I saw Roy Ayers at the Forum earlier this year, and he would fall into the “ too crotchety” bracket now alas. Had a chat with a 93 year old jazz drummer a while back. He was a navigator on a Wellington Bomber in WW2- got shot down and spent 3 years in a POW camp- there were 3 bands in the camp, one of them needed a drummer and the rest in history. He could still perform a decent drum roll till the end. I suspect he was taking Cod Liver Oil Capsules as suppositories- keeps the elbows and wrists nice and lubricated! Ps Marlena Shaw’s now a trifle too old to be honest. We saw her at Ronnie Scott’s. A mate of mind who was pissed, thought he was entering the karzi and basically ended up backstage, catching her without her wig on. She didn’t exactly chase him out with a broom but it wasn’t far off!

He was superb. Really needs to work on his personality and stagecraft though!

Gutted I never went. I’d just started work and had to cover the Saturday. I had a loony cousin who told me he going down with his mates and kipping on the beach. Prior to this he’d shown zero interest in football, so remember thinking if the likes of him are going there’s bound to be plenty of action. Missed out on Leeds at home through work too, but did make the next home v Barnsley. People get the two mixed up; mass celebrations and pitch invasion.

West Ham thought of us as ground and train wreckers. When I started Secondary School in 78, I palled up with 2 twins, one was West Ham and the other Chelsea, and both were allowed to go to away games up and down the country at 12 or 13, and they did this all the time till we left school in 82. -no chance with my parents. We were both in the 2nd Division, and I’d get first hand reports- from what I remember the away gates when Chelsea and West Ham visited were pretty similar- maybe we were both taking on average 3000 to Northern Grounds. Chelsea did take more home ends than the Pikies back then according to them.

First time I’ve set eyes on this thread. I’m seeing Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band at the Half Moon in Putney tonight. Hes gotta be marching on a bit. The length of the set is probably linked to the endurance of his bladder!

Was also in the Shed that night- had migrated to Gate 13 or the West Stand Seats a couple of years previous and only really stood if it was a sell out or was skint. ( Didn’t take to the benches much- bit uncomfortable for my liking, especially after they became concrete ) An older bloke that came with us that night was so appalled he never went to the Bridge again for years. Next morning it was all over the front and back pages. The Luton v Millwall riot wasn’t long after that. Might have been a load a bollox but remember reading in one of papers some Millwall fan saying how they were a bit jealous of the publicity Chelsea got after the Sunderland game and thought they’d make some headlines themselves. I must admit if it did kick off the next morning I’d be checking out all the papers. Edit: the next day on Robbie Vincent’s talk show it was like a hooligans convention ( West Ham and Chelsea fans after the Parsons Green incident.) ” They got what they deserved turning up on our manor with blades” ” We were trying to get off the train and have it wiv em” etc etc

Don’t you just hate those come and get me statements drafted by players agents that all sound the same. Cliche 1) Whilst I am happy at Chelsea in football you never know Cliche 2) It is true, that many clubs are interested in me Cliche 3) It has always been my dream to play for eg Sc**thorpe United. Normally rounded off with something along the lines of “ at the moment I have a contract with Chelsea, where the fans have been amazing to me.” .........yawn

Makes me proud as punch to have a Chelsea player that is probably in the world top 3 at the moment. Have we ever had a player in our history generally accepted to be in that bracket before? ( I can’t think of one) He plays the game the right way too. With a smile, doesn’t go over too often, and when he does he’s back on his feet straight away without theatrics. No big time Charlie, superstar demeanour about the fella either. A great egg all round.

Gallas was a flying machine, whilst Carvahlio was more street smart IMO. Superb positional play, adept at blocking, holding and the assorted dark arts.

I used to like the Union Jack badges with Chelsea running through the middle. I occasionally wear a faded to purple sink scarf from the 70s to games. Completely off topic but having a trial separation from the Fuhrer and moved back to Wandsworth yesterday, as the crow flies probably a mile from SB. There’s a flat roof above my balcony which Im gonna try and get onto, reason being reckon you can see the floodlights from there!

Have never worn a replica shirt to a game. Always thought you were far more vulnerable away from the bulk of Chelsea fans, going back to the motor. If it looked dodgy it would be head down, look like you know where your going, and no talking and giving away your accent. Had close shaves at Old Trafford and Leicester years back.

Romans wealth has diminished slightly over the last few years. He’s definately not a hoarder and splashes the cash like no ones business, but like all of life’s over achievers, I don’t imagine he’s delighted at being poorer than he once was

It reached Number 5 in the charts. Was only 6 and have got a very vague memory of it, but remember much more clearly Spurs’s Cockerel Chorus Nice One Cyril which came out a year later- both songs were released pre League Cup Final matches. Ours reached number 5 in the charts, compared to 13 with the other mobs. Was Blue is the Colour a better song or did we have more fans than them at the time? Bit of both probably. Also around that time to the tune or maybe slightly earlier, we used to walk around the playground singing to the tune of Jesus Christ Superstar “ Georgie Best, Superstar. Wears frilly knickers and a lady’s bra”

Back in August I plumped for City Liverpool Spurs Chelsea. No great change but if I could make an adjustment now I’d swap us for Rottenham.

Didn’t a Chelsea fan die at Birmingham one year? Never been to St Andrews, but believe once in the 70s we got a bit of a hiding.

During the FA Cup v Liverpool game in 82 loads of people watched the game from the roof of the block of flats seen in the bottom picture. I think there’s a picture of it in the Spurs QF programme.
