Wolves Away. Also went to this game probably one of the best away days ever. Again the journey started home to sheff utd the week before. A mate had gone up to Wolverhampton the week before and got 20 odd tickets, it was so easy he did a repeat journey. After buying tickets for our group of fans he put them on general sale in the Weavers on farm lane, ( a great pub in them days). Walking to the ground all you heard was has anybody got any Wolves tickets or tickets for sale especially in around the chippy outside Fulham Broadway, a rumour went round that a certain person from the Home Counties had 250 tickets. Urban myths eh ? Anyway on the Saturday of the Wolves game 9 of us from Malmesbury went up to Wolves with no plan. Leaving the M6 we were immediately struck by the urban beauty of the area. Passing a plastic estate pub set on a lovely estate with 2 trees we saw a van with a slough address on the side. We decided this would be our beer stop, the pub was full of Chelsea, all went well until about 2 when the landlord said he had been told to close. There was major ructions in the lounge bar as a large group of Chelsea left to get onto a coach.This was unusual as in 1977 Chelsea fans didn,t appear to use coaches much . I think the coach company had a Camberwell address or was called Grove coaches. The other unusual thing was that several Chelsea fans were wearing Pringle jumpers. We drove into Wolverhampton and found a nice gravel carpark, near the inner ring road. In front of us was a large group of Chelsea being escorted to the ground chatting one said they had come up on the inter city, and that a special wasn,t far behind. Going into the ground nobody was concerned who we supported and once up on the Southbank it was wow. Despite heavy police numbers you could walk around the bottom of the southbank and up behind the Wolves fans. I saw this happen twice both times the Wolves fans started heading down and away from the problem.This seemed to add an even greater police presence seperating the southbank. Anyway the game was a bit untidy the result much more tidy especially at the end when the Tottenham news came through After joining the pitch celebrations our exit from the ground was a bit more problematic. As we left we were under bombardment from bricks masonary etc from Wolves fans Chelsea fans were up by the subway with little space below to deploy. The police bore the brunt of the bombardment trying to seperate the fans eventually the wolves fans tried a charge. A loud voice rang up Chelsea stand you might guess who that was dark hair sideburns. We stood and then charged forcing a retreat this allowed more chelsea to join in. A 2nd charge found wolves fans heading away out of the Black country . The old bill re established some order and got us moving towards the station. This gave us an opportunity to slip away and head for home. I gather there were more problems in Wolverhampton but have no idea what happened. The journey home and subsequent lagers a bit of an anti climax.

Unsung hero who soldiered on into the 70s rip.

Moved to Wiltshire in the mid 70s could not afford to see Chelsea much so went with schoolmates to watch Swindon. Used to go into the Don Rodgers sports shop anything from fishing tackle to golf clubs, the only decent shop Swindon ever had. Anyway went in their before a Swindon v Millwall game a group of blokes all mid 20s + were buying darts it was only Swindon !

Talking of Horror shows to any early 70s teenagers on this site were tank tops a warning of what lay ahead ?

Always thought Arse fans were the scousers of the south massive sense of entitlement. I know i, am in a minority but they are more disease ridden than the team that ends in s. As for the independent republic up north can we have our taxes back ?

Did anybody else go to Wrexham away game 79/80 season when it was snowy. Chelsea charged at Wrexham who retreated problem was it was icey and everybody went arse over.

Charlie Cooke was just a great watch . Also remember the noise where i lived in hayes when both goals went. Shame on dirty Leeds.

Its getting to feel a lot like Christmas

Thought Gallagher played really well kinda of glued the team together.

Managed to get some tickets at last, like many chelsea fans don,t always leave the virtual waiting room any poorer. There are many chelsea fans who struggle big time to get tickets thus the need for a bigger stadium. And yet i remember the 70s and the started redevelopment that went so wrong, so it is a worry. For the record my last virtual waiting room success was Plymouth in the cup. Hope Carlton Fairweather is not playing !

I approach the weekend with a big smile.
