Scotland were subjected to a 5-1 loss in 1975, with goalkeeper Stewart Kennedy never getting over the experience of conceding three goals inside 20 minutes. Picture: Herald Archive

England v Scotland , May 1975 The entry of the two teams.

England won 5-1 . Scotland’s goalkeeper Stewart Kennedy never got over the experience of losing 3goals inside the first  20 mins England were really flying that day.

Worse was to come in the following years for Scotland, Alan Rough was to become Scotland’s no 1!!!, as a young lad, I would have some fun watching him and his mistakes, whether it was Scotland games or highlights of the Scottish league, I would eagerly await the Patrick Thistle highlights and Mr Rough

Alan Rough is rooted to the spot.
Zico scores with a superb free kick goal against Scotland.World Cup 1982.
To be fair, Zico on his day could do this v any team and goalkeeper.

Mid 70’s to mid 80’s as a lad and with Scotland being at a similar level or better than England at times there seemed a real rivalry, add in that we played every year in the home championships, Scotland was enemy no 1 to me as England went, when David Narey scored that goal in 82 against Brazil I was panic stricken, if Scotland won we’d never hear last of it, 4 years later in Mexico 86 and the rivalry had dimmed as England had moved into another league and so it has remained. Nowadays if I watched Scotland I would root for them unless playing England, not sure if I’ve matured, the rivalry dimmed or Scotland not a threat anymore.

It never really bothered me that much the rivalry.

Don’t get me wrong back then I wanted Scotland to beat England when they played.

However, I wanted England to do well in the tournament’s they played in. eg Euro 1980,88.

The  fact I have supported Chelsea since I got into football back in 1974 and also I have so many English relatives meant  I  have never been was ‘anti England’.

Best World Cup in my eyes, probably something to do with my age and everything else going on at time, O to be 21 again, but just seemed to build and build through tournament, football became fashionable, from New Order and World in motion, Gazza mania and England’s exploits to semi finals. I feel this tournament was head and shoulders above euro 96 which sadly ruined football in my eyes, as the replica shirt wearing, theatre going tourists highjacked the game, and football became big bucks

The Penalty Kick

http://thestrawplaiters.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Pitch2-2.jpg

The pitch markings of 1891 above an explanation.

The six yard arcs were measured from each post.
The 12 yard line marked the area in which a penalty could be awarded.

The penalty kick could be taken on the 12 yard line at a point of the kickers choosing.

All opposing players, including the goalkeeper had to be 6 yards away.

The dotted 18 yard line was therefore introduced to keep the the outfield players six yards back.

However, as the kicker usually took the penalty kick from right in front of goal, the 18 yard line was often only marked for the width of the goal.

Happy Birthday to Marco Van Basten, who is 56 years old today.

Here volleys home the Netherlands’ second goal during the Euro 1988 final against the Soviet Union.

A bit different but a very interesting account of the first international football match. Played between Scotland and England in 1872. The score was 0-0. All of the Scottish team were players from Queen's Park.

You're welcome. Like you, I love looking at old pictures and articles about the early days of football. Depending on where you lived in the U.K. determined the tactics you used. Some teams passed morel some used dribbling more. As for formations, more attackers than defenders.
