March 17, 201214 yr I wouldn't recommend it. It felt rambly, self-indulgent and, ultimately, contrived. The protagonist's conversion from drunk to crusader was extremely unconvincing. The portrayal of his supposed ethical "journey" was slapdash. Johnny Depp sort of sleepwalked through this one, so low-key he wasn't really there. And the final insult is the deus ex machina epilogue, which served to confirm how weak and pointless the preceding 120 minutes were. Maybe it's a mood thing that someone will enjoy. and I read somewhere that a major character from the book was missing in the film ... weird! Think I'll give it a miss. It's the Springtime of the Cinema here for the next three days. All seats half price. A friend and I are going to see two films tomorrow. One at 17.30, then into a caf§ for a bite to eat, and another film at 20.20.
March 17, 201214 yr What a great concept! I wish I had access to that. How much is a normal ticket? I pay 9 Euro in a theater, which I think is robbery.
March 17, 201214 yr What a great concept! I wish I had access to that. How much is a normal ticket? I pay 9 Euro in a theater, which I think is robbery. Yes, it's about 8 euros here. You can buy a card which reduces the price of each film to about 5, but it has a time limit on it so you have to go at least once a week to use your tickets before they expire. Why did I think you were Australian? Clearly you're not if you're paying in euros...so where are you from?
March 17, 201214 yr I don't pay in Euros, I just did the conversion for ease of use. If filmmakers want to know why audiences are declining and piracy is rampant, they should take a look at their ticket prices. For a 3D movie they charge more than 11 Euro, which is robbery and assault combined.
March 17, 201214 yr You are so thoughtful! Yes indeed, here too they add 2 euros for the use of their funny specs!
March 19, 201214 yr You're lucky. Here a normal ticket cost around €10, sometimes more. A 3D movie costs atleast €14. No wonder some download movies for free. I would only pay for a movie if it was something special.
March 19, 201214 yr Went to book tickets for The Hunger Games on Thursday (beyond excited for that film), and if I weren't a student it would've cost me £8.90. Ridiculous. It's no wonder so many people stream movies online nowadays with prices like that.
March 19, 201214 yr Gérard Depardieu? Sorry Moi for the late reply, but I think the bloke I was thinking of was Michael York,(what happened to him?),...............err, who cares!. But Rachel Welch though!................
March 19, 201214 yr Michael York? he who was in Cabaret? He didn't have a big nose, did he? http://cache2.allpostersimages.com/p/LRG/27/2769/RDXTD00Z/affiches/michael-york.jpg Oh well, maybe it is a bit big! Do you mean RAQUEL Welch? http://images.easyart.com/i/prints/rw/lg/2/3/Celebrity-Image-Raquel-Welch-234655.jpg

And that York fella does have a big conk,if the sun was shining, you could tell what time of day it was!.

March 19, 201214 yr As a kid of a 'certain age',while watching Miss Welch in a re-run of 1million years B.C.,my thought's went from what fantastic (if plasticine) dinosaurs, to what dinosaurs?,then, to who gives a t*ss about dinosaurs!. Honestly, that woman's got a lot to answer for..........................................If only I had the chance to ask her!.
March 19, 201214 yr Wow. That's crazy money. Moi, waiting for your weekend film report. Sorry wxwax. I'll try to be brief: First film was a French one: 38 Witnesses. A murder is committed in the port of le Havre. The murdered girl screams repeatedly in the course of the attack. Yet everyone in the block of flats says they slept through it. One of the inhabitants is a man who pilots tugs to bring the big container ships into the harbour. His fiancé had been away and only returned on the morning after the murder. The man can't live with his conscience and after two days confesses to the police that he had heard the girl screaming. Little by little all the other 37 witnesses are made to confess that they too had heard the screams. But none had tried to intervene nor had anyone phoned the police. The Police Inspector goes to the Procurator Fiscal to demand that all 38 witnesses be prosecuted for non-intervention to come to the aid of soneone in danger (Don't know if that's an offence in UK - it is in France). The Procurator Fiscal refuses on the grounds that it will bring the town into disrepute. A middle-aged female reporter eventually breaks the story in the press. It is a very slow-moving film, which may well not appeal to those who like lots of action. There is some beautiful photography of the port of le Havre. The i's are not all dotted and the t's are not all crossed. Hints are made as to the various reasons why people may have been reluctant to contact the police, but no conclusions are drawn, nor is the killer found. You are left with the strong feeling that the pilot's life has been ruined - that he will never recover from the shame of his lack of action on the night. I'm not sorry I saw it, but it is not a film I will be buying on DVD. Second film: Woman in Black with Daniel Radcliffe - total crap! self-indulgent gothic bollocks. A waste of 2 hours of my life! Edited March 19, 201214 yr by moi
March 19, 201214 yr First film was a French one: 38 Witnesses. Great description. I could see the visuals as soon as you mentioned the pilot. I like the idea of the film, the questions it asks of us. The ambiguity doesn't strike me as being an issue. The slow pacing might deter me, it's something I find a bit self-indulgent, as though the makers are too important to entertain me. As for Mr. Radcliffe, it wouldn't surprise me if he's not left alone to count his money in a few short years. A one-hit wonder.
March 20, 201214 yr Just seen the latest version of The Three Musketeers on dvd. sheesh, what a load of crap. Much prefer the late 70's versions with Oliver Reed,Albert Finney,Roy Kinnear,Rachel Welch,(oh yes!) & that bloke with the big hooter. Just another reminder of just what 'quality character' actors bring to a film & what results when they're missing.
March 20, 201214 yr Saw "Serenity" a few days ago. Had just watched the entire Firefly series, so I had to see that movie. Quite liked it.
March 21, 201214 yr Saw "Serenity" a few days ago. Had just watched the entire Firefly series, so I had to see that movie. Quite liked it. Me too. Love the characters.
March 21, 201214 yr Saw "Serenity" a few days ago. Had just watched the entire Firefly series, so I had to see that movie. Quite liked it. It gets better as it goes on that film, it's a nice sense of closure. But still I have no idea what's so curious about Shephard Book!
March 21, 201214 yr It gets better as it goes on that film, it's a nice sense of closure. But still I have no idea what's so curious about Shephard Book! I know. I was a bit disappointed. I wanted to know more about him. But I guess he's supposed to be a bit mysterious. Maybe he would have been a bit boring if we found out all about him in the end. Only thing that could have made Serenity better was if Neil Patrick Harris had played "Mr. Universe"
March 25, 201214 yr Hmmm... Le fond de l'air est rouge(Grin Without a Cat) is on the telly tonight. Anyone seen it? Is it worth watching? Well, I might as well watch it and find out.

You made me read up on it. Not sure I could sit through three hours of inconclusive political rambling. You're a better man than I.
March 25, 201214 yr You made me read up on it. Not sure I could sit through three hours of inconclusive political rambling. You're a better man than I. Judging by what I've seen from this director, I've got a feeling it's not "inconclusive political rambling".
March 25, 201214 yr Judging by what I've seen from this director, I've got a feeling it's not "inconclusive political rambling". I was basing that on the reviews I read.

Mak - it's a very important historical film on the machinations of the Left in the late sixties. As prescient today as when it was made but probably not for those who don't value or are too lazy to contemplate political ideas or ideals . Will be interested to see what you think.
