I still think Ozil would be a smashing signing - the lad has good raw materials - but Loz is right, we need to temper our expectations of him a little. I didn't think he played badly against Argentina at all. They are a tough defensive unit (how ironic, LOL). I think he will only get better, which is a frightening prospect. This is the sort of risk we should be taking. If it doesn't work out, fair enough; we tried. If we don't take these kinds of risks, we'll never get the next Messi, until he's 38! Cheers, Butch

We've either released or are close to releasing/selling: Ballack, Joe Cole, Belletti and Deco; by my calculations that's a combined age of 120 odd years. If we sign Benayoun, we'd still be about 90 years to the good. And yes, it's a joke Cheers, Butch

CM: Lamps, Mikel, Essien, Matic (Ballack sold, Deco to be sold, Belletti released?) AM/W: Malouda, Kalou, Kakuta (Joe released) ST: Drogba, Anelka, Sturridge, Borini I don't know about you, but looking at the above list, I think we're a few players short. First order of business: we cannot allow Hilario or Carvalho to leave without replacements. By all means, promote Ross to second choice behind Petr but we need an experienced keeper to cover for the two. Hilario may not be great, but which great keeper would be third choice? As for Riccy, there could be interest this summer, but we need to be smart about this. CB is a key defensive position. Maybe Ivanovic could cover, but unless management really feel Bruma is ready, they should think about this carefully. There should be enough games in a season to allow Alex and Riccy to get enough games to keep them both happy. You can understand the Sergio Ramos rumors though - a younger player with a lot of experience at a big club; especially if we're looking for a quick pal for Torres (stretching it, I know). Elsewhere in defense, I really feel we're set. Paul could be allowed to leave for his own good. Again, I don't see a need to release him for the sake of it, if he is happy keeping cover as third choice. He doesn't strike me as a negative influence. It is the middle and forward lines that need strengthening. With the impending sale of Deco to Brazil, and Joe's release on a free, we've basically lost our creativity from the middle. And while many Chelsea fans have not seen the use in Ballack, I believe he has done a solid job for us in midfield for the most part. With those three gone, there is a gaping hole that needs to be filled. Rumors of Benayoun abound, but I doubt Carlo eyes him as a CM. If he signs, and if he plays, I believe it will be further up the pitch, or at least as a link between the middle and forward lines. I still think we need another CM to provide more all round midfield work. I really haven't a clue who Chelsea are interested in (of course), but I'd be surprised if Schweinsteiger and De Rossi aren't continually and increasingly linked. Just a hunch. Further up the pitch, it would be nice for us to sign the quintessential #10 - the awe-inspiring midfield/forward player with skill to spare, who would take us out of our seats with his exciting play. Alas, all I ask for is someone who can beat his man every once in a while. At the moment, we essentially have one player anywhere close to that (Malouda), and another clumsy one who has a good game once in a while but who does like to run with the ball at his feet (Kalou). That's about it. The rest need service to do anything. If Benayoun arrives, he'd be another possibility, but really not very awe-inspiring. My thoughts keep going back to the matches with Inter Milan. We really needed someone who could do something extra special in those matches as the two teams canceled each other out so much. I fear we will run into more of these sorts of games, and with Deco and Joe gone we're even less-equipped to come out on top. I really think we are at least 2 good players short of what will be required - a good CM and a wing/forward who can do something different. Cheers, Butch

Schweinsteiger is a mainstay of Bayern and a fan favorite. He's also the right side of 30 and doing well in the World Cup. Real Madrid are also reportedly interested. I sincerely doubt he won't be "astronomically priced". But I'd be happy if we signed him. Cheers, Butch

Would be a terrific signing, but find it hard to believe Bayern would let him go. He must be to them what Lamps and JT are to us. As such, to even make them consider, it would have to be something crazy (20-25 million). That's the only thing that makes me doubt it would happen. But from a footballing perspective, what a signing that would be. As for Ozil, I'd like us to take a gamble on a player like this: young, good footballing head, skillful, deceptively quick...even if there are questions on his strength and consistency, what a luxury to have! Would go a big ways to easing the pain re Joe Cole. He'd be an exciting signing. Cheers, Butch

I simply cold not disagree more. When Ash was out and Yuri filled in, you could see very clearly that we lost the offensive edge up that left side. Yuri may be slowly getting used to the EPL but he has been nowhere near Ash's levels of performances so far. I simply would not touch Kaka with a barge stick if it meant letting Ash go. Remember, we want to improve our squad. Why take 2 steps back if the ability to then take 3 steps forward is so marred with uncertainty?! Cheers, Butch

Mascherano, as much as I don't like him, would also be a good technical and tactical signing. I also didn't like Ash when he was at Arsenal but he's grown on me. I am getting concerned with Ess and if there is anyone we've missed this season in the CL, it's been him. Cheers, Butch
