I was reading that at lunchtime today. QPR did give us a few beatings back then - oh how things have changed.

Doug was well hard. Hard, but not that good!! Loved him for his commitment and passion, but he could be a bit of a disaster. The penalty in the classic 4-4 with Shef wed. When he nearly single handedly let Man City back in the Full Members Cup Final. And the sending off against Wimbledon when he completely lost the plot!!!

Good Old Doug

I was at that 6 nil game. It was awful. Still, there were more Chelsea fans than QPHa fans inside Loftus that day (like there always was really). I'll never forget Speedo being sent off for for throwing a right hander at someone! We were in with a shout of the title that year. And then we had the mother of all Easters. 10 goals conceded in two games (a few days before West Ham had spanked us 4-0 at SB in a game they couldve had 20. McAvennie ruined us)

Doug was a Chelsea legend. But for all the wrong reasons! His Chelsea debut was also the first time i saw Chelsea play live. First game of the season 1984, away to Highbury. Have a look at the Justs avatar, i was slap bang behind the goal. Aged 9!

As has been mentioned the Full Members Cup was his peak. Or depending how you look at it the trough!

That article also mentions the Sunderland Q/F games of 1992. Some very painful memories. We really thought it was going to be our year that year. These were the days when a Cup Q/F was big , BIG news!

Doug was soooo poor.

At a time when there was no money, he was STILL over paid!

But he wore the shirt so is a hero....

The high must have been his debut at Highbury. I was at that game and remember thinking we'd discovered another gem in Doug. He looked solid and assured (or maybe it was the efects of drinking too much alcohol in the morning before a lunchtime start, but that was my impression at the time...)

However, he quickly turned out to be a liability culminating in the low of the 4-4 cup game against Sheff Wed, which gave birth to the song:

I remember some journo writing about about Dougie saying "if he were any more limited he could be quoted on the Stock Exchange".

Cruel, funny and very true - but it cannot be denied that he played with real heart.

...and two left feet unfortunately!
