One of the first foreign club sides I ever took an interest in.   St Etienne of the mid 1970s .
They knocked Glasgow Rangers out of the 1975/76 European Cup in Nov 75. Then were invited to train by Rangers at Ibrox, when they reached the Final the following May. The football trivia I remember!😀

Graeme Souness, his long-standing rival as a player and later Wilkins’ manager at Rangers, where they won the Scottish title together twice, said this about the great man to talkSPORT:

“He would offer himself up on the pitch to take the ball off players who weren’t having a good time, or players who had no options.

“He knew he might get a kick, but he always wanted to get on the ball. It didn’t matter if he was having a great game or a bad game, he wanted the ball from the first minute to the last.

“Guys like that are few and far between – he took on the responsibility for others.

“It’s easy to talk about his qualities as a footballer, but his qualities as a human being – he was top class. He gave me everything, both on the pitch and off the pitch.”

Archie Gemmill scoring against Northern Ireland in a 3-0 victory at Hampden Park in 1976. Masson and Dalglish scored the other goals.

Scotland won the Home Internationals Championship that year.

Crowd of 49,897 saw this match.

I thought Pat Jennings had saved a penalty in this game. However, watching the footage on YouTube recently. Bruce Rioch hits the post and then Jennings does made a save from the rebound .
However the ref immediately stops the game, giving Northern Ireland a free kick as Joe Jordan was in an off side position!
