TT Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Oliver Holt is without doubt my favourite Sports Writer: http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/columnists/holt/
sergeyMS Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 "Coppell couldn't be bothered to attend the post-match press conference on Saturday night. He was too busy raving it up with a cup of tea in a room next door. So he sent his man on earth and scorer of the Reading equaliser, Brynjar Gunnarsson, instead. Gunnarsson hails from Iceland and, yes, I know it's unkind but a 2lb pack of Petits Pois from the deep freeze would have spoken with more animation than him. The reporters, better men than me, who persevered magnificently in asking him questions, deserved commendations for endurance in the face of determined and desperate tedium. The Iceman cometh and Iceman sendeth fast asleep."
Gem Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Oliver Holt is without doubt my favourite Sports Writer:http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/columnists/holt/ Agreed, I always enjoy his columns, doesn't follow the mass media opinion like most. The main reason I buy The Mirror.
TT Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 Agreed, I always enjoy his columns, doesn't follow the mass media opinion like most. The main reason I buy The Mirror. Well, I think that buying the Mirror may be going a little too far ! Much easier just to read his article's on-line.
Gem Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 True, but I'd rather fork out for a paper I'd read than the other train-riders who buy the torygraph etc for show Plus it has a good crossword.
Nibs Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Great article, but I could never have a dig at Coppell. I really like the bloke and would love to see him in the England set up at some point. The guy has more dignity than all the other managers in the league put together.
loz Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Great article, but I could never have a dig at Coppell. I really like the bloke and would love to see him in the England set up at some point. The guy has more dignity than all the other managers in the league put together. I would put Pearce above him. On second thought I would put my old dog above him (and he used to try and break into people's houses to see what bithces he could find for a touch of 'How's Your Father?') purely on the grounds of his blatant denial of wrong doing by Hunt.
Nibs Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Loz, I know a lot of people are still very emotive over the whole Hunt thing and fair enough - I'll boo him anytime I attend a game where he is playing, whether he's still at Reading or another club. But you cannot blame Coppell and would you really expect his own coach to come out and castigate him? If the bloke had gone in on Cech with his studs up and it was a clear reckless challenge fair enough. But it wasn't - it took replay after replay to see what had actually happened and even now there are still many that think it was an accident. Coppell still came out with dignity intact as he always does. Would you have expected Mourinho to criticise one of our players if roles were reversed? It just wouldn't happen. As for Pearce? You have to be joking. Not a great track record. Clearly a character with LOTS of passion, but little else.
loz Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 What would you say Pearce has done as a manager that lacked dignity - I would say he has handle most things pretty well, taken the bad decisions and not gone off on one. I hear what you are saying about Coppell and about how Jose (or most other managers) would respond if one of our players did the same thing but then again I don't think Jose (or most other managers) have much dignity either so I wouldn't use this as an excuse for Coppell. However it is probably fair to say that a lot of people still see it as an accident so if there is some doubt then your own manager has to give you the benefit of the doubt.
dkw Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 been very weird lately. some sports writers seem to have had some sort of epiphany. maybe chelsea arent the anti-christ after all. maybe were just misunderstood. whatever it is , long may it continue.

Sorry Loz, when you were saying you would put Pearce above Coppell I thought you meant in respect to a job with England (be it coach or assistant whatever). I just think there was a lot of hype over Pearce as everyone has always loved his approach to the game and his passion etc, but when you look at his track record compared to say Coppell, it doesn't compare - not yet anyway. But I do agree, Pearce has dignity and fair play to him, always holds his hand up when he & his team are in the wrong (although I missed what his stance was on the latest Joey Barton incident). But I just have loads of respect for Coppell, the way he has always done really well with very average sides and he always comes across as such a genuine & decent bloke - very rarely, if ever has a bad word to say about anyone.
andy Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Steve Coppell was scum player ... nuff said .... he has been a crap manager as well, was it man city he managed for 24 hours or something ? ?? Piss off Coppell And while I am in the mood... piss off jetski bloke... I lived in and around Reading most my life and hate the bloke with a passion. My ex wife used to work for him and come home crying most nights cos he was such a c**t... he also swans round teenage night clubs in Reading with a couple of young blondes like a twat... and they tried to kill our keepers..... and to top it all. they got more "new" fans than us !! Carefree :-)
Maksimov Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 Wasn't Holt the one who wrote the false stories about Sheva being a snitch?
Gem Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 I'm not sure, but it doesn't sound like something he'd write. He tends to have this crazy media habit of sticking to the facts.

Well, the links to "Shev's a Snitch" stories don't work anymore, but check this out. Scroll down the page to see a post by The Grimster. There's the story copy/pasted and you can see who was responsible for the original story. And you can also laugh at some bitter comments about Chelsea while you're at it.

I agree, if we were 10pts clear though it would'nt be happening.
Maksimov Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 The knives will be out as soon as we look like we might catch up ManU in the Premiership.
Englishman Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Holt has really p*ssed off the Reading fans. He's apparently even got death threats. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/columnist ... _page.html
dkw Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 thats gotta be the ultimate in irony. a club gets death threat, they complain. a reporter slags em off and gets death threats.
