charierre Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Does anyone agree with me that it was convenient that Rio got a back injury for this game? The kind of game JT might look bad if things go pear shaped and a good one to miss.

The kind of game JT might look bad if things go pear shaped and a good one to miss. If things go pear shaped against Andorra we might as well withdraw from the international scene and take up fishing. What I was thinking is, following Lampard hat thick tonight will he get the same praise Gerard did last time when he led England, without Lampard in the team, to a win against the mighty Andorra.
byatt Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 anything less then a win by 3 goals and a clean sheet will be dissapointing, with the quality we supposedly have we should be beating teams like Andorra with ease
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Well that is me fairly safe for Monday at work - unless England lose I will take no flack - Scotland just lost to Macedonia.
geezer Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Well that is me fairly safe for Monday at work - unless England lose I will take no flack - Scotland just lost to Macedonia. I thought MacEdonia was one of the Scottish players.
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Every single ounce of credibility Capello has built up over an impressive career has been shattered in one team announcement James, Johnson, Lescott, Terry, A Cole, Walcott, Lampard, Barry, Downing, Rooney, Defoe.
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Half an hour gone - 0-0, England woeful. I've seen coffins with better movement that Downing and if I ever ever ever hear someone claim Rooney is a world class footballer I will be forced to show them this past 30 minutes!
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Did we actually appoint a new manager or is McLaren wearing a Capello mask. This is the same England we have been watching for years now - not just in terms of the personnel but also the style of play and the fact we can't get past 20 minutes of a football match without reverting to a long ball game and crossing from so ridiculously deep that even when the cross isn't massively wide of the danger area it has hung in the air so long it is a doddle for the keeper to come out and claim it. This shower are appalling.
Essien's Strike Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 hpw are you guys watching it? i cant see it on the tv guide... :s
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 It is on Setanta which I don't have - I will PM you stream details
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Joe on for DOwning - farcical he didn't start. Heskey also on
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 And Joe scores!! Now don't be an idiot again Fabio.
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 First was a volley from close range - took it well but would have been pretty poor if he has missed it. Second was a good ball through from Rooney and Joe dinked it over the keeper from about 6 yards - again he took it well but again you would have been disappointed if he had missed it. Wasn't so much the quality of his finishes that were key, it was the fact he was actually looking to run into dangerous positions when we were in possession. This is something that not a single other player on the park can claim for the whole game!
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Lampard off, Beckham on. Another fairly poor shift by Lampard in an England jersey I'm afraid.
sweet waffle Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 (edited) Beckham on for Lampard. Surprisingly no boos. I thought Lamps had played pretty well tonight not that you'd think it from the commentary. Expect him to get slated tomorrow in the red tops. Edited September 6, 2008 by sweet waffle
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 I don't think he played well. Tonight was a great opportunity for him to orchestrate things in the middle of the park - no Hollywood stuff, just sensible and effective football but I think he failed. Granted it is hard to create a huge amount when you get the ball and the opponents have 10 men behind the ball but Lamps has to be good enough to deal with that and I just don't think he showed any imagination tonight at all.
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 2-0 FT. I guess some people will say it is the result that counts and it was a professional job etc etc but for me it showed one again what we already know. England lack creativity and lack quality up front. very pedestrian and far too often we opt for hoofing the ball in the air. We do not have a striker of any quality, Downing is atrocious and although some will say Walcott looked lively tonight he also showed that when under pressure his first touch is nowhere near good enough. A quality full back would have him in his pocket. I don't fancy our chances on Wednesday one bit.

Wasn't he responsible for two of the passes in the first half that gave us out best chances and his freekick lead to Joey's first? I'm pretty sure he was. Lamps did the neat and tidy stuff and tried a few fancy passes like you'd expect/want him to do against a second rate team, like you say the 10 men behind the ball was problematic but the annoying thing for me in the first half was Rooney, Defoe and Downing's movement or lack thereof. I think we'll be lucky to come away from Croatia with anything.
loz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 I won't argue with you about Rooney, Defoe and Downing - the three of them put in performances that would have had Mansfield Town rejecting them!!
Gem Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Joe started on the bench - fair enough, Capello didn't want to risk him really for Wednesday - so that, I think was a good decision. We should be able to beat Andorra without him right?.......... Oh... Frank has been fighting a fitness battle since he touched down with the England squad, that could explain why he was taken off after 70 odd minutes. Put some good balls in... for a guy struggling for fitness, it was a okay shift. Not bad by all means. JT - shut up Waddle you prick, JT was great... although a few loose balls and not really tested.

Its not so much loose balls as passing to the flat footed unfocused lescot. As a defender you should be making your self avalible when the ball comes accross the back line but lescot was flat footed every time and looking very uninterested on the game in general i will never understand the idea of downing, ashly young would be so much better a proposition. Cole helped to take it up a notch but the biggest problem we have at the moment is that luca toni would walk in to are starting 11 and be the best striker up there..
