Posted May 30, 20159 yr A mate of mine bought me the boxset of this a few weeks ago, as he knows I'm into mostly old comedies (despite my age of 31). Anyway, this style of comedy is obviously a bit dated, and the the programe is very sexist, but I cannot help but love it! Love the fact that they grew up on a fry up, chips for lunch, and then a pie and mash in the evening every day. Apparently it's what my nan always used to cook, not an inch of fat on here either I might add! I just love the whole era, also really into 'Whatever happened to the likely lads' at the moment. Anyway, any other series from around that time I might enjoy? I know it's a lot later, but I'm a massive fan of 'Auf Widersehen Pet' (I had to google how you spell that). Basically just like anything that's stuck in it's time, don't mind if it's a little dated.
May 30, 20159 yr The obvious ones are Steptoe, Dads Army ,Porridge,Bless this House,Man about the House,George and Mildred,Hi De Hi Less obvious , Get Some In, Citizen Smith ( currently being re run on Drama), Mind Your Language( could be considered racist now , not seen it since it ran) , I didn't know you cared, Selwyn Froggatt , Nearest and Dearest, It ain't half hot mum. To name but a few, there were lots of top comedy progs in the 70s, looking back at them though you do have to have an open mind and accept the language was part of the times.
May 30, 20159 yr The odd thing I remember about On The Buses was how all the blokes looked mid-forties,lived with their parents and were lusting after teenage girls.

Reg Varney was actually 55 when he did On the Buses bizarre how it was the norm back then for older men to play younger parts. Sid James was similar in doing this.

Plenty for me to check out today! The odd thing I remember about On The Buses was how all the blokes looked mid-forties,lived with their parents and were lusting after teenage girls. The funny thing is, they always seem to end up taking great looking girls out, not to sound offensive, but were girls that easy back then, or is it just completely unrealistic? I was born in the wrong decade I reckon.
May 31, 20159 yr you could also add Love Thy Neighbour and Alf Garnett into the mix, great comedies'..................
June 17, 20159 yr Dads Army still #1 No racism or homophobia, loads of laughs. A fair amount of racism from Corporal Jones to be fair, although (like Alf Garnett), the joke was always in him
June 17, 20159 yr Love the fact that they grew up on a fry up, chips for lunch, and then a pie and mash in the evening every day. We still do up North :)
June 22, 20159 yr Author Finally watched the film 'Holiday on the buses' the other night, had me in stitches, it's definitely the best of the films! Any other similar films out there?
