MOTM vs Leicester
The winner was scored by Lamps. Originally, they weren't sure if his shot had crossed the line and Sheva just knocked it in to be sure so his wasn't an assist either. Cheers, Butch

Frank Lampard
As I've said before, he doesn't look like he's enjoying his football. Having said that, he does look like he wants to prove to everyone what a great professional he is and that he can still do well without being happy. I cannot bear to think of Chelsea without him. Drogba? He's said he wants to move more than just about anyone else on this current squad. Lamps has NEVER said he wants to move. He has always remained committed. JT and Lamps are the heart and soul of this Chelsea. Sure, one day they will be replaced, but I hope Abramovich does EVERYTHING in his power to keep Lamps here. Grant's job of "rebuilding/retouching" Chelsea would be that much easier. I've kept note of Chelsea over recent years and Lampard seems to me to be the one we struggle most without. With him, our transition from defense to attacks is much smoother and we look much more threatening. JT may be the undisputed leader of the team, but he plays in defense and cannot marshal us going forward. THAT role is Lampard's. And he does it with aplomb. Cheers, Butch

Life after Schalke.
I have to say you guys are a teensy weensy bit barsh on Callista here. I mean certainly your tone is a wee bit over the top, Gullit. Maybe I'm missing something here but she does make a fair point when she says that having key players back of course makes a difference. Having said that, yes, there are telling differences to not only the way we play, but seemingly also to our mindset, and Grant must be given some credit for that. Though he hasn't won me over, we are playing a whole lot better than what I expected at this early stage in his reign. I think I have underestimated both him and the players. Cheers, Butch

Frustrated yet again..
I don't think the women on this board are going to take kindly to that; nor should they. Cheers, Butch

Petr Cech
I actually think the Cech and Robben signings were instigated by Peter Kenyon as they were on Man Utd's list of long term targets. Claudio was likely asked for his opinion but I don't think they were HIS signings. Cheers, Butch

Chelsea v Schalke 04
Obviously, it is going to take some time for Grant and Ten Cate to stamp their style on this squad of players. The main difference I can see is that we're moving the ball around quicker. In terms of the match and how individual players fared, I thought Makalele had another brilliant game. Our games are now a bit more open than they used to be when Jose was in charge. I'm not sure how much of this is down to us wanted to play entertaining football and how much is down to (a) injuries, and (B) players still not got their heads screwed on completely, but Makalele's experience is extremely important for us at the moment and I find that he is shining through. Essien is playing a few notches below his best and Lampard is slowly getting into his rhythm although I am concerned he does not seem to be enjoying his football so much these days. He's also not getting into the shooting positions he usually does (consistently). Joe Cole was definitely NOT off-side when Drogba knocked the ball through to him with the outside of his boot to send him through one on one in that first half. I just can't get over the number of awful refereeing decisions I am seeing in games. I am really getting to the point where I want to be done of all referees and just go totally to technology. Who the heck wants to have to keep debating refereeing decisions at the end of games rather than talking about the football. I think the standard of refereeing is dire, dire, dire! Anyway, it was a good win and it must be doing our confidence no end of good at a time when we need it. Finally, it was really great to see Bridgey out there for us. He put in some beautiful crosses. Made my mind wander back to the days of Crespo. Cheers, Butch

One last post on my frustration at Jose's departure...
I promise this will be the last... You know how they say that a person deals with a loss in stages? Anger, depression, sadness and acceptance (or something like that)? I think it is going to take me a while to get over the parting of ways between Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho. He literally did take the English Premiership, and Chelsea, by storm. He integrated himself right into the fabric of the club and stamped a brand of football, style and mentality, into everything Chelsea did. As such, Chelsea without Jose is going to need time to readjust. Avram Grant has the unenviable task of the "follow-up gig". Nobody wants to go on stage right after the best show in town. There's too much pressure and too many comparisons will be made. Plus, the audience never wanted to see the best show leave the stage! As such, they will harbor some resentment towards you. I want to go on record as saying that although I don't want Grant as our manager, it is not as much about the man himself as it is about my personal belief that the odds are stacked too much against him and we don't have the time for trial and error at this delicate stage (of the season and of our club's history). I think most Chelsea fans, or football fans in general, will understand what I mean about the delicate stage in the season so I won't really go into that. Suffice it to say, the EPL champions of the past three seasons have all has good starts and led from the fore. We are already behind as it is. We need to steady ship as soon as possible. But I wanted to talk a little bit about my thoughts on Chelsea Football Club's chance of history and my personal ambitions for the club. Don't let anyone kid you, we are not a club with the same footing as a Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, AC Milan or even Liverpool. Yes, on the pitch we can compete depending on the money we plough into the team, but long-term we don't have the same base of supporters to really compete; yet. I had high hopes when Roman came in, after the initial questions ran into my mind about whether or not we could trust him, etc... But those were not really footballing issues, just ones that could affect the club. But after seeing his obvious commitment, I did begin to see the chance of a good future with him. Clearly, I am happy that we've taken to branding the club through Peter Kenyon's expertise, as well as re-building our youth system, crucial for our long-term future and viability. These things are important, but I think one of the most important things is on-the-pitch success. I have a lot of old-school Chelsea friends and I love them to death. I really do. But, what happens when the current generation of Chelsea fans die out? Who will be following us? We need more new fans. I understand some old-school fans' dislike for "johnny-come-lately's" or "wagon-hoppers" but I think those are unfair tags for new fans. We need to expand our fan base. You look at all the "big" clubs; they have massive stadia. We're talking upwards of 50 or 60,000 fans for every match. I cannot honestly say that we could fill such a stadium at the moment. I love Stamford Bridge too, but I think if we realistically want to compete long-term with these "big" clubs we will ultimately have to move into a 60-000+ seater "Samsung Arena" or something like that. I think it is inevitable. We've been making fun of Arsenal and the fact they've had to scrimp and save since they've moved into their new Emirates Stadium, but in the course of about a year, they are already making a lot more money and their long-term future is secured. I don't want to give them any credit but I feel I have no choice (Chelsea old-school fans can insert here a comment about me buggering off and supporting Arsenal if I so like what they're doing - but that is not an option for me). And how do we expand our fan base? Success, pure and simple. Some people would argue pretty football, but I don't buy it. You have to do the basics first and then you can think about the aesthetics. Sometimes Jose Mourinho's Chelsea bored the heck out of me. but you have to admit that teams like Arsenal and Barcelona, pretty as they were to watch, did not enjoy playing us at all. And how can you argue with a 3-year unbeaten home record? That doesn't come from playing pretty football. Pretty football results in big wins interspersed with frustrating losses. I believe we needed to stick with Jose for at least 5 years and probably more like ten years to rack up the culture of sustained success that would win new fans and keep them coming. Only after we accomplish that first phase can we think about tinkering and "improving". What Roman is doing now with demanding "pretty" football is amounting to the Real Madrid/Barcelona approach but without the "winning history" that is keeping them going. Compared to them, we're still flash in the pan; slightly better than Blackburn but not much so. I'm truly disappointed we've thrown a really promising opportunity of really building an era down the drain. How many Jose Mourinho's do you think there are now? People were against us because we were successful and challenging the established powers. I think a lot of people have tried to undermine us, and disappointingly, they have succeeded. In a way, I think Jose's immediate success has given Roman the false idea that money CAN buy success. I have this feeling that he now feels it is he more than anybody else that is important, and he has the right to expect whatever he wants as long as he ploughs in the money. If that is the case, he is wrong. At this juncture, I wish it were I that were wrong, and I continue to hope I'm proven so. How many clubs of our stature pre-Roman could dream about not just competing with the big clubs on the pitch on a per-game basis, but also competing with them off it. This is a one-off chance and we really need to grab the opportunity to establish this club while we have this level of financial clout. But money only goes so far and so the financial side and the footballing side really need to be kept separate and run by experts in the respective fields. But what's done is done. My concern is how do we limit the damage already done, and how do we rectify this as quickly as possible. We seem to be keen on bringing in coaching staff to replace that which we've lost, and that will come in and support Grant in his role as manager. I've already said I have my reservations about Avram, although I cannot of course say he won't be successful if given the time. My feeling is that he won't be given the time and all this will just be a waste of time. If we're looking for a long-term replacement, I feel we need to move now. Despite arguments that this season is not yet lost, I think we're bordering on needing a miracle to win any of the big competitions. Maybe a good cup run is still a possibility. Maybe we'll put all our remaining resources into the competition that the players will most easily be inspired to win, not for the manager or club, but for themselves, as it is the remaining competition they haven't won together as a group - the Champions League. The 2-1 win at the Mestalla was hailed by all and sundry as the turn-around game. I didn't think we played all that great, and Valencia will adjudge themselves unlucky to lose that. But our players did show that there is still something left in the tank and that the right kind of inspiration can help bring it out of them. The return of Carvalho and Drogba of course also played a big part in making us look more solid and dangerous, but it would be a bit of a concern to think we've turned the corner. I don't think we have, and again I hope I'm proven wrong. I have gone on record as saying that while we're still in transition, there will be games where our players individual form will help us produce some impressive results, of which the Valencia result was one, but we will also have some frustrating results as well. It is going to be a ding-dong season until our dressing room becomes harmonized once again. Players are human beings. They have feelings. Sure, they're being paid top dollar and you expect them to be professional but you can't expect them to feel nothing. I am sure the players are trying to stick together as a unit and get back to producing the results. Maybe the manager will win them over more quickly than expected. Maybe we'll surprise everyone. I'm already seeing a lot of articles with this smug tone of voice from opposing fans, mainly Liverpool ones, who are writing us off with glee. They know we were one of their main challenges to overcome on the way to their main target of the EPL trophy (as well as everything else). Their relatively good start also has them walking on air. Well, I simply don't have the energy to argue at the moment, nor do I have reason as yet because we need to take care of our own business before we can really stand up and seriously argue our chances. But I'd love for this to be a possibility. And I'd love for us to do the right thing and appoint for the long term future - some like, dare I say it, Jose Mourinho. But as I said, that's it; I'm firmly behind Avram now. I want the best for Chelsea as well; goes without saying, really. Cheers, Butch

Bolton for the picking
Saying Kalou gets into goal scoring positions is like saying Gronkjaer gets into crossing positions. So what? Cheers, Butch

Is this Correct?
Reminds me for a South American goalie (I don't remember who) who tried to get a match abandoned by doing something to his face after something was thrown onto the pitch in his vicinity. Anyone remember? Absolute disgrace. Cheers, Butch

Valencia Away - Match Preview
Well, when you look back to your original post, I don't think it can be misconstrued for anything else as you're talking about "many posts here" and "these Chelsea fans that were hoping for a loss". If you mean fans from a different fan site then you should explicitly say so, particularly when you're clearly deriding them for what they're doing. Otherwise, of course there will be misunderstandings. I reiterate that nobody here has a hidden agenda against Avram. IF he can (a) stand up and be his own man as opposed to Roman's yeas man, (B) win over the dressing room, and © show he can manage against the top rate managers of our "rivals", then he would of course have our backing. One final point: history has shown before that if fans are going to be coming onto the forums everytime a result suits their argument to deride fellow fans who are not of the same opinion, they are likely going to have to take a taste of their own medicine sometime in the future. This is only one good win out of how many matches (two if you count the Hull game)? At this point, it is just as likely we're not going to win our next match as it is we will. Cheers, Butch

Valencia Away - Match Preview
I simply have not seen anyone on here hoping for a loss. You must be mistaking pessimism with hoping Chelsea lose. They are two totally different things. And then you put "fans" in quotations as if to deride these people who have been pessimistic, and which you have now branded as wanting Chelsea to lose. I believe you are totally wrong. As for the blame-credit schedule, as you so call it, it is down to frustration. Most people on here don't have confidence in Grant. If he really does well for us we'll all be happy. He's associated with the perceived "control freak" nature of Roman, and I think a lot of fans also are getting the feeling the players don't respect him and are not "playing for him". I'm not saying it is fair, as it clearly is not, but it is human nature and we're ALL human. Cheers, Butch

Avram Grant - short-term appointment?
Many of us, well if not all, feel that Avram Grant is not the man to lead Chelsea following the departure of Jose Mourinho. On a footballing level, he may be a decent manager, although he doesn't really have the credentials to impress us. With time, he may turn out to do a reasonable job, a la Claudio Ranieri. However, a few things conspire against his success. For starters, he is inheriting a very disappointed and volatile dressing room. Most of the players are both disappointed and angry that Jose has been "allowed to leave". On top of that, Grant has been seen (it is rumored) to be part of the process/problem. I suspect players are not going to be entirely happy with him for that association. His lack of credentials (lack of top flight coaching badge counts against him as well) is not going to make his acceptance any easier. The bottom line is that he is going to have a hell of a fight on his hands to win over the dressing room. And win them over is what he is going to have to do in order to get them pulling in the same (and right) direction again. Without this, we are going to be very inconsistent at best and our play is going to depend on individual form rather than team strength. I've gone on record as saying that we need a strong personality, preferably with good track record, to win over the dressing room right away. Allowing things to go on as they are is going to be detrimental. Relying on the professionalism of the players is going to be inadequate, at least in the short term. The players are human beings. The players will of course rebound, given the time. But I feel this frustration/disappointment/anger bubbling underneath could lead to a snowballing effect in the short-term that is un-needed and unwanted. So, the sort of it all is that the ideal solution would be to bring in a Capello or Lippi, strong managers with proven track records who are available right now. Of course, whether Roman Abramovich wants to do that is something entirely different. Let's think about this for a moment. Avram Grant was brought in from Portsmouth and looks to be entirely an Abramovich signing. Obviously, there is something there Roman likes. I don't have any idea what, and speculation will only be unfair on him and possibly misconstrued. Chelsea have also been at pains to stress that Grant is a long-term appointment. These two things together make it difficult to fathom that he will be removed in the short-term. Where would he go from here? He's an Abramovich man. The logical move would be back to some "technical director" position, but how would that be viewed by people, including the players? It would also take some significant back-tracking from the management. Fire him? Really? Although I desperately want a big name, big personality, successful manager to join us (as soon as possible), I'm finding it hard to believe this will be the case. So, who's mistaken? Is it us for our belief that he doesn't have what it takes? Or is it Roman for believing he does have what it takes or that it is better to stick with Grant despite him not having what it takes so that we can have a better selection of managers in the off-season? Who in their current jobs would be available in the summer that are better than what is available now (and I'm talking Lippi and Capello specifically)? You can forget about Fergie or Wenger, as if I needed to say that. Hiddink is the only one I can think of. Rijkaard? Van Basten? Really? This is why I don't understand why we're waiting, if that is what we're doing. If we are, it must be Hiddink; there cannot be any other explanation. Back to the alternative though, if Abramovich fancied Grant enough to hire him, then I suspect he really does have faith that he can do something as manager of Chelsea. To be honest, I think he's over-estimating the former Israeli national team manager, and underestimating the unhappiness of the players. Either way, he's harboring some unrealistic expectations. To a certain extent, I have to agree that he is going to be hampered by the quality of players he has inherited. We're all now expecting the team to play attacking, uninhibited football, as the lack of that was one of the supposed reasons Roman wanted Jose out. However, he doesn't really have much cutting edge, or speed, in his front line. We've always been more about power under Jose. We have some skillful footballers, such as Joe Cole and Florent Malouda, raw skill in Kalou and raw speed in Shawn but I'm wondering is this is going to give the right blend to do what Grant wants to do. Drogba's Drogba - the king of power football, a bit clumsy on the ball in most situations (flashes of skill of course). The supporting cast of Shevchenko and Pizarro don't have any pace, and I haven't seen much of control or powerful shot on them yet either. Makes you wonder what they are going to be able to pull out of their pockets to surprise defenders. So I'm not seeing how Grant is going to be able to introduce much change to the way we play football with the current players he has at his disposal. Unleashing Joe and Florent may be possible changes, but you have to wonder if that is for the best. Still, we better hope it is. I think we need Lampard back pronto. I'm not saying he is going to score goals for fun and transform us back into challengers. I do, however, believe his influence in the top half of the pitch will bring us some much needed direction. I believe he does for our attacks what JT does for our defense. He's the glue. Before we even talk about getting back into rhythm or form, I believe that has to come back first - a unity. I've said it before, we're playing desperation football. We can't be doing that. We need to get back to the basics. Players need to be disciplined. And I hope Grant is not preaching otherwise. We're a team that has lost its way in more ways than one. I'm not getting the feeling the manager's doing an awful lot, or has the ability, to help us find it. But I don't think he's going anywhere soon and that is what is frustrating me greatly. Cheers, Butch

The only way we are making champions league next year is...
1. Because many squads have been improved upon while we are "going backwards". 2. Because the manager is important; the players cannot just go out and do what they like on the pitch and expect to win - at least, not most of the time. 3. Because Jose's exit has hit the players hard and they are struggling to get back their form/confidence. On paper, I would of course expect us to finish in the top four. I'd also expect us to be challenging for the title, but THAT doesn't look likely does it? The thing is, I believe for us to be back in the "hunt", we're going to need a new manager now. The longer we go with Grant in the hot-seat, the less likely whoever does eventually come in will be able to turn things around quickly enough. The manager is important, you know. Cheers, Butch

our season is over
I think he meant we don't have much prospects as things stand at the moment, Loz. If we're able to turn it around soon-ish, then of course, the season is still long. But just looking at the squad operating without discipline, with players who are clearly rattled and unhappy, and with confidence running lower than it has been for a long while, as we watch the other sides pull further and further clear, does look a bit hopeless don't you think? We need a strong influence. The squad is a good one, but an experienced one. It is not going to give in to a manager who is clearly a step down from Jose and one who indeed may have played a role in his departure (may being the important word here). I really think we need a Capello/Hiddink/Lippi calibre manager and man - someone who will instantly win the respect of the players and get them pulling in the same direction again. I see Makalele's taking of corners yesterday not for what it seemed, a man wanting to do what he felt was best for the team under the circumstances, but for something symptomatic of a squad playing an indisciplined brand of football. Shevchenko is pulling one way, Drogba another, Joey one way and Makalele still another. They are all trying to lead in their own way because they feel the squad lacks leadership (I don't mean in a captaincy kind of a way, but a footballing kind of a way, if that makes sense). A loss, as expected, at Valencia and that would leave us a mountain to climb in the CL, with the EPL already going to be a bit of a tough come back. So, even though the season is obviously not over, looking at our prospects at the moment, it may as well be. I'm not being pessimistic. I am being realistic. And I most definitely hope I am wrong. Cheers, Butch

Grant v Van Basten
Very disturbing the way you put it Moos, but in all seriousness I would hope that the incoming manager would stick to his principles and do what is best. If there is a personality conflict, then so be it. But if the new manager would have to do whatever Roman wanted then we're better to stick with Grant and forget about anymore success. I think ultimately what caused Jose's downfall may have been his lack of diplomacy (+ other things that irked Roman and made him impatient). Really, I cannot see having a "yes-man" manager bringing us any success whatsoever. He'd have to be a heck of a man-manager, as opposed to great tactician or great team builder. And he'd really have to de devoid of any ego whatsoever. Now, tell me how realistic it would be to expect to find someone like that. Cheers, Butch
