A packed Hampden for Scotland 3 -1 England in April 1937. Official attendance of 149,415 saw it

The Saturday before the Scottish Cup Final between Aberdeen and Celtic saw a world record attendance of 147,365 and lasted, unbelievably, for just a week until the Scotland v England game!

Hampden's capacity back then was 185,000! And both games ‘real attendance’s’ were very probably closer to the 170,000 mark!

The England keeper Reg Matthews (of Third Division Coventry City!) makes a save at Hampden 14th April 1956. A 1-1 draw watched by 132,817 officially. Add 25-30,000 for true attendance.

We bought Reg Matthews from Coventry for £22,500 in November 1956 and he made 135 appearances for us.

East Germany score against the USSR in the Olympic Games Semi Final of 1976.

East Germany won the game 2-1. This match was held in the Montreal Olympic Stadium and watched by a crowd of 57,512

Most of these spectators probably weren’t from either East Germany or the USSR!😀

East Germany would go on and win Olympic Gold by beating Poland 3-1 in the Final.
