bjd
Since we moved to Ireland we have discovered a cracking radio station - Phantom 105.2. It plays great stuff all the time mostly alternative, indie and rock. Last weekend to celebrate their first birthday they compiled listeners requests for their top 105 songs. I thought id post it here because its a good list with some top tunes, an obvious tune at number 1 but great to see Joy Div/NO, The Smiths, Pixies and JB in the top 10 - certainly makes a difference from Bohiemien f**king Rhapsody and Hotel Bleeding California. Bear in mind this is an alternative station so sorry, no 'Angels' im afraid. Special mentions for nos 102, 97 75, and for the record i voted for , no 9 , not because its my fave tune of all time but because it was a song i wanted to vote for that i thought would have the best chance of winning. See what you think fellow music snobs and let rip ... 105.2 C.S.S - Off the hook 104 The Flaws - 16 103 dEUS - Instant Street 102 Ryan Adams - NYNY 101 Sunshine underground - commercial breakdown 100 Cake - The Distance 99 La rocca - Waiting in the wings 98 The Presidents of the Unites States of America - Peaches 97 Modest Mouse - Float on 96 Brendan Benson - Folk Singer 95 Alice in Chains - Would 94 Autamata - Jellyman 93 Jane's Addiction - Stealing 92 Delorentos - The Rules 91 Metallica - Nothing Else Matters 90 Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box 89 Kings of Leon - Fans 88 Elvis Costello - Peace Love And Under 87 Journey - Dont Stop Believing 86 Sufjan Stevens - Chicago 85 Turn - Berretta 84 New Order - True Faith 83 Therapy? - Nowhere 82 Cold War Kids - Hang Me Out To Dry 81 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps 80 The Shins - Phantom limb 79 Ham Sandwich - Words 78 Foo Fighters - Best Of You 77 Faith No More - Epic 76 The Doors - Break On Through 75 The Breeders - Cannonball 74 Muse - Supermassive 73 NPB - Feeding Frenzy 72 Super Furry Animals - Rings 71 The Beatles - Helter skelter 70 Stone Roses - She Bangs 69 Nirvana - Lithium 68 Led Zeppelin - Immigrant 67 Jeff Buckley - Grace 66 Interpol - Slow Hands 65 eels - Novocaine for the soul 64 Arcade Fire - No Cars Go 63 Pavement - Shady Lane 62 Ben Folds - Army 61 Muse - Time Is Running Out 60 Arctic Monkeys - Dancefloor 59 Johnny Cash - Hurt 58 Placebo - Nancy Boy 57 PJ Harvey - This Is Love 56 Bloc Party - Banquet 55 Kings of Leon - California 54 The Smiths - how soon is now 53 Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm 52 The Jam - Underground 51 Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone 50 U2 - New Years Day 49 The Beastie Boys - Sabo 48 The Cure - In Between Days 47 Thin Lizzy - Waiting For An Alibi 46 Daft Punk - Da Funk 45 Guns 'n' Roses - Paradise 44 Iggy Pop- Lust for life 43 Massive Attack - Teardrop 42 Whiping Boy - We Don't Need Nobody Else 41 Pearl Jam - Alive 40 AC/DC - Highway To Hell 39 Radiohead - Paranoide Android 38 Primal Scream - Loaded 37 The Frames - Revelate 36 The Cure - Boys Don't Cry 35 Weezer - Buddy Holly 34 Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus 33 Jimi Hendrix - Watchtower 32 The Strokes - Last Night 31 The Flaming Lips - Do You Realise 30 Sound Garden - Black Hole Sun 29 Sex pistols - Pretty Vacant 28 Red Hot Chili Peppers Under The Bridge 27 R.E.M. - Kenneth 26 Pulp - Common People 25 Pixies - where is my mind? 24 The Clash - London Calling 23 The Doors - Riders On The Storm 22 Arcade Fire - Rebellion (lies) 21 Green Day - Basket Case 20 Rolling Stones - Paint It 19 The White Stripes Seven Nation Army 18 Guns 'N' Roses - Sweet Child O'Mine 17 Led Zepplin - Whole Lotta 16 Metallica - Sandman 15 Oasis - Live Forever 14 Radiohead - Just 13 Smashing Pumkins - Today 12 Kristin Hersh - Your Ghost 11 The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony 10 Queens of the stone age - No One Knows 9 Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart 8 Stone Roses - I am the resurrection 7 New Order - Blue Monday 6 Jeff Buckley - Halleluiah 5 Pearl Jam - Jeremy 4 Foo Fighters - Everlong 3 The Smiths - there is a light that never goes out 2 Pixies - Debaser 1 Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit Phantom 105.

clubhappy
Just noticed ''She bangs'' at Number 70 , 'Lust for life' is just a classic . Waiting for an alabi , Thin Lizzy , although they did have better songs, Teardrop Massive Attack gets my vote for a top 10 spot , and im surprised 'A town called Malice' is not even on the list . Nice one I could have got tickets for Pearl Jam's last gig in Dublin through the Ten Club. I intended to go with my daughter but she had exams and couldn't go - I didn't have the heart to go without her

Alan
SLTS at Number One? Bah, good song but not as good as some peoplem make out, Nirvana are overrated if you ask me.
Backbiter
I'm not exactly a big Pearl Jam fan. I think I am Mine is a great song, but I can't stand Jeremy and can't believe how it would get into anyone's top 10. I have to say I've barely heard half of that list. Will log onto my under-used Napster subscription and see what I've been missing. Anyone else baffled how Journey and Johnny Cash can make it onto a list dominated by Indie music? clubhappy
SLTS at Number One?Bah, good song but not as good as some peoplem make out, Nirvana are overrated if you ask me. Overrated pile of American sh*te if you ask me . I could never find anything remotely appealing about their music . I remember early 90's , ok i was an acid house head and was completely caught up in the whole dance scene but i never gave up my first love and that was GUITAR but that pile of sh*te was for Dublin 4 Art f**kin students who thought it was cool to ask for a Nirvana track . 12 months earlier they were Stone roses fans . ''Ya loike i had loike the very first copy in Oireland man ''. You can say it any way you want , but bottom line , The U.S. has been responsible for some of the worst music in history , Nirvana being in the top 10. bjd
Never the hugest fan of Nirvana (personally i thought their artistic peak was 'Bleach') but id never say they were sh*t and do appreciate just how an important band they were - everything changed because of Nirvana, that one album , maybe even that one song. Suddenly alternative music became mainstream music and whilst there were some positives in that, it also meant we were subjected to loads of awful new music (Silverchair anyone ? ) Say what you will about the USA, all forms of music stem form the USA. In fact i cant think of any scene or style that wasnt influenced by music from the US. Maybe apart from goth. But goth doesnt count. Talking about Pearl Jam, do any of you guys know or like Mother Love Bone ? One of my all time fave rock bands, they couldve and shouldve been massive. In fact i cant think of any scene or style that wasnt influenced by music from the US. Totally disagree with that. The Killers, American with a distinct British sound, or am I taking that out of context and you mean rock as a genre in all? What about Brit pop? Are you sure Goth originated here? So many questions for Shed End's John Peel

So many questions for Shed End's John Peel Yeah but the Killers are a simple New Order tribute band (and a poor one at that) Was Britpop a scene ? Really ? Or just a few bands with Small Faces haircuts and accents that were given a title by Melody Maker ? Generally i meant rock. Which of course is a wide genre . Rock and Roll came from RnB which came from Mid USA. To be honest im talking bollocks, its Sunday. I havent had a drink yet. Dont know too much about Goth really. Though i do love The Cure. And the Sisters Of Mercy. Goth girls are pretty it has to be said too. Apart from Mary Sweeney from my 6th form College who i got off with every Friday night pissed out my face on lager n lime in the Golden Lion in Solihull looking for a cheap pull at 11.30pm. Mod
We could be just going around in circles on 'who' originated what, as different genre's progress from one. Brit pop being a form of rock? Trip hop being a form of hip-hop and other sounds? Alot of music can't really even really be pidgeonholed. I hear you about goth girls too.. Jane
Surely Punk was of British origin.
bjd
I always thought the first Punk music started with the New York Dolls and The Ramones in the early 70s and given a UK modification in the mid 70s, though having said that garage music like the MC5 and The Stooges was even earlier than that. But im no expert so maybe your right Jane. edit - sadly Mod the pic doesnt work!
Mod
sh*te! that will teach me for nicking bandwidth off someone. Used the same technique to someone nicking 'The Shed End's' - Karma I guess.
Enrico
And the Sisters Of Mercy. Never thought I'd know another person who liked them. I feel like the only one where I'm from who's ever heard of them... though I've been told before by Sofaboy they were pretty big in Portugal. Nibs
SLTS at Number One?Nirvana are overrated if you ask me. Here here. Someone will have to start a thread on the most over rated bands of all time. For me it would be between said Nirvana and U2.
