Frankly Amazing

Featured Replies

I haven't seen this anywhere else but thought it well worthy of a mention.

Now I know some of you are firm believers that there are lies, damn lies and statistics but which ever way you add this one up it makes a very compelling case.

Taken from The Times last Monday.

The sustained brilliance this season of Frank Lampard – an advanced central midfield player – has reinforced Chelsea’s tendency to probe through the centre. Last month against Manchester City they recorded the highest proportion of attacking time in the central third in a Premier League game this season. Lampard, whose regular position is shown by his touch graphic against West Ham United on Saturday, has created at least 53 more scoring chances than any other player this term.

Most chances created in the league this season:

Lampard 125

Gerrard 72

Arteta 69

Downing 68

I find that quite extraordinary.

if he played for the dippers or manure he would win player of the year every year

the guy is awesome

not to mention he is 1 away from scoring another 20 goals from midfield for the 5th year running

lot of people to point to his attacking and goal scoring, which from midfield is amazing don't get me wrong, but I think what has been most impressive and I say this as someone who has not missed many matches as they are not always shown on the television, is his range of passing has just been astonishing.

i thought it was incredible as well until it was pointed out to me that sfl takes many of out corners and attacking free kicks

that must have a large bearing on this set of stats because arteta is 3rd and he has been out for ages

still impressive though

I must say that is a bit of a numpty comment Sexelk. All the others mentioned also take a lot of the freekicks and corners too. He doesn't have any advantage over anyone else in the league when it comes to creating chances - it's just that he is that much better than everyone else.

It is amazing when you think about it, he hasnt got the strength of a Roy Keane, he doesnt have a 100mph shot in his armoury like Stevie.G, neither has he the flair of an Arteta.

Without a doubt the most UNDERATED player on the planet.

Our best signing this century, doubt we will get better in the next 91 years.

i don't think gerrard takes liverpools stuff

he is still clearly the best but it is a wee bit misleading

and not really a numpty comment, if arteta was fit all season, he'd be right up there because he takes all the corners and free kicks. (everton are better than us from them so lamps still tops arteta)

er, yes he does. gerrard takes a hell of a lot of the dippers free kicks and corners. the same as lampard does. therefore not only does lamps outscore gerrard every season and create more chances from open play, he also has a better set piece than him...

Tbh I cant remember us creating too many chances from corners, and Frank doesnt take hardly any free kicks at all, most of his chances come from the middle of the pitch.

Ronaldo takes all the corners, freekicks, and penalties for Utd and he's nowhere near Lampard

does alonso not take the free kicks and corners?

lamps does float a lot of free kicks in

skinny ron doesn't take the corners, giggs/anderson/nani all do but not ronaldo. he shoots from every free kick even if it's in utd's half so no suprise he doesn't set up any scoring chances. you can't set up many scoring chances from pens unless you cock about like pires and henry and even that didn't work

it's still an impressive stat whatever way you look at it but i'm not getting carried away with it. he is the best and i'm not debating that

but why shouldnt we get carried away with it? im sure if it was gerrard or ronaldo who were top the manc swould be happy and shouting it from the rooftops. thats our problem at times, when we have someone brilliant or we do something outstanding we almost seem shy in celebrating it. sod it, lampard is miles ahead of anyone els with chances created so we should rightly laud him and celebrate it.

Set peices are the weakest part of Franks game.

As I said, he hasnt really got an attribute, hes just a great football player, with a great football brain, and if you believe in stats, he'll back you up all the way with his.

There is a reason he takes freekicks and corners. Just because someone takes a freekick or corner doesn't mean that he is automatically creating a scoring chance. There is a difference. Equally, the fact that he is playing and not injured is another of his great attributes. He doesn't miss loads of games through either suspension of injury.

The point here is that Lampard is way, way out in front in a fairly important element of the game - not just a little bit, but a huge amount.

I can't really see why any Chelsea fan would want to seek to diminish that in any way. I'd expect it from a Liverpool fan but not from one of our own.

that's true, if it was gerrard he'd be the greatest footballer of all time, regardless of what qualifications the stats come with

i'm not trying to diminish it, i’m just being realistic about it. if you tried to present that stat as evidence for lampard being the best outside a chelsea forum then you would get shot down.

look at it this way, if it was gerrard who was miles ahead and took all liverpools corners and free kicks, and lamps took none of ours, you would be knocking scouse fans for arguing it

i would be anyway

You are diminishing it. You are saying that because he takes corners and freekicks the stats do not mean all that much.

I think you are wrong. The number of corners or freekicks he takes is irrelevant. It's like saying that he has the ball more so he has more opportunity to do something with it. Opportunity is one thing, actually doing something with it is another altogether.

How many corners has Gerrard taken this season? How many Corners has he taken? how many goalscoring chances has he created from them? Now the same for Frank. How many? and how many chances?

You haven't got a clue what the answer is have you? I certainly don't.

can't say i do but i'm pretty sure gerrard doesn't take corners so it couldn't be many

would be interesting to see a breakdown to chances created in open play/set pieces etc

just trying to be objective here

just trying to be objective here

Fact: The Sainted Starfish is a vastly over-rated, diving, cheating, lying, hypocritical, over-hyped, dirty bar steward of a whiny Scouse git.

That's as objective as you need to be.
