July 14, 201610 yr All I remember from that game is being really disappointed that Hasselbaink didn't score. I remember Portsmouth beating Man Utd though, that was hilarious. That said, I think that was the season we got knocked out by Barnsley on an absolute swamp of a pitch under Avram.
July 14, 201610 yr I thought this year's Champions League was painfully boring. If that one stands out in your mind 14 years later, it must have been insufferable. I assume you mean West Germany? Did East Germany ever play? I really prefer the South American football style. Brazil hasn't been so entertaining recently, but Chile are the new kings of South American football, and they're feisty and hungry, for lack of better descriptors. They almost seem reckless at time with their attack. Like they don't know what defending is, and they don't care. The major downside of South American football is that the faking is practically a competition in itself. East Germany played in the 1974 world cup finals, can't remember how they did as I spent some of those finals onboard a cruise ship and satellite tv wasn't around then.
July 14, 201610 yr Author As there are a lot of English people here, what was England/Algeria 2010 like for a non-neutral? It's a notorious snoozefest among neutrals. I've heard people say that Switzerland/Ukraine 2006 was even worse. I didn't watch either.
July 14, 201610 yr I have barely any memory of that Algeria game, but you did remind me of this spectacle from 2002: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport3/worldcup2002/hi/matches_wallchart/nigeria_v_england/default.stm
July 14, 201610 yr East Germany played in the 1974 world cup finals, can't remember how they did as I spent some of those finals onboard a cruise ship and satellite tv wasn't around then. I seem to remember they beat West Germany in the group stages, but I could be wrong. Blimey, I was right: Group 1 contained both East Germany and the host West Germany, and they both progressed at the expense of Chile and Australia. But the big clash was between the two German teams. West Germany was already assured of progression to the second round whatever the result. In one of the most politically charged matches of all time, it was the East that won, thanks to a late Jürgen Sparwasser goal. This embarrassing result forced a realignment of the West German team that helped them win the Cup.
July 17, 201610 yr My first thought was the previously mentioned West Germany game from the 1982 World Cup. Mind you I fell asleep during two of the Euro 16 Group games!
July 17, 201610 yr Scotland v England from 1987. 0-0 and bar Chris Woods and Terry Butcher playing for England I don't really remember much of the game.
July 18, 201610 yr Rangers v Hibs Scottish Cup Final and 1st Replay back in May 1979. Watching paint dry was much more exciting. Even to a football mad kid back then. I knew it was completely boring. My dad rated these games as the worst he ever attended.
July 19, 201610 yr Author For the infamous Austria/West Germany game that several have mentioned, was it clear to viewers what was happening, so they knew it would be that way for the rest of the game and thus could stop watching, or did viewers not know what was going on?
July 20, 20169 yr England vs Germany, Euro 2000. I was delighted we won, but jeez what a piss-poor game it was.
