Semi - First Leg Ratings

Not sure if these have been done in one of the other threads - haven't seen any if they have. This is how I saw it anyway:

Cech 8 Solid - as good as ever and 1 very good and important save

Paulo 7.5 Did well - rarely trouble by that useless Dutch bloke

JT 7 OK - without being back to his best yet

Carvo 9 MOTM. Great throughout and set up the move for the goal. How many defenders would have just

hoofed it out?

Ashley 7 Mainly did a good job, although one rash challenge when Gerrard skipped past him could have cost

us

Maka 8 Back to something like the Maka we know - great job doing what he does best

Mikel 8 Another impressive showing. Showed a lot of composure and made a brilliant pass that Kalou should

have done more with

Lamps 7.5 Lot better and unlucky not to get on score sheet

Joe 7.5 Well taken goal - lively early on but tired - still a match winnner and what we've sorely missed when

he was out. But cut out the falls!

Droga 8.5 Liverpool fear him so much. Great display, spoilt just slightly by a few theatrics but not much.

Sheva 4 The one low point. The stage was set he might as well not have been there.

Kalou 6.5 Always lively, but needs to learn when to release that ball.

SWP 6 Didn't have long enough to make an impact but made one good run that ended up with a foul

(although not according to Carjaker!!)

I'm gonna stick up for Sheva!

He didn't have a good game - no arguments there.

But, he played left in a front three and that just isn't where we are going to get the best from him. The miss against Blackburn aside, his problem is not that he is missing chances, but that he isn't getting any.

He clearly isn't a winger in the Robben mould or a tricky dribbler like Joey. On the other hand he does finish well if put through in the box and he can create some space and get off a good shot - see Spurs in FA Cup.

His better performances have come when he is playing up front in a two.

So his mark was justified but I do think it is a bit unfair on him from an individual standpoint - he is playing where Jose wants him to for the benefit of the team. Why Jose thinks it is a good place to play him I don't know!

Cech 8

- World class save on Gerrards shot and he looked solid during the game apart from one time when he went out to get the ball. But still, great performance. Not his fault Pool didn't get too many shots on goal.

A. Cole 7

- Did well against Gerrard and wasn't fooled that much.

Terry 7

- Solid but not as good as he can be. Worked well together with Riccy.

Carvalho 9

- Great pass to Drogba and overall a great performance. I have critized him alot but he has really been great this season and last night he was superb.

Ferreira 7

- Solid but then again, he only faced Zenden. Still a good game and as long as he had some backup he looked sharp.

Lampard 6

- Should perhaps have scored a goal atleast but he didn't. Apart from the scoring chances I didn't see too much of him. I expect more from a world class player in a Champions League semi-final.

Makelele 8

- I can't remember seing much of him and that means he did a good job. Players like Maka needs to step up in big games and he did that last night.

Mikel 9

- I was impressed by him but now I'm in awe. As far as I could tell he didn't miss one single pass and some of them wasn't too easy. Looked good in the defence and helped Ferreira out whenever he needed to. Everything looked easy for him. Brilliant.

J. Cole 7

- Would have given him a higher rating but he looked tired late in the game. Nice goal and overall a good game.

Shevchenko 6

- Underrated by many in my oppinion. He's not in front of the goal scoring but he works his a*se off all the time to help the team. If I would rate him by his scoring ability then I would have given him a 3. I think he's a big reason for Drogbas success. Take Sheva off and Drogba won't do as well.

Drogba 9

- Great performance and great set-up for the goal. The best forward in the world and we can't afford to lose him. Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

Kalou 7

- Looked okay but should have done better on Mikels nice pass.

Wright-Philips 6

- Okay, but he didn't get much time to show what he can do.

Mourinho 9

- Handled everything well. Both before the game and during it. A slight drop in the rating for the penalty-claim. But still. Great job!

MOTM: Carvalho

- It was either Carvalho, Mikel or Drogba. Tough call but Carvalho was great and his pass that resulted in the goal was really nice.

I have to disagree about Maka. The reaon why you did not see him much was because he did a "Ballack" and vanished from the play for huge parts of the game. I was very disappointed in his performance, and thought he did very little right.

I am preparing myself to forgive you Phillip!! Maka has a fine game last night, did his job perfectly, Liverpool had one clear chance the whole game and a large amount of thanks for that goes to Maka, the Liverpool midfield didn't settle properly all evening and made many fundamental errors and a degree of thanks for that also goes to Maka.

he was my motm.

but it remains true- watching makelele on tv, he seems like any player could do what he does. that's why we've had talk of essien replacing him there, diarra, and mikel... but watching him live- it's an education. in it's own way, similar to watching ronaldinho or zidane- you are watching one of the top players in the history of european football IMO.
