July 31, 200915 yr Farewell to one of our own - I guess enough time has passed for us to forgive for almost bankrupting us with those stadium developments!! That was mostly Sexton's fault anyway. Love him or hate him, Brian Mears was Chelsea through and through. RIP
July 31, 200915 yr Didn't realise that he had passed away. RIP. one of a Chelsea family dynasty. His running of the club was not the best but to be fair there was no one more distraught about it than him, he loved the club.
July 31, 200915 yr Author That was mostly Sexton's fault anyway. Love him or hate him, Brian Mears was Chelsea through and through. RIP and he looked bloody brilliant. how could you not like this guy
July 31, 200915 yr I can only echo the above, it's sad when you lose one of your own, and to lose Bobby Robson too makes the loss even more sorrowful.
July 31, 200915 yr Sad day all round - just not like it used to be and the passing of these two just emphasises that
August 12, 200915 yr Couple of obituaries here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries...rian-Mears.html http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/o...icle6789191.ece Interesting reading - puts some of our more recent worries in perspective. Sad to read that Brian Mears never set foot inside Stamford Bridge after selling up. RIP Mr Mears
August 12, 200915 yr I missed this the first time around, RIP Mr. Mears. Thanks for posting those, flasher. Very good read and its sad to realize his passing wasnt as widely recognized as it should have been. Especially considering the importance he had to the club. According to wikipedia, he later became friends with both Matthew Harding and Brucie Buck
August 12, 200915 yr RIP Brian. Out of interest, does anyone know whether he sold his shares in Stamford Bridge to Marler? I know his brother and Lord Chelsea did, but he seems to have been a proper Chelsea fan who genuinely loved the club. If he did, it's unforgivable.
August 12, 200915 yr RIP Brian.Out of interest, does anyone know whether he sold his shares in Stamford Bridge to Marler? I know his brother and Lord Chelsea did, but he seems to have been a proper Chelsea fan who genuinely loved the club. If he did, it's unforgivable. I don't think he did. There's no mention of him doing so on this History of Chelsea FC page, for instance: In 1981 Brian Mears resigned as chairman, ending his family's 76-year association with the club. One of Mears' last actions was to appoint former Wrexham boss John Neal as manager. A year later, Chelsea Football & Athletic Company, heavily in debt and unable to pay its players, was, at the nadir of its fortunes, acquired from the Mears family interests by businessman and one-time chairman of Oldham Athletic, Ken Bates, for the princely sum of £1, though he declined to buy the stadium and its substantially larger debts, a move he was later to regret. Bates proved to be a real fighter as the new chairman, although his opponents included supporters (who did not take kindly to his suggestion of electrified fences to keep them off the pitch) as well as property developers Marler Estates, to whom David Mears, brother of Brian, had sold his share of the Stamford Bridge freehold instead. In every reference I've found, the villains of the piece appear to be David Mears and Lord Chelsea. Apart from what looks like an ill-informed comment at CFCnet I'm not going to post it here. If you want to read the comment in question, it's the one by Rod Crowley.

From what I know of him, Mears doesn't strike me as someone who would sell out the club like that. According to those articles above and some of the posts on cfcnet, it seems it was his estranged wife who sold his portion of the shares, Wikipedia also says similar: According to Bates, he and David Mears, the majority shareholder of SB Properties, shook hands on a deal which would see Chelsea acquire Mears' stake in SB Properties for £450,000.[34] However, Bates later discovered that Mears was also in discussions with Crystal Palace owner Ron Noades, with a view to moving Chelsea away from Stamford Bridge and have them ground share with Palace at Selhurst Park.[35] Mears and Lord Chelsea subsequently sold their shares in SB Properties to property developers Marler Estates, giving Marler a 70% stake.[34]
