Been officially stated on SSN as well. You're quick on the draw Abe. Good young signing, plenty of promise, and I am sure this is an Arnesen nod. Glad to see we are bolstering the offence, but I wonder what this will mean for Di Santo

I'm quite happy with this signing. I saw him at the Bridge last season in the first leg of the Youth Cup final and he stood out as a player with definite potential. From what I've read he seems to have a bit of an attitude but I'm sure Ancelotti thinks he can handle this and harness his undoubted promise.

Zhirkov next?

STURRIDGE SIGNS

Posted on: Fri 03 Jul 2009

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm that Daniel Sturridge has agreed to join the club on a four-year contract.

He will join the first team squad for pre-season training next week when the players return from their summer break.

The 19-year-old previously played for Manchester City, where he first burst onto the first team scene in the 2007/08 season, scoring twice in four days in January for Sven Goran Eriksson's side, including an important equaliser at Derby County to earn a point.

Within months he was well known among Chelsea supporters, scoring City's goal in the first leg of the FA Youth Cup Final, a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Absent through injury from the second leg, Daniel saw his team-mates eventually defeat us 3-1 on the night to take the trophy.

A nephew of former Derby forward Dean Sturridge, Daniel arrived at City's Academy in 2003 from Coventry, having previously trained with Aston Villa.

He graduated to the senior squad at the beginning of the 2006/07 season and after injuries hampered his speedy progress, a hat-trick in the reserves prompted a debut in February 2007 as a late substitute.

Last season he was a more regular fixture in and around Mark Hughes's squad, netting four times in 26 appearances, 10 of which were starts, and was voted City's Young Player of the Year.

Daniel has also represented England up to Under 20 level, where he has played alongside our own Ryan Bertrand, Jack Cork and Scott Sinclair.

Great news. Could be a long-term prospect to eventually replace Drogba. Good luck lad!

superb signing, and if hes coming on a high wage i expect he will be straight into the first team squad. been talking to a couple of city mates and they are gutted hes gone, they both reckon hes good enough now to make the england squad, and will be englands first choice striker very soon if he gets games with us. apparently he has got an attitude problem, but one heard the reason he left wasnt just money, he asked hughes where he would be in the pecking order next season and was told he would be going to a championship side on loan. so he told them to get stuffed and came to us. i presume weve offered him a guarantee of first team football, or at least subs bench and cup games.

It's easy to look good in highlight reels and on youtube, but I like what I've seen, even if it's been just little glimpses. I don't like the talk about the attitude problems, but hopefully Charlie and JT can knock some sense into his head.

Yep, him and di Santo should definitely get games when Drogba and Kalou are away for ACN (presuming he plays 2 strikers upfront).

Without doubt he is a gamble, if we payout around £5m its a good gamble, weve had plenty of more expensive gambles in the past 5 years.

I think the attitude thing comes with all great strikers, look at 2 of our greatest strikers in recent years, Drogba and JFH know all about attitude, not too much of a problem if he keeps hitting the net.

Good pace, little glimpses of trickery, and although he seems predominantly left footed, he looks comfortable on both sides.

i seem to remember him playing wide for city and also behind a striker so it looks like hes able to play in most positions up front which is useful too,

its better than the first attempt. ive heard it was originally going to say "destroyers of football steal helpless young footballer from lovely little man city"

Good one mate! That's going to the memorable quotes. ;)
