Martin O'Neill fears Gareth Barry will quit Aston Villa this summer and has lined up Chelsea's Steve Sidwell as a replacement for his skipper.Barry still has two years to run on his current contract at Villa Park, but is attracting interest from Liverpool and Chelsea after another impressive season.

Rafael Benitez is rumoured to have already made an enquiry as to the midfielder's availability, with the prospect of launching a £14million raid this summer.

Villa are understandably keen to retain the England international's services, and will try and fend off the interest from elsewhere by offering their skipper a bumper £47,000 a week deal to remain in the Midlands.

However, that may not be enough to tempt Barry into committing his future to the club and O'Neill has revealed that the situation is starting to give him cause for concern.

"We will do our utmost to try and keep Gareth, whether we can I don't know," the Villa boss said in the Daily Mirror.

If Barry does decide to depart for pastures new over the close season O'Neill is believed to be keen on bringing in Sidwell as a replacement.

The former Reading midfielder has struggled to break into the first-team fold at Stamford Bridge this season and would welcome the opportunity to play regular football again.

It is thought that a bid of around £5million would be enough to persuade the Blues into a sale.

i would say YES!

no just give free sidwell we dont need it

a find a what a perfect play for chelsea look it lucho gonzales

he will perfect with essien - lucho - ballack

look he is realy comanad of midle look games with liverpool he total is better than mascherano

passing long ball perfect score a goal

maybe we can get shot of the flotsam we have. give em sidwell, ben haim, pizarro and we get barry and agboloahor. or we could just give em the players anyway.

I don't want Barry. I think he's a good player but no more than that. We've had our share of overrated and overpriced English players, if we are to spend big, let's go for a proven quality.

Think Barry's going to Liverpool. Anyway, priority number one for our midfield is to keep what we've got. I'm more than happy with Lamps, Ballack, Essien, Makalele and Mikel as the mainstays. I'd rather add someone who is (1) more attacking, and (2) much more creative and talented.

Cheers,

Butch

To replace Xabi Alonso.

Who is himself a quality player, so what does Gastric Bypass stand to gain off replacing him with Gareth Barry?

I think he's a good player and all, but like Coco says, we need creativity. We have our share of hustle/control players in the middle of park

if he goes to manchester city there could be "man siddy" headlines.

clearly that's the best solution for all.

Sid has just bought a house in Kingswood Surrey, maybe just an investment then!

a foolish move for all involved.

the property maket is in a slump, worst it's been for years, and off he goes an throws his money at a, no doubt, over the top, indoor swimming pool, fake tudor beams detached.

foolish, it's the only word fot it.

Even bots speak better English than Valim

I know we're supposed to be accepting, but icon_lol.gif

In a related note, has anyone heard this business about Patrik Berger telling Barry to go to Liverpool because its "the chance of a lifetime" and all that sh*te (dunno what hes talking about, Villa can surely finish fourth sometime soon). Well, I guess either Barry told O'Neill about it, or he was overheard, because now hes been told that he's finished by the boss. Rightfully so.

Barry has an important decision to make not just for his future but for Aston Villa Football Club. If he opts to stay, that could be the signal that they have arrived as a core team which could, with Lerner's money, start to knock on the door of the lofty "top four", and unlike Spuds, not lose their bottle on the 38th matchday
