July 17, 200717 yr Jose has been quoted as saying our wingers are; Joe, Malouda, Robben and Kalou. I suppose it would make sense, if this deal is already done.
July 17, 200717 yr If we sell SWP then the putchase of Malouda makes no sense to me. Robben - predominantly left sided Malouda - totally left sided Joe - been left sided for a long time now however can shift to right side if need be Kalou - when playing out wide id better suited on the left hand side of a front three. SWP - right sided Maybe it is 'go easy on the opponents left back' year at Chelsea

July 17, 200717 yr I don't think JM see's SWP as a winger, he hardly used him there last season when selected, he played more as a midfielder! Firstly you have to able to beat a defender playing on the wing
July 17, 200717 yr He didn't play on the wing in the first match. SWP was on the right side behind Kalou.
July 17, 200717 yr Author Sorry to be a bore but -- once again -- might this open the way for another bid for alves?

I think Kalou can, I am not so suree about Malouda hoever that remians to be seen. However either way they are not nearly as effective on the right hand side as they are on the left which begs the question as to why we are happy to play players out of position even though it means they contribute less when we should focus on bringing in players who are fit for the position we need.
July 17, 200717 yr Sweepy was good at the end of last season so I don't think we should sell him. I don't see Kalou as a real winger. He's more of an attacker even though I guess he'll be used more as a winger. Malouda and Robben should keep to the left and Cole and Sweepy to the right.
July 17, 200717 yr Sorry to be a bore but -- once again -- might this open the way for another bid for alves? Spot on. ?12 M for SWP, and a reported 12, 13 for Alves. IMO a good deal, even considering the loss on SWP.
July 17, 200717 yr If we can get twelve million pounds for SWP - yep, there's a fool born every day! - then we should take the money and run. It would be nice to think we'd use the money to buy a certain right sided defender / right sided midfielder from Spain with it of course, rather than just putting it in the bank...

Agree with you there -- although something tells me that there is a chance that Alves may not adapt to the Premiership and Jose knows it. From all the reports coming out of the club purporting that he is in complete control, if he had wanted Alves we'd have got him by now, do you think?
July 17, 200717 yr I think Jose warmed to Sweep at the end of last season and will keep him Agree with you Tim - I doubt very much that Jose would sell a guy who has finally found his position, confidence and form. It would be pointless to sell a guy who the club has been extremely patient with, who is experienced in the Premiership and who fits into the group.
July 17, 200717 yr loz I think Kalou can, I am not so suree about Malouda hoever that remians to be seen. However either way they are not nearly as effective on the right hand side as they are on the left which begs the question as to why we are happy to play players out of position even though it means they contribute less when we should focus on bringing in players who are fit for the position we need. Malouda played on the right wing in the friendly and seemed fine there to me. But I agree with you about playing people out of position - makes no sense. TimW I think Jose warmed to Sweep at the end of last season and will keep him Jose praised SWP after the friendly and pointed out that he was playing inside (not on the wing) and how well he did. I don't think he feels he is a winger per se (or is not going to use him as such) hence the comments about wingers which left out SWP. As for selling him for ?12 million. After it might just look as if he will come good for us? When we have spent a couple of years working on him? Being patient with him? when he appears to really want to stay and make things work? After getting him integrated into the Chelsea team and work ethic? And we think selling him for ?12 million will make us look like the smart ones? Sorry, no way, if they can pay ?16 odd million for Darren Bent they can damn well dig deep into their pockets and pay up for SWP who would probably do very well for them and both sides know it. They want him? They can pay through the nose for him like we did. Kenyon does not need to count up the cash at the end of each night, shaking the bottom of his money sack, look dejectedly at Roman and sob "I need Alves so I guess we had better sell SWP and may be Robben to balance things up, is that okay?" Buck has already said money is available for future purchases. If that is the case, then if we really wanted Alves don't you think matters might have progressed by now? Has anyone thought that Jose has looked at Alves, Copa final included and decided he does not think he will adapt well either into the premiership or into this team given our defensive leanings? I realise we are trying to balance our books in time for 2010 but this is ridiculous. If it goes through the only people looking like mugs will be us yet again, for letting a player go that had great potential when he first came to us, then apparently lost that potential, then just when it looks like he may be getting it back again, we sell him for a great deal less than we bought him and have weakend our team to boot by losing a right winger! Glad I don't run my business like Chelsea run their transfer policy that's all I can say.
July 17, 200717 yr JM's on record as saying that SWP is best playing in the midfield alonside Lamps with the wingers outside him. His compeition is Ballack and Essien, depending on whether Essien's playing alongside Lamps or taking the Makelele role. The midfield has a lot of competition this year/ or a lot or rotation. Actually the whole team does: Cech (Carlo) Paulo (Glen) Ash (Wayne) JT (Alex) Ricky(Ben Haim) Maka (Mikel or Essien) Lamps (Sidwell?) Essien/Ballack (SWP) Cole (Kalou) Malouda/Robben Sheva/Drogba (Pizzaro) Nick
July 17, 200717 yr I have to admit that if the competition is Essien then poor SWP doesn't stand a hope and neither does Ballack. I still think Jose can find room for him, teams like MU manage it with all their players so why the hell can't we?
