Unfortunately he wanted first team football when he came back from Swansea. He didn’t want to go on loan and it was a risk if he was ready to step in straight away. I’d wonder what the reaction would be if the board said we’re not making a centre back signing because humphries will be the lb/lcb after a good season in the championship?

You've earned your management, um, spurs.

FOREMAN: Anyone in the site office?

WORKER: Only management on his phone.

FOREMAN: Should we warn him about that out-of-control overloaded lorry careering towards the site office?

WORKER: Give me a minute to think about it.

I'd have been more than happy to see Guehi given a chance at the time. Fact is the opinions on this forum don't count in the club's buying/selling process - we employ people on big money to make these decisions and they f**ked this one up.

It's not a debate.

I really think that if our owners are serious about signing, using, and building a club around youth, they really need to stop buying other young footballers and start looking into the academy. It has over the last 10 years developed an amazing reputation for player development.

1. it will stop them wasting huge amounts of money on unknown potential

2. it will provide a pathway to the first team where youngsters will want to stay and develop with us. It would also stop players like Solanke, Musiala et all leaving

3. Regardless of what the yanks do, us fans will have a bond with the club.

4. means the club will hit whatever financial restriction targets in future with ease and allow us to spend, sometimes big, on players that will improve the 1st eleven.

We have a matching offer don’t we? And if Guehi really thought he should be starting over Rudiger, Silva, Dave, or Christensen coming off a champions league win then I don’t know what much more we could’ve done.

I love Silva, Dave both club legends. but even back then father time and writing was all over the wall for both players and both could have left there and then after the Champions league win. Their departures wouldnt have made any difference to what followed. Guehi went on to form a rock-solid partnership with Mitchell at Palace the season we sold him and hand on heart, I'd have him in our team over our recent 3 centre half signings. Mitchell should have been at this summer's Euros as our left back.

Anyhow, our loss is Palace and Englands gain. I imagine it would be a 50 million bid to get him back.

I'll be honest, i still think Tomori was and is a better player than Guehi.

Pffffft. Watch Tomori in Serie A as I do. Same old problems: suspect under pressure, flaky distribution. His RC against us in the CL summed things up. Picked up one against Roma last season too.

In fact, i'm not even sure he's better than Chalobah tbh.

Good player no doubt but he's being hugely overrated right now.

Pfffffft. Trev is an honest trier. I love him. Guehi's ceiling is way higher, even higher than the site office.

I watch him plenty and remember his time with us and stand by my comments.

Funny you say that, a mate of mine would happily take Chalobah in any swap deal plus cash for Murillo at Forrest as he thinks hes a better defender than the Brazilian... I just dont want us to dip into our pockets and find another 80 million on a player when we have the quality at the club in one shape or another.

Tomori should be in the England set up as well... I look at both players and think we missed out on both tbh... Imagine if we had just got Mitchell in as a left back, might have only cost us 20 million.

Both are terrific players and Tomori as well. Theyve done well in Serie A.

I also find it strange Southgate has ditched smalling who has also been outstanding in Serie A since moving there. If you want to play continental football at International level, you need players who play abroad. Anyhow, Spain Germany tonight, anyone fancy a bet on Morata or our mop haired left back Cucu scoring for Spain?

I hate myself for doing this and i don't endorse that stat nerd mentality but had to check for myself:

Eye test alone shows he's not better than either, stats seem to show the same

I have three options open to me: (1) treat my dog's chronic dermatitis; (2) skim the fat off the top of my freshly-made chicken stock; or (3) continue this lively debate.

I shall mull and get back to you.

I went with the chicken stock option. Wrestling with 11kg of Scottish Westie has limited appeal, compared to John McGinn he's a powder puff. If Steve Clark had her available they'd've won the Euros providing she didn't slide in studs up on the ref as he blew the first whistle.
