Andreas Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Messi gets the biggest price obviously but the team of the year this year was really shocking, not that I bother that much because it was mainly based on the WC but still, shocking. Casillas Maicon - Pique - Lucio - Puyol Xavi - Sneijder - Iniesta C. Ronaldo - Villa - Messi Not a single player from Premiership and I could easily remove Puyol and put Cole there.
PloKoon13 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 To be perfectly honest the Premiership has hardly been particularly exceptional in terms of individual talent this year. Other than the inclusion of Cesar, Cole and Drogba, I don't have a huge problem with that team.
Spiller86 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 (edited) Do we really care? The whole fact they decided to play Puyol at left back says it all. Not even when Germany with Lahm were brilliant at the WC and Bayern also nearly won a treble. I honestly wonder why anyone really bothers being a part of FIFA anymore. They really are a joke. Of and of course in other news today a German from the FIFA ethics committee resigned because, and wait for it: 'He didn't believe FIFA were serious about tackling corruption.' Says it all. Alex Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 To be perfectly honest the only change i would make would be cole to left back. I would have drogs on the bench i think, despite his scoring last year as i think villa was outstanding at the world cup. But as already said who really cares about these teams of the year whether their international or domestic ones i couldnt care less about them to be honest
mad_mac Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 If it's based on the WC, can't say it's no suprise any prem player was overlooked
The Moos Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Can't say I'm too surprised over that team. Most players seem to be good picks. The only two I would replace are Casillas and Puyol. Cesar helped Inter to three or four titles. That should really be enough to get into the team. Quite frankly, last season he was the best in the world. Puyol didn't do much last season apart for playing for Spain who won the gold (with a little help from the refs). Can't recall him being perticularly good either. And at LB? Really? Lahm or Cole would have been much better picks. Feels like they realised they only had 5 players from the spanish team who won the gold in the World Cup and therefore had to squeze another one in somewhere so that Spain had the majority of the players in that team. But I must say that one really can't take this years awards and "best team" seriously because of the World Cup. A player can be outstanding all season but then have a bad World Cup (possibly because of being in a bad team) and because of that lose any hopes for becoming "best player". Really ridiculous. And giving the award to Messi? Please, that's just wrong. His last season wasn't brilliant in any way and he wasn't that good in the WC, though most of the blame for that was down to that moron Maradona. Sneijder was amazing and really deserved the award. But shockingly he wasn't even in the top three. When his chances were gone I really thought Iniesta or Xavi would get it. Not only because they're really good and had good season, but also because many might feel it was time for one of them to win it. I think Blatter rigged the voting so that Messi won it. I'm getting more and more convinced that he's having wet dreams about Messi. He's probably home this very minute, re-watching the award ceremony and w**king off.

Messi, 23, scored an astonishing 60 goals for club and country in 2010
ethicalstrategy Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 The FIFA Ballon D'Or is an amalgam of the FIFA World Player of the Year Award - voted by managers and captains of International teams - and the France Football Ballon D'Or - voted by journalists. Apparently, if it had been awarded separately as before then Messi would have won the World Player of the Year and Sneijder would have won the Ballon D'Or. I wouldn't argue with either of those. As for the team, I'd take issue with the goalkeeper and the left back. Other than that it looks pretty reasonable.

Well, if thats the case, I wonder how someone could be a predicted winner for one former award, and yet not even make the top 3 of the combined running. Seriously, my only issue was with Sneijder not being there. When you come back from a bad career move, win a domestic treble, lead your team to the world cup final, and in the process become the offensive heartbeat for one of the best club teams in the world, I would think you have done enough to at least get the recognition, if not win the damn thing. And if Messi is the obvious winner becuase of his individual brilliance, why was Ronaldo not there, the same player who basically kept pace with him in scoring all year, but did so in fewer games? But in the end I wasnt really bothered when I saw the news. My reaction was literally "oh" because sometimes these things are so predictable. As far as the team, I have learned to not care about these random selections long ago, and especially so when they originate from FIFA or UEFA. Edited January 11, 2011 by TheWestwayWonder
PorkpieBlue Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 It's all big-you-up back slapping. Don't mean a thing. Pants.

Just to further emphasise how much, Asian Cup games in Qatar, (you know the place where we have to move the WC to January to accommodate them) have been half full at best. Great fans, great weather. Where better to hold a WC. Edited January 13, 2011 by Spiller86
The Moos Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 This is just getting more and more ridiculous. First alot of the people voting says that they got Xabi Alonso and Xavi mixed up and now there are some who didn't get their votes counted (Denmark gave votes to Xavi and none to Messi which wasn't counted). This is just f*cked up.
The Brit Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 messi is obviously a great talent, but my vote would have gone to sneijder (treble winner and almost took Holland to world cup final singlehandedly), or one of Xavi and Iniesta - big world cup as well as playing great for barca...on the biggest stage messi did fcuk all
disillusion Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 http://www.sport.es/pdfs/balonoro_jugadores.pdf All the votes! Some joke votes obviously. Especially from the smaller countries. But special mention goes to Vermaelen. Seems to me that the injury he is currently suffering is more of a mental one :D
