Lofty's Wall of Sound - What are you listening to?

I like that song To The Mountains, MHL. Good stuff, that.

Also, the new 30 Seconds to Mars song is quality (Kings & Queens) off their new album This Is War. It's very Muse-like, so Muse fans should give it a listen.

The missus likes Muse, I don't, but thought 30 seconds to Mars was a good song.

Good choice, sir! Lateralus is among my favourite songs.

Saw Tool at Roskilde a couple of years ago, just spectacular :JC_doubleup:

My favorite Tool songs are Lateralus, Opiate, Sinkfist, The Pot and the solo part in Jambi.

Actually there's only Tool songs I really really love, and Tool songs I love.

Also listen to A Perfect Circle.

How do you define Eurotechno? I've always thought Eurotechno is bands like 2-Unlimited, Aqua, Ace of Bass, Scooter and all of that Eurovision style crap. Compared to them Daft Punk seems almost like Kraftwerk to me. :JC_doubleup:

The worst thing I've heard in ages is "Donk", or whatever they call it. I remember seeing a programme about the music scene on VBS.tv

Oh wait, this one has to be one of the worst things I've EVER heard:

If you haven't already heard it, you might not want to press play on that video(it's THAT bad). YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

I listened to the whole thing (I win whatever prize is it is), and I seem to remember seeing it on MTV Dance or something at some point not long ago... Put a donk on it, is as you say, awful. Not sure if it's possible to find anything worse, but I don't think I want to try.

Discovery is a brilliant album, but then again Daft Punk are just brilliant all over.

Anyway, I spent last night listening to Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis and am now about to listen to Moon Safari by Air... mainly because they're good as background music while I do some reading.

I'm currently converting some of my old cassettes to mp3, so my listening has been somewhat restricted to the albums I've been doing. Most recent albums converted...

Bad Manners - "Return Of The Ugly"

Bad Manners - "Ska'n'B"

Now you're talking! Always had a soft spot for Buster and the boys.

I agree with you on The Pot. What a tune.

I'm not the biggest fan of A Perfect Circle, however. They're not bad by any means, but I don't feel they're as good as Tool, and I can never forgive them for their awful cover of When the Levee Breaks.

Shine on You Crazy Diamond is nothing short of a masterpiece and I mean across all the art forms. As a tribute song it is unparalleled, not just for the general quality of the song but for the lyrics - anyone who knows even a little bit about Syd Barrett must recognise how heart breaking a song it is and, for me, Roger Waters' lyrics and the combined efforts of the four Floyd members for the music have combined to create something that touches on perfection.

I was going to bore you all to tears by banging on about the lyrics and what I think of them but that is rather pointless as all that matters is what you think of them yourself.

If you don't know anything about Barrett then they probably won't stand out as much as they would to someone who does - worth googling him and reading that first.

Remember when you were young

You shone like the sun

Shine on you crazy diamond

Now there's a look in your eyes

Like black holes in the sky

Shine on you crazy diamond

You were caught in the crossfire

Of childhood and stardom

Blown on the steel breeze

Come on you target for faraway laughter

Come on you stranger

You legend

You martyr

And shine

You reached for the secret too soon

You cried for the moon

Shine on you crazy diamond

Threatened by shadows at night

And exposed in the light

Shine on you crazy diamond

Well, you wore out your welcome

With random precision

Rode on the steel breeze

Come on you raver

You seer of visions

Come on you painter

You piper

You prisoner

And shine

Nobody knows where you are

How near or how far

Shine on you crazy diamond

Pile on many more years

And I'll be joining you there

Shine on you crazy diamond

And we'll bask in the shadow

Of yesterday's triumph

Sail on the steel breeze

Come on you boy child

You winner and loser

Come on you miner for truth and delusion

And shine

Didn't like When The Levee Breaks either. Some of the Perfect Circle stuff is quality while some songs I don't like.

But then again it's hard to top Tool, for me anyway. Keenan always has his other projects, but they're never even close to the pure quality of Tool.

Saw Tool at Roskilde a couple of years ago and it was just an amazing experience.

The live version reminds me of watching them live in '94 in Oslo. I was just 15 at the time but my cousin, who is a lot older than me and a Floyd-aholic since birth, wanted me to have a experience of a lifetime. I wasn't really into Pink Floyd at the time, had only heard "Another Brick In The Wall" on the radio a couple of times, but boy was I in for a real treat. I think it was an August night and although it wasn't dark when they started playing, I was so amazed by the lazerworks, the big screen and all the lights. My cousin cried a couple of times during the concert and I have to admit I did too. I remember I sat there and did not want it to end. I would've given a lot to relive those moments and I am very sad that I'll never again will get to see Floyd live.

Strange thing though, I didn't to really fall in love with Pink Floyd until my early twenties, despite of having been blown away by the concert. I was too much into football, Chelsea and Iron Maiden in my youth. And shame to admit, I didn't discover "The Dark Side of The Moon" until at the age of 25. But then again now I never get tired of listening to Pink Floyd and never will :o

That was The Division Bell tour which was the same one I saw except I saw them in Toronto. You would probably have seen them a month or so after I did as they did the US/Canada gigs first then moved on to Europe with it finishing with that mammoth run at Earls Court.

Changed my life that concert.

My cousin also wanted to go and see them in Earls Court but didn't get tickets.

Every now and then I play the PULSE DVD and just sit back and enjoy with a pint.

Loz, I'm very jealous. I found a spectacular bootleg from that tour, but obviously it's not the same as it would have been to be there.

I nearly didn't get to go to it. I had gone to Toronto for the summer to work and had been a promised a job before I got there. When I got there that didn't materialise and I was left in something of a fix as I didn't have much spare cash as I had expected to be earning form the start. It took me just over three weeks to get some bar work and it was in that 3 week period that the concert was on. I was offered a ticket by a tout for about $200 CAN and the sensible part of me said 'Don't be stupid - you have rent to pay and food to buy' The Loz side of me said 'It's Floyd'

I spent the next week bloody starving.

I've been luxuriating in the wonders of the Citizen Steely Dan box set ever since it arrived. Those old classics sound so much better than they ever did on vinyl or cassette. In my introduction I stated Deacon Blue to be my favourite song? Well it was at the time, but my favourite changes by the week, even by the day.. and today's is Bad Sneakers:

Yes, I'm going insane

And I'm laughing at the frozen rain

And I'm so alone

Honey, when they gonna send me home?

Bad sneakers and a piña colada, my friend

Stomping on the avenue by Radio City with a

Transistor and a large sum of money to spend

How can you not love lyrics like that?!

I've been listening a bit to an album/a group called Broken Bells. Their debut album is leaked on the internet, and consists of this singer and a producer called Danger Mouse, who is the producer in Gnarls Barkley (well known for their song Crazy). I like it.

Listen to their single The High road. Just great.

Edit: How do you get the youtube-box in the post?

I'm listening to some strange South African band who would probably best be described as ska, (apparently they describe themselves as 'monki punk') although the lead singer is incredibly flamboyant. Their name is Boo!, and my family and I went to see them at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2004 before they broke up and they were quite incredible. I hadn't heard them in a long time and dug out the CDs for the first time in years today for a trip back to six years ago.

I would understand why someone might not like them, however. They're really quite odd:

Being that the ACN is on right now I'll recommend a fine compilation on a label called Soundway:

Nigeria Disco Funk Special: The Sound Of The Underground Lagos Dance Floor 1974-79

http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/307403-01.htm

If you like that kind of sound there is a great crew based in London called Sofrito Sounds who put out re-edits of obscure old Afrobeat tracks and throw the odd party too:

http://sofrito.co.uk/

Finally I should also give a mention to my one of my favourite groups Fat Freddy's Drop who have an excellent new album out called dr. boondigga & the big bw. Here is a link to the video for one of the tracks:

Fans of Reggae, Soul and Funk should give it a listen.

Catch them live if you have a chance.
