April 8, 201016 yr Pan's Labyrinth is on channel 4 later tonight. If you haven't seen that I strongly recommend you tune in after watching highlights of today's game on MOTD I watched Pans L - and still dont know what to make of it - it was like a Tarantino does Fairy Tale. Gripping stuff though, kept my attention but as I said, left me bewildered
April 9, 201016 yr There, fixed that for ya You're talking about this guy, right YB? You could have fixed my misspelling too, while you were busy spreading fertilizer. Edited April 9, 201016 yr by ThunderDan
April 9, 201016 yr I watched Pans L - and still dont know what to make of it - it was like a Tarantino does Fairy Tale. Gripping stuff though, kept my attention but as I said, left me bewildered Fabulous film. The first and currently only foreign film to ever keep me gripped all the way through. Watched plenty on the plane home from America, the stand out being "The Lovely Bones", the latest Peter Jackson film. Admittedly, it's not in the same league as LOTR or King Kong, but I thought it was a really great film. Kept me hooked all the way through, it was visually stunning, and the young girl was brilliant in it.
April 9, 201016 yr just watched law abiding citizen with gerard butler and jamie fox... what a good film.. 9/10
April 10, 201016 yr Watched 'The white ribbon' a couple of days back. I loved the film personally but the two mates I was watching it with were quite underwhelmed with the blunt ending and the unconventional climax.

I want to see it not only because Jackson made it (I love his films), but the cast seem great as well (though Wahlberg isn't one of my favourites). The girl who plays the main character is Saoirse Ronan and she really is a great young actress. I first saw her in "Atonement" in which she was brilliant (was nominated for an Oscar even). Also think Stanley Tucci is an underrated actor.
April 10, 201016 yr I want to see The Lovely Bones, but haven't found the time to do it yet. It's been in the theaters for about a month, but there have been other more interesting movies that I've seen instead. I've yet to see Burton's Alice in Wonderland as well, but that has dropped down on my "to see" list after hearing so many comments from my friends about it being quite a mediocre(though visually impressive) movie. It's probably a movie that needs to be seen in 3D, so I might go see it at the theater a few blocks away from where I live. It's not the best theater there is, but it's near. None of my friends have seen Lovely Bones, but the reviews have been generally favorable(mostly 4/5 stars), all apart from Roger Ebert's review. It's rare to see him write such a negative review, so now I want to see it for myself. I went to see Fantastic Mr. Fox the other day and it was pretty good. I didn't like the trailer, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's probably my least favorite Wes Anderson movie, but then again, I've liked them all. I haven't seen Bottle Rocket, though. There's just something about Wes Anderson's style that appeals to me. I really wanted to see Man on Wire on a big screen, but I missed it when it was shown here and it was on the telly the other day, so I watched it. I quite liked it, although it wasn't quite what I expected.

I didn't enjoy that. Of what I'd heard, it was a sort of kids film made for adults, and me being in the sort of transitional period between the two, I thought it would quite appeal to me, but I just didn't get it. The animation takes a lot to get used to, and some of the jokes were just odd. Like an existentalist joke? Where did that come from? How many 7 year olds would understand that, seriously?

In many good movies you will have the kids and adults often laughing at different things. I'm not sure if it's meant to be a kids movie, though. It's basically Anderson dealing with his favorite subject(dysfunctional families and especially father son relationships), but this time he's just decided to make it a stop animation movie. I didn't like the animation style when I first saw the trailer, but for some reason I really liked it when I saw the full movie on a big screen.
April 10, 201016 yr On that Lovely Bones review, I disagree with him totally, he just sounds like a sceptic who's got it in for Peter Jackson. Yep, I just checked out his reviews of the LOTRs, and it seems odd to me that all 3 get 4 or 5 star reviews across the board, but this guy gives Fellowship 3, Two Towers 3 and Return of the King 3.5? From the Ebert review: ""The Lovely Bones" is a deplorable film with this message: If you're a 14-year-old girl who has been brutally raped and murdered by a serial killer, you have a lot to look forward to. You can get together in heaven with the other teenage victims of the same killer, and gaze down in benevolence upon your family members as they mourn you and realize what a wonderful person you were. Sure, you miss your friends, but your fellow fatalities come dancing to greet you in a meadow of wildflowers, and how cool is that?" That's not the message at all, he's literally taken the plot and made it a message. Apologies if this is a SPOILER, but Ebert claims that Susie's murder eventually made her happy, but she's not happy that she was murdered at the end at all, she's just happy she can now move on in the knowledge that her parents will be happier after suffering for so many months, they will forever mourn her loss, obviously, but they'll be able to rest happier knowing that (slightly cheesy) she's finally in a better place. And, how could he say that Saoirse Ronan's narration is "creepy"? I thought it worked brilliantly. It gave a certain contrast to the very dark storyline, her voice was very calm and, ironically, quite heavenly in comparison to Tucci's geuinely creepy character. Where he got this creepy idea from, I have no idea. What would he rather, one of those super deep voices you get narrating horror movie trailers? Sorry to anyone who rates Ebert as a reviewer, I disagree with him totally on that one. As you can probably tell, I'm an avid film reviewer myself. Edited April 10, 201016 yr by Ruh Buh Juh
April 10, 201016 yr Sorry to anyone who rates Ebert as a reviewer, I disagree with him totally on that one. I find myself often agreeing with him, but I've strongly disagreed with him on a few occasions as well(The Cell being one of those movies). I don't always agree with him, but his reviews are usually interesting reading. I don't read his reviews because I want to read reviews by someone who thinks like me, but because I like to read reviews that make me think. There's one Finnish reviewer who is like that as well. He can be a bit harsh and controversial at times and I don't always agree with him, but I've got a pretty good picture of what sort of movies he likes, so in some cases(certain genres) if he hasn't liked the movie, it can actually be a recommendation to me(depends on why he didn't like though) and with certain genres I know I probably won't like the movie no matter how much this reviewer likes it. Both of these reviewers usually have something to say, instead of just filling space with text like some reviewers. As I haven't seen the movie yet, I can't say whether Ebert was wrong about this. April 15, 201016 yr I watched the Big Lebowski with my friends last night. An absolute gem of a film.
April 16, 201016 yr Clash of the Titans. Same feeling as Moos on this one. Badly made film and a complete disappointment. Dialogues like 'Don't look that bitch in the eye' and 'This is a good quality item' made you wonder whether it was mythological drama or a B-grade action flick.
April 18, 201016 yr Julie and Julia Meryl Streep is a legend of the screen so funny in a great role, bit of a chick flick with the missus but still good film

"Don't look that bitch in the eye" in a film supposed to be set 1000s of years ago? Oh my word.
April 18, 201016 yr ...made you wonder whether it was mythological drama or a B-grade action flick. Maybe it's meant to be a B-grade mythological action flick. ;)

Dialogues like 'Don't look that bitch in the eye' and 'This is a good quality item' made you wonder whether it was mythological drama or a B-grade action flick. Just saw Clash of the Titans. Decent action movie, but a real disappointment as a whole. I agree with Rahul. Dialogues like "Don't look that bitch in the eye" is really laughable. I was hoping for an exciting movie with both action and truthful story. Atleast I got the action. Once again Hollywood manage to ruin a possibly good movie with a stupid script and a fetish for special effects. Would it hurt so much to make a real depiction of the greek mythology? After all, it's full of interesting stories that can be made into quite fascinating movies. I miss the old movies, like "Jason and the Argonauts". The effects might be crap (compared to todays level), but the rest is great.
April 19, 201016 yr I miss the old movies, like "Jason and the Argonauts". The effects might be crap (compared to todays level), but the rest is great. Funny you should mention "Jason and the Argonauts". The original "Clash of the Titans" had Ray Harryhausen in charge of creating the special effects. :D
