year when he hasn't looked up to his usual high standards a lot of the time, he's still already managed to score 11 goals from midfield. i haven't counted his assists!

according to the prems official stats he`s got 8, joint 4th with Drogba. And i would guess hes got at least 4 in other competitions.

this is getting confusing! i'm sure on saturday i heard the commentator describe frank's first goal as his 10th of the season. that's where i got the 11 goals from. the bbc agrees.

Chelsea

Total (Club) 28 (2) 11 0 0

This season international

England 5 (0) 3 0 0

11 domestic + 3 international = 14 goals for the season

Cross purposes I think.

Drogba has scored 14 PL goals and 8 assists.

Frank has 8 goals and 8 assists.

According to the Telegraph, Frank has also created the most chances of any PL player with 65. Next best is Valencia with 58.

I wouldn't set a lot of faith in the Telegraph's stats. Have you seen who they reckon are currently the two best passers in the EPL !!!

Scoring from pens isnt too hard :)

I think no one can deny that he hasnt been offering a big threat from midfield this season, at least comapred to the last seasons.
