To coin Kevin Keegan (I know, I know, why would I), I'd love it, just love it if we signed Joe Hart from Man City to provide cover for Cech. I find it difficult to believe he'd want to swap second place behind Given for second place behind Cech though. Hilario can remain as third choice. In defense, I find it difficult to comprehend why we would consider off-loading Carvalho. He is different class when he plays, and I am banking on this season just being a bit of a fluke, injury-wise, for him. Alex has also shown good form when he's filled in, so I think we are fine in the CB area. I personally like the look of Ivanovic, and wish he would be tried at RB more often in matches where we need more defensive stability. Bosingwa is terrific at providing attacking support, but he really is not a good defender. On the left, Ash has been great, and along with Cech, JT, and Carvalho makes 4/5ths of a very solid defense. Paulo at left back is okay and nothing more. If we really went for Zhirkov, he could fill in there and we could let Paulo go. I think he is one who needs regular playing time to get to a good level, and I don't see him getting that at Chelsea now. Mancienne will continue to be developed and get some games. We have one of the slowest midfielders in the league, as far as I can tell. Mikel, Lamps and Ballack are physical hulks, but they have the speed and turning arc of ocean liners. They need time to get the ball under control and seek out a target. As a matter of fact, they simply cannot create things without "runners" up front. They don't have dribbling skills. So, I think they need to be complemented by a bit of speed and flair/dribbling ability. Deco, despite early promise, doesn't look like providing this, although he has shown flashes of dribbling ability. Essien is more about power than finesse. I would definitely keep Mikel, Lamps and Essien, but I am not as decided about Deco and Ballack. Ballack has been the biggest disappointment for me (and with Malouda in our ranks that is saying something). I still like the aura of the man, but I'd ship him back to the Alliance Arena for someone else with more dribbling skill (more on that later). I like the rumors linking us to van der Vaart. I think he could do a job for us in midfield. I do agree that probably the biggest amount of change is needed up front. Drogba looks like he is enjoying his football again, and when he does, he is simply irreplaceable, although I find it hard to commend him for this when he should be putting in the work regardless of who manages him - he is afterall supposed to be a professional. Anelka has been hit and miss, but a goal scorer is priceless and we should keep him for this potential. Kalou and Joe Cole both have some dribbling ability, and while they may take more chances then we would like before they score a goal, I would still like us to keep them both for the time being. The one BIG signing I really want us to make is a replacement for Malouda, pronto. And I feel that one of the best alternatives, keeping in mind he is at a club whose status is arguably about the same as ours in the current footballing world, and who might thus consider a switch (as opposed to the likes of Messi, etc...), is Ribery. I think he would be a hit in the premiership. I'm also a fan of Aghbonlahor more than I am of Ashley Young, though they are of course options. Cheers, Butch

I doubt we'd make much money for the players we NEED to let go, although there is the issue of their huge salaries to get off the pay-roll. The bottom line, as many have said, is that I hope whoever the manager is in the off-season is allowed to pick and choose his own players, and that he is given the support by Roman. But if I had any say in this, which of course I don't, this would be what I would do: These are the players who, for various reasons, I feel don't offer us anything special and should be moved on to make way for additions - 1. Malouda - for obvious reasons 2. Ballack - for me, he has done nothing of note to merit his place in the side. Works hard, covers a lot of ground, but as someone has said somewhere, "so does my dog and he doesn't deserve to play for Chelsea". Bit harsh but totally overshadowed by Lampard and would probably get back to some semblance of his former self at another club where he was the dominant midfielder. 3. Mineiro - for obvious reasons. 4. Deco - this one is not so obvious, BUT depending on how the manager wants the team to play, I am not certain Deco would fit in and he is not one we can build on for the future. We already have many other midfielders that are hitting their limelights and we need some freshness in this area for the EPL. Having said that, he may be of some use in certain situations so not a total loss. 5. Drogba - his situation needs to be sorted. Does he want to stay and fight for his place and for the good of the team, or is he just doing this in the short term to attract suitors? If it's the former, we keep him. If that is in any question, he should go. The rest, I would keep and build upon. As for comings in, I believe we need a good number two goalie, one or two good wingers, one or two midfielders to replace Ballack and Deco, and, if needed, a striker to replace Drogba. I haven't a clue who I want as back up keeper to Cech. For the winger(s), the first one on my list is Ribery as I believe other better options are not available. For this option, maybe a part swap deal taking Ballack back to Bayern could be arranged. This would actually be my priority signing. For the midfielders, I am as yet uncertain. If Deco stays, we may not need anyone. For a forward, I still like the look of Villa the most, even though he'd be more likely to go to Liverpool (maybe) or Bacelona. Huntelaar, as always, is also an attractive option. Cheers, Butch

You can call your team whatever you want but please include your "forum name" so I know who it is. An exact score prediction will garner you 3 points (a win), the right result but wrong scoreline will garner you 1 point (a draw) and of course a wrong prediction will garner you no points (a loss). On the face of it, the timing seems a bit ludicrous, and there is reason to think that the upper management have absolutely no conviction in their choices. However, from the standpoint of "success", immediate, there was no option. Taking the players out of the equation for a minute, Scolari's performance has been underwhelming, keeping in mind what he was brought in to do (and the maximum time he had to do it in - 3 years?). Anyway, I prefer to look at the future now. I have to say I am concerned at the choices available at the moment. Ericksson? Hiddink? I'm sorry, but while they probably would have been better choices than Scolari in terms of their club experience, they are not long-term appointments by any stretch of the imagination. As a stop gap until the end of the season, I wouldn't be too against that but for the long-term I want someone in who has the potential to build us up and stay with us for the long haul. Mancini and Rijkaard are plausible solutions, though both will need settling in time to the EPL style, etc... But I certainly would not be against either of them. Of the two, I personally prefer Rijkaard (although I admit I was not happy with him during our feuds with Barcelona during Jose's reign). What about closer to home? I've been very impressed by Martin O'Neil. I don't know if he'd be interested in walking out on Villa at this point in time - they are going well and he may feel he has unfinished business there, but he is of about the right age and has the characteristics to help us do well. David Moyes is similar in that regard. But I can't finish my post without mentioning my numero uno target because I never wanted him to leave. As stupid as it may be to have any expectations of this happening, the re-signing of Jose is the only one that would put me over the moon. I am still distraught at his departure to be honest. But: 1. Why would he want to rejoin us - unfinished business, strong bond with current players? 2. Why would Inter allow him to leave mid-season and how could they get a suitable replacement? 3. Would Roman and Kenyon swallow their prides to rehire him? And so I tell you truthfully it doesn't look probable or even possible, although my heart skips a beat everytime I read things like all bets on Jose becoming Chelsea manager have been suspended. So, back to the realm of reality, it would be a tough decision between Rijkaard and O'Neil for me. Oh, and while I do like what Zola and Clarke have done, I believe they need more time to garner experience. I don't want them to come too soon and be shot down when they don't make the grade. But that looks like a marriage just waiting to happen. Let's just allow it to happen when we are both ready. Cheers, Butch
