abramovich
This is the player I'd pay any money to get in blue kit. I know he's not ours (unfortunately), but what a player. Have been watching Barca this season and he's been playing even better, if that's possible, than before. Every match you watch the opposition game plan seems to be to just kick him out of the game, and that includes not just minnows but the top dogs like Real and Valencia. How good is this kid? 19 goals and 9 assists in 20 matches so far this season. I think he has potential to become the best player ever. This is his last match, hat trick vs Atletico, (click on "watch in high quality" in the bottom right corner) Check out at around 03:06 when he is pushed out of bounds he manages to knock the ball back and get a corner out of it, i was watching that and couldn't believe my eyes. Another standing ovation from the opposition fans, isn't that something. Edited January 7, 2009 by abramovich
Nibs
Just unbelievable. He has everything and now even a decent haircut!! Would happily offload ANY of our players to make way for Messi - the guy is a genius.
coombsie
Truly World Class. The punishment that he takes is bordering on ABH !!!! How the f**k is Ronaldo going to cope with that type of attention when he makes his eventual move to Real Madrid?? He''l be flat on his back for most of the game

But I am sorry to say he is nowhere near on the same level. I have seen Joe go on dribbles, beat a number of players and come away with the ball, but he doesn’t do it with anything like the frequency or pace Messi does, in fact that part of Joe’s game seems to be getting less & less. We haven’t got anything coming close to the sort of level Messi is playing at. Jeez, he can even take a decent corner!!!

Messi is easily the world's best player at the moment. Even at his very best Joe Cole was nowhere near his level. Guest Sindre
 No... But do forgive me for having faith and belief in the ability of some of the players we already have Lets be serious. Joey Cole is not and will never by anything near Lionel Messi. He is another level than most of the other players in the world today. Kaka and C.Ronaldo is the only two that can get somewhere near the same level on a good day. In fact im really dissepoited with Coles performances in the last two seasons. Most of the time he has been rubbish, with some good moments.

I understand where you're coming from, but i never said i wouldn't have Messi in a Chelsea or that either he, or Joe Cole was the better player. I'm just saying that under present circumstances i'm hoping what we have got already returns to form rather than championing players from other teams If people read what i put in my initial post it's not really that difficult to understand Edited January 7, 2009 by byatt

That's your actual quote. You may mean something else but it appears to me that: 1. You prefer on form Joe Cole to Messi 2. On his day Joe can do anything Messi can. So here's my comment: 1. I prefer Messi to any player in the world. 2.Joe Cole even on his best day is not capable of doing things Messi does on regular basis. Messi is a level or two above as a footballer. evissy
I watched Atletico-Barca yesterday. Barca won 3-1 with Messi scoring a hat-trick. It is very enjoyable to watch the best player of the world perform. He is simply never giving up and never losing his balance he is simply amazing. Even when Barca was coasting to easy victory Messi fought over every single ball. His attitude and focus in the game is uncomparable. We don't need Messi to win us championships, we need that attitude and focus.

On his day Joe can do anything Messi can. And yes, i do believe Joe Cole has bags of ability and even at the age of 27 lots of unfulfilled potential, i think Joe has shown in the past that on form, he's capable of beating 3 or 4 defenders with a dazzling run, quick feet or a piece of skill. Wether its at the same level of consistency to that of Messi or not i'm not arguing against, but as i said.. on his day Joe Cole has the ability do anything Messi can do, and i stand by that, regardless of whatever anyone else says

Yes Joe can do some great things with the ball and i think on his day he is one of our best players. I think we can all agree that we haven't seem that for some time tho. In MY opinion Messi is a class apart from Cole (but of course i still love Joe playing for Chelsea) and any other footballer even when Ronaldo is at his best. Messi was held back by a poor Barca team last year but now under Guardiola the team looks great and i have no doubt that Messi will be the next World Player of the Year. Anything Joe Cole can do (and he does have alot of tricks) are not even close to Messi, but then who in the prem or in the world (bar Ronaldo and Kaka) is. Tim
I sort of get the feeling that Joe's footballing gravestone will read 'unfulfilled potential,' which I don't think is right. Great player on his day, no doubt, but I don't think he is quite as good a player as all of England hoped he would be. World class he ain't, and he never will be IMO. Maybe he has just fulfilled his potential? He is a good player at one of Europe's top clubs and a regular for his national team, which isn't exactly too shabby! Just because he isn't as good as a Messi/Kaka/Ronaldo/Pele/Maradona etc doesn't mean he's not a fantastic player, but I think this idea that he still has loads of potential that has yet to be unlocked is a bit far fetched. The very, very best players shine no matter what, and don't need excuses made for them. On form, he is a dead cert for my CFC (and England) starting 11, but at the moment, he isn't exactly on fire. We need a great game from him on Sunday that's for sure... Edited January 7, 2009 by Tim
TheWestwayWonder
I will say this on behalf of byatt. There were several instances over the past few years where I saw Joe Cole make a move, dummy a player, beat a defender, etc, and he looked totally undefendable. It is these moments, where Joe looked the definition of world class, that Messi is able to string together every game, with far more consistency, and occasionally, far and away top that lead me to believe Joe could, at one time, have become our Messi. While Joe frustrates at least as much as he satisfies, Messi is 100% brilliant almost every match. And obviously, the moments in which he goes supernova are all over youtube. Sadly I think its clear Joe is never even going to be in the same conversation as Leo Messi. Too many injuries, too much inconsistency, and while 27 isnt old, its not young in footballing terms. I think Messi will stay at Barca for another decade at least. Unless a fee smashes the world record. And when/if he does move from Barca, it will be entirely on his own terms. I think Barca have learned their lesson after letting Ronaldo and Maradonna go before their best had been seen.

I agree Joe has great skills, and i think we can all remember the days of West Ham when he was pulling them out everytime he touched the ball. then he came to Chelsea and learnt under Jose to use them much more effectively and the game against United springs to mind (taking on 3 and scoring). Joe Cole was and lets be honest, still is our Messi, who else in the squad has any skills to dribble past lots of players (and please dnt say kalou). There is no point comparing to Messi as he has never been and will never be that good but a fully fit and on form J Cole is good enough for me and tbh, something we need right now!
