So what's with Townsend?

Featured Replies

Looking through some previous articles, Andy Townsend does not seem to come across as the most well-liked of ex-players. In fact, in one particular article "most disliked former Blue", he appears as the consensus choice. Being an Australian, all I have seen of Townsend is the highlights on the old season reviews, but I was just wondering why he is not revered by many at The Shed End. Forgive me if I seem ignorant...

Although I'm from Oz, I have heard all about Townsend's Tactics Truck on 'The Premiership'. The least said about what I've heard about that segment the better...

Ive no idea but from reading a thread a while ago;

when townsend played for chelsea there was a game with another team (obviously, not sure which team however) and a player did a horrendous tackle that ended a chelsea players career. Townsend was going to stand up in court as a witness because this player was suing the bad tackling offender or something like that. Townsend then joined the club that the dirty player was from and then didnt stand as a witness in court so chelsea fans now dislike him heavily.

I think it's something like that anyway. Read it a while back and sorry for how little information there is

Don't be sorry, mate. "...how little information there is"? You've given me heaps, pal. Appreciate it.

I'm guessing the club was Villa then...or did he go there later in his career?

You know what, I think I may have answered my own question...

http://www.cfcnet.co.uk/2007/03/the-paul-elliott-affair/

"Elliott sued Saunders, alleging recklessness. In the aftermath of the incident, his team-mates, Andy Townsend and Vinnie Jones, had been typically full of enraged bluster, vowing to give their pal Jamaica their full support; yet when Saunders – now playing for Aston Villa – scored the first goal of the following campaign at Villa Park, the first person on the scene to give him a kiss and a cuddle in front of the Holte End was his new team-mate: Andy Townsend. Elliott’s heart must have sunk. Later that season, during a minute’s silence before the start of the Chelsea v Aston Villa game at Stamford Bridge, Townsend was loudly called a w***** by a Chelsea supporter. Paul Elliott wasn’t the supporter in question, but it would have been understandable if he had been."

Would have researched it myself but trouble is, I didn't know where to begin looking...and the blokes on this site know their stuff so I thought they'd tell me their reasons.

He was a popular player in his time at Chelsea and one of the best players in that team, although that wasn't too difficult. I remember a couple of great goals from him against Spurs and also a nice one in a live game at Old Trafford.

However he quickly became a villain (and not just as a

Villa player) when he left. Even before the whole Elliott/Saunders court case he called us a Mickey Mouse club when he left. This coming after he had said he was a lifelong Chelsea fan when he signed.

For me he ranks up there among my most disliked ex-players.

Met Paul while out at the World Cup in South Africa. Mentioned Townsend but still wouldn't slag him off. Real gent.

Idol worshiped townsond when I was a kid and he was one of the best center mids around at the time.. I was to young to be overly devastated about him leaving and at the end of the day we weren't really going to be able to offer him a crack at glory, not that villa did but he didn't pull a Durie so I was kind of ok with it all, but as a pundit he seems to stick the knife in at every opportunity . Do I expect a little bias from ex Chelsea, f**k yeah I do . Townsend goes out of his way to criticize the team, fans and club at every opportunity

Townsend was a fine player for us, don't have a problem with him leaving us, don't really care what he says when he's gone

Saunders was a c**t though, he had form for being a dirty sod.

And Vinnie Jones failed to show in court for Elliot, had to be ordered to do so, then changed his story .

As for Elliot he lost the case, most people will tell you it was a tackle from Saunders, that's not the case, Paul flew into Dean, think Dean saw it coming and put his boot thru Paul's knees.

During our run in the Champions League in 2011-12 and the Europa League Final, he came across as being biased towards us. Even shouting "YES!" for the Drog's penalty kick and Iva's header against Benfica. Or is that just a drop in the water compared to times he's criticised us? Being from Australia, I don't have ITV so I don't know what he says during the actual game itself, just how he reacted to the goals when I watched them on YouTube.

By the way, that doesn't mean I only watch the goals on YouTube, I obviously watch the games live on the Australian channels haha

Didn't know about his role in the Saunders/Elliott court case, but most of us hated him because he was our captain then he left us for what he thought was a bigger club.  Frontrunner and scumbag in my book.

I alway remember we play villa in a pre season friendly and it was a 2 minute silent for Matt Busby and it was Townsend first match agains us ,and during the silent someone from the west stand shouted out Townsend your a judias and the whole ground just fell about with laughter . Ken Bate was not happy about it at the time but that what we all thought of him at the time ,because he kept on saying that Chelsea is the only club he wanted to play for because he supported us as a kid.

Then he Slag use off once he left.

I had to listen to him commentating the Swansea game today, not quite sure who it was for as i was streaming the match. I think he goes out of his way to never compliment Chelsea or Chelsea players. I find him quite weird.

Hes just a prick

Blokes a c**t, sh*t commentator who slags us off and constantly and  sits on the fence. Did I mention he's also a c**t.

Not the greatest broadcaster in my view. Never adds much to game and often during england games can,t hide his bias behind england.
