Movies and Food

Featured Replies

I'm trying to put together a little movie related quiz for a certain occasion. There are several themes in the quiz and at the moment I'm trying to come up with food related questions. Please help me find some well known movies(they can't be too obscure) with memorable food related scenes in them. I'm struggling a bit at the moment. I've got some questions already, but I need a few more food related ones.

What fictional restaurants can you come up with that have been seen in movies? There are the obvious Jack Rabbit Slim's and Big Kahuna Burger in Pulp Fiction and Pizza Planet in the Pixar movies, but what else?

Any imaginary food items? Like Soylent Green in...well, Soylent Green...(?)

Any famous uses of product placement? Like Pizza Hut in Wayne's World and Back to the Future Part II.

Any famous meals? Like when there's eye soup and frozen monkey brain(and other weird foods) on offer in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom or the fat man in the restaurant bit from Monty Python's Meaning of Life...? Or when Hannibal Lecter tells about eating liver with some fava beans and Chianti.

Also...I'm wondering if there are any other movies where a hamburger restaurant is being robbed(or there's at least an attempt), other than Coming to America(Samuel L. Jackson trying to rob the McDowell's) and Falling Down(Michael Douglas causing havoc at the Whammy Burger)? Surely there must be at least one other movie...?

All help is appreciated, but feel free to talk about all things related to food and movies. I might get an idea from the most random things.

Restaurant/Diner scene in Five Easy Pieces comes to memory.

....

Jack: "Then I want you to hold the chicken."

Waitress: "You want me to hold the chicken?"

Jack: "I want you to hold it between your knees."

There's the old Tom Jones film from 1963 with a young Albert Finney and Susannah York , where Tom and an older woman, Mrs Waters, are devouring food and it become increasingly obvious that they're about to devour each other.

There's When Harry Met sally - she simulates orgasm in the middle of the restaurant and an older woman says "I'll have what she had!"

There's Babette's Feast

I'll think a bit more.....

How could I forget the scene from When Harry Met Sally? The one from Five Easy Pieces is a classic as well. Thanks! Keep 'em coming!

Some memorable food scenes/discussions in Withnail.

eg. the root crops & vegetables Monty speech "nothing quite like a firm young carrot. Flowers are essentially prostitutes for the bees."; the potatoes peeling & Monty with that classic line "I'm preparing myself to forgive you"

The Crocodile Dundee film where the aborigine bit off a mouthful of iguana, then screwed up his face, saying "Needs garlic!"

The Soul Food Restaurant in The Blues Brothers. Jake has chicken and more chicken, Elwood has white dry toast, Aretha sings "Think" and Matt "Guitar" Murphy risks his relationship to come back to the band.

Also in The Blues Brothers - Bob's Country Shack. "What kind of music do you have here?" "We have both kinds, Country AND Western"

Lovely food going on and then Beer bottles flying that only stop when the Blues Brothers Band play "Rawhide" and "Stand By Your Man"

Oh and the fridge scene in Nine and a Half Weeks - Kimmy doing what Kimmy does and Rourke being sleazy with food

Damn, I expected some in-depth analysis on what food to munch while watching a film.

I don't suppose you know the Dutch film "Abel"; heaps and heaps of raw herring are devoured by a bloke who has invited his date to an Easter breakfast at his parents. The woman loathes herring however (silly girl), and that's the end of their romance, such as it was. Very funny

I think we've just crossed over into the "too obscure" category with that one.

Trainspotting - when Spud have shat himself and brings the dirty linnen out to his girlfriend and her family who's having breakfast.. Classic scene, makes me laugh every time.

Full Metal Jacket - When Private Pyle has "dishonored himself and dishonored his platoon" by taking food back to the barracks.

Cool Hand Luke with the boiled eggs

That's a good one. I'm trying to think of connections between movies and when I saw that scene from Cool Hand Luke being mentioned, I immediately thought of the scene in Rocky where he drinks raw eggs. Any other famous egg scenes?

there's the egg "hatching" scene in Ai no corrida (In the realm of the senses), and a similar scene involving a thai stripper - i think that was in black emanuelle but i wouldn't swear on it.

no eggs, but the mushroom scene in the beguiled (clint eastwood) is a good one. what else? the food fight at the end of blazing saddles, oh and of course the beans scene from the same film ... and how about the scene on the plane at the end of hannibal?

Haven't seen that movie since I was a kind, but that bean scene left me in tears. Makes me smile just thinking about it :D
