Massively sub-standard performance, obviously. However, the players are only human, over the past couple of days or so, the majority of them wouldn’t even have known what competitions they’d be eligible for, not to mention the strong possibility that their collective international careers would be at an end. Stress or what? Stress can be massively draining, which would explain why, especially during the latter stages of the game, the Brighton players looked so much sharper. Also it’s just a few short days since the epic performance against Man City. Add this to the stress outlined above, and it’s little wonder that the players weren’t exactly at their best. So how about we write this one off, as another “at least we didn’t lose to that shower of sh*te” games, and look forward to a vastly improved performance, and a hopefully positive result against the Spammers.

I think maybe you miss the point. First off, the club realistically had no option but to take part in competitions run by UEFA, but could quite easily have turned down the invitation to join the Super League. Secondly there’s the whole issue of elitism, which again is purely down to finance. I’m no fan of UEFA either. Just for example, I’d love a return to an old fashioned European Cup, along with the re-introduction of the Cup Winners Cup. But that won’t happen. As it stands, it’s feasible for any Premier League team to qualify for the Champions League, even more so for the Europa League, but the proposed (fingers crossed the f**king thing still fails to materialise) is a breakaway, not just from UEFA, but from the Premier League. None of the “lesser” clubs have got an earthly of getting in - unless they happen to be picked up by a mega rich benefactor, as may be happening with Newcastle. In which they too will then qualify for Super League membership, on purely financial grounds. And what the hell has “facing criticism” got to do with anything? Is it supposed to be some form of consolation that the other eleven founder members are being slagged off left right and centre? Sorry but that’s utter sh*te. If popularity is what you want, then find someone else to support. We’ve never been media darlings, seldom if ever been flavour of the month. As I wrote earlier in this thread, the very idea of a Super League is a massive step too far for me. If we’re involved, I’ll be turning my back on the club. I won’t be watching the Qatar World Cup either.

Ironically in retrospect, I referred to the new Champions League Format as another nail in the coffin of “elite” football because it looked to be another step closer to a European Super League. Now that the f**king abomination appears to be with us, as far as I’m concerned it’s the final nail, a massive step too far. Not financially of course, because the self-described “elite” will be raking it in financially from the global market. But as far as I’m concerned, if this thing does go ahead, it’ll well and truly be the end for me. Half a century of support down the drain.

Problem is, they’re looking at a global TV market, encompassing China, Japan and any number of countries without a long-standing tradition of “top-class” football. Qatar, with its brand new blood soaked stadia will be in prime position to host European Super League matches The USA will naturally expect to host its share of “matchups” in the newly formed Judas League. One thing you can guarantee is that the backers will have done their homework: what they’ll be offering will no doubt make the current Sky Sports type deals look like small change. I reckon they’ll be aiming for a series of Super Bowl type TV showpieces, but with a more global appeal. Yeah I know it stinks.

If we sign up for this atrocity, that’ll be the end of it for me. No arguments, no compromise. Nigh on half a century on from my first time at the Bridge, If the Club in their “wisdom” do actually sign up for a European Super League, I’ll consider myself a former Chelsea supporter.
