PL, Chelsea vs Hull, 07/02/09, 1500 GMT
My point wasn't that it should have been given as much as that it WOULD have been given at Anfield or OT. Cheers, Butch

PL, Chelsea vs Hull, 07/02/09, 1500 GMT
And we need to keep Drogba away from those free kicks. He must have like a 1% success rate and by him taking them our better takers lose out. Lamps should have taken it without question and if anybody else should have it was Deco. But how many times does Lamps get goals from free kicks for us? I simply do not understand the logic of wasting good chances like that. Aghast, Butch

PL, Chelsea vs Hull, 07/02/09, 1500 GMT
I really want to support Scolari, but I can think of several "weird" decisions that together helped us not to win this match: 1. Taking Quaresma, one of our most threatening outlets, off too soon without a good enough option. 2. Bringing on Deco too late, and not giving him a chance to interplay with Quaresma. 3. Wasting a sub when he brought Belletti on for Mikel with zero impact. 4. Going back to the "lump it to Drogba" plan that hasn't worked even once since he's been manager. In the second half, we played worse than in the first. I put that down to the manager. Under Jose, almost always the opposite. That is what a good manager does for you (and no, I am not calling for Jose to come back; just using an example). Having said this, that hand ball by the Hull defender would have been punished at Anfield or Old Trafford. Doesn't bear thinking about but frustrating nonetheless. Cheers, Butch

Let's Hear It For Mikel
The only thing I wanted to add in Mikel's defense is that he is not the only midfielder struggling to complete a forward pass. I don't believe it is down to the midfielders per se. I believe it is down to (a) our slow build-up making it difficult for forwards to find space, and (B) our forwards not making the runs often enough. As such, when ANY of our midfielders have the ball, they struggle to see anyone to pass to, except for a fellow midfielder 5 yards to the left or right, who the opposition elect to leave open as opposed to any of our forwards. Cheers, Butch

Lampards Red Card Rescinded
Look, I am as frustrated as anyone else about our lack of cutting edge and coordinated attacking play, BUT to all those that say we deserved nothing from the game I "%^" in your general direction. We should have got a point from the match and remained second in the league anyway. Instead, we've lost even more confidence and fallen further behind. No, I don't believe we deserved nothing from the game. The rescinded red card is the very least we deserved. And to be honest, it ain't enough. Cheers, Butch

Quaresma ?
I'm reasonably excited by this signing, even if my excitement is tempered by what I know is a "bad attitude". I'm thinking about the whole package though. Here is a player that is looking to take defenders on and embarrass them, and who has the tricks and speed to do it. Defenders will most definitely "feel challenged" and know they have to keep an eye out for them. In short, he is a weapon and could help us stretch defenses, both physically and psychologically. This is a good thing for it will create space for our other players and lapses in concentration that give us some chances. On the other hand, he will need to know how to take care of himself on the pitch for there will be some cowardly defenders who feel they must get a cheap, hard tackle in before they get embarrassed. I think this is where Scolari comes in. I don't know how to do it, and am unsure how he would take it, but watching some videos of Christiano Ronaldo would be a good start. I'm not expecting the world from Quaresma, but I do feel he brings some qualities which we are in dire need of. If he can drift "into" matches at least as often as he does "out" of them, I think he will have done a job for us. Because I do believe his skills are potentially "game changing". But again, it would be good to keep things in perspective. He is a player that needs "emotional" support. If fans turn on him when he has a tough game, I believe it would basically make things worse. Cheers, Butch

How do we move forward?
Scolari's is not an enviable task. I fully accept his job is a difficult one. But while the addition of 4 players would make his job easier, I am still unconvinced by his ability to stand "toe-to-toe" with the other top managers. That really is where Jose, for example, excelled. That is the kind of edge you need to be successful (more often than not). As I said though, I am unconvinced, meaning I am not sure about him, yet I am not sure we'd do better with another manager either, for it depends who we brought in. I know who I want, but I doubt it'd happen ever again. As such, we're left in this strange situation where we haven't a clue either way. Brings me back to the feeling that Roman needs to back Felipe and let's just find out one way or the other. Anything is better than this "mess". Regarding Mikel, I am not too disappointed in him. He has been a bright spot in our season, IMHO. Cheers, Butch

Let's look to the future ....
We can't beat (or even hardly score against the likes of Man Utd, Arsenal or Liverpool) and we have a chance in the Champions League? Cheers, Butch

How do we move forward?
So, how do we move forward? Is this just a matter of "settling in" time that Felipe needs? Is this just a matter of getting in a player (or three) that will allow Chelsea to play in Felipe's philosophy? Or is this more deep-seated? To be honest, I am not so sure. It's not like Felipe has not brought any change to Chelsea. I mean, early season we were pretty much flying. I think if we're happy to be a 4-5th-placed side fighting for a Champions League place every season, we're probably okay. And Felipe can have his 2-3 seasons of growing into his job, slowly changing the personnel and maybe we can mount a serious challenge for the EPL at that time. But if we really want to keep some momentum of the previous 4 seasons (whatever little is left) going forward, I'm afraid we may be in for some big, difficult decisions. For Felipe has seriously disappointed me. This is not the face of Chelsea that I want - this amiable, soft "we are everyone's friends" persona. I don't know what sort of PR game we're playing, but I rather the Jose game face. I also rather his no-nonsense attitude to the current seemingly lackadaisical one. Somehow, I feel he either doesn't have a grasp of "competitive" football, or he is unable to transmit this to his team (or, gulp, both). I mean, we not play uncoordinated football; we also lack passion. Currently, we have a few players, e.g. Lamps, JT, and Ash in the main, "carrying" the others. I mean, surely, the manager must be partly to blame. We've already heard the undertones of player discontent with the new style of training. I wouldn't pay any heed in normal circumstances, but Jose had instilled the "winning feeling" in everything that was done at the club and I can't help but feeling we're letting up now ever since he left. Let's for a minute say we keep Felipe at the helm. Certainly, there are negatives to manager musical chairs as well. Would significant changes in playing staff help things? And by significant, how many changes are needed? Will Roman actually fund these needed changes? I can't even begin to discuss which players might come in and help us as I can't really see what Felipe is after, to be honest. I don't see a style of play, like I did with Jose, or even Grant. It is so uncoordinated. What we could do with for sure is some speed and cutting edge, on both flanks. So, that's two players already. We need to replace Drogba. That's three. I personally feel we need a different midfielder to Ballack, to come in and do a job when Lamps or Essien are out - so that's a fourth. I think we have good enough defenders so I'm thinking we need a minimum of 4 additions/changes. That is not a small number. Would Roman fund that? I can't really see things changing too much with Felipe at the helm and any less than 4 player additions. I just can't. I think departures are just as important as additions and I can't wait to see the back of Malouda and Drogba. I really can't. As I said, if we're happy with our "fall from grace" in our new role as 3-5th placed challengers and hope Felipe pulls something out of the hat at some point, then we can keep doing what we're doing and wait for those 1-2 expected player changes in the summer. Maybe we SHOULD be happy with that considering where we were not that long ago. But if we expect to really challenge at the top edge of all the tournaments we enter, I fear it may require something else. Cheers, Butch

PL, Bin Dippers vs Chelsea, 01/02/09, 1600 GMT
Let me just preface this by saying that our coaching set up is out of its depth - we're no closer to doing anything against any of the so called "top" sides in the EPL than we have been at any time this season. Even with Lamps on the pitch, we were ineffective and clueless. I have grave doubts about Scolari's abilities, even if I understand the team he now manages is not "his own". Having said that, this match was lost because of one man only - the bloody tosser who parades around as an EPL referee. What a bloody disgrace. He's either bent as hell or out of his depth. No consistency whatsoever throughout the match culminating in a frankly ludicrous sending off. Gerrard shouldn't have been on the bloody pitch after blasting that ball into Bosingwa in the opening minutes, and I'd say Rory Delap has some grounds for lodging a complaint. Then more open stud challenges by Gerrard and stupid reckless challenges by Mascherano go completely unpunished. A handball by a Liverpool defender was not given (rightly so), yet one is awarded against Mikel (a free kick) for essentially the same thing. Yes, we didn't look like winning anyway, BUT we didn't look like conceding until the sending off, with Alex and Ash doing very well in defense (until a mistake each led to the two goals). But by that time we were absorbing so much pressure it was only a matter of time. I'm just sick and tired of Man Utd and Liverpool getting the benefit of the doubt while we get harshly punished for borderline cases (and I use the term borderline VERY loosely - Lamps got the ball AND very little of Alonso; as a matter of fact, Alonso got more of Lamps than the other way round). But then again, why am I not surprised? Cheers, Butch

Trimming The Squad
Looks like we're losing Ivanovic, so I'd keep Alex and Mancienne as back-up to JT and Riccy. I'm not so sure I'd let both Paulo and Belletti go either; we need to keep one of them for back-up, possibly both if Scolari sees Paulo as back-up to Ash. Selling Deco now seems a bit of a waste. He's already here, has shown flashes of brilliance, and needs some time to settle down. BUT, we do need to make sure he has decent competition for his place. I'm not sure I'd change anything here either. It is up front where the changes need to be made. I agree with Gullit04 that the big one will likely be replacing Didier as we couldn't possibly do that with a youngster without hurting our prospects. The other big one will be replacing Florent. I'd keep Kalou myself despite his frustrating performances. He is one of the few who looks to take defenders on with the ball at his feet, and he is still young-ish and learning. I don't think we'll be signing boat loads this summer so we don't want the squad to get stripped too bare! I don't think squad is all that old. They are in their prime though and so must win now if they're to do it at all. The future prospects are not that great. I'm not for changing just to bring the average age down. I'm also a bit bewildered at our seeming lack of concern in letting players leave without bringing in able replacements, in the middle of the season no less (a very competitive season that is seeing us struggle a bit). Yes, I am disappointed with the Carlo deal. Allowing him to leave on a free now doesn't help us (apart from taking him off our payroll) and in fact hurts us. Cheers, Butch

Correct Score Poll/bet Vs Ipswich
Was going to go for 2-1, but then decided that we'll be determined to keep a clean sheet and should be up to the task against Ipswich. Then, toned down the prediction by the fact we've been awful with our shooting. So, 1-0 it is! Cheers, Butch

It was Lampard's Goal - Get over it!
Thankfully, Scolari has already said in an interview on the Official Site that the goal has been awarded to Frank as a gift for his 400 matches for Chelsea and his captain's performance in the stirring comeback. Although the reasoning is a bit strange, all that matters is that it was Lamps' goal. Cheers, Butch
