A tougher standard but still just preseason.

Looking for some sharpness from lampard, Torres.

Manu look sharp in the USA but in my opinion it's better to start the season slowly and build up. This remains a game to work on match fitness and experiment with formations.

Either way, it's a formation AVB seems to like and it's worked out alright so far in pre-season. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him give it a go against Villa because it'll be the best chance he has to see how likely it is to work in the Premiership.

If we were to play Josh that deep I just cant see it working with Lamps, even though he has done it for England fairly effectively. I would prefer an out and out DM, someone like Mikel. It also takes Lampard too far away from the part of the pitch in which he is the most effective, which would be daft. Why play someone like Lampard who is at his best when hitting the penalty area and getting beyond strikers so deep.

Lamps is wasted as a holding MF, in my opinion. With Essien down, Mikel needs to be our go-to deep MF.

He did but not for too long. Its a position he can play, and as I said has played it quite effectively for England. But it isnt a position he should be in, its complete waste of his talent and ability to hit the box late and score.
