March 3, 201214 yr That was a good turnout from Plymouth, Cardiff was about the only other decent support numbers wise that season from memory It was pretty good, not the whole end but a D shaped mob at the back of two pens, no fences in those days. The graffiti was done on a Friday night by one of their fans who lived in Fulham. What was notable was how few they brought the next season. Forest's turnout was very good too right at the start of the season and a very violent affair thoughout and afterwards as they came out into Fulham Road.
March 3, 201214 yr I remember that plymouth game and yes in was a good turnout,no where near the whole end though, also remember them ending up on parsons green and getting legged everywhere. But fair play to them because as you say not many brought fans done to the bridge in those days.

Got my years wrong, I was thinking about 76/7 when it was the year before, is that right?
March 3, 201214 yr Got my years wrong, I was thinking about 76/7 when it was the year before, is that right? November 1st 1975 was the first game, we were 2-0 up. Paul Mariner scored for them maybe both goals in a 2-2 draw. We played them away later that season and our displays of violence must have scared them as next season there was a very small scattered turnout although it did kick off for a few moments. March 3, 201214 yr Aaah back to the past and away from the mess that is our current team. . Yep, back to the good old days when a win was something to look forward too, not expected. Hold on, that's the same as now?
March 4, 201214 yr A win something we looked forward to? What about an away goal in 80-81 after Notts County in November? It became the bridge too far that season... As for Marina scoring both, well done. Date: Saturday, 1st November 1975 Competition: Football League Division 2 Position 14 Venue: Stamford Bridge Attendance: 20,096 Referee: Derek W Civil (Birmingham) Chelsea 1 Peter Bonetti, 2 Gary Locke, 3 Ron Harris, 4 Garry Stanley, 5 Micky Droy, 6 John Dempsey, 7 Ian Britton, 8 Ray Wilkins, 9 Teddy Maybank, 10 Ian Hutchinson, 11 Bill Garner Scorers Britton 4, Wilkins 58 Manager Eddie McCreadie Plymouth Argyle Aleksic, Darke, Burrows, Green, Rioch, Delve, Randall, Johnson, Mariner, Rafferty, McAuley Scorers Mariner 70, Mariner 75 Manager Tony Waiters As for our number 9 that day, Teddy Maybank, does anyone else remember him being the bloke (out of three) that was picked by the lass on the very first episode of "Blind Date" hosted by Cilla Black?
March 4, 201214 yr Wasn't aware of Teddy's Blind Date fame, but he was one of very few Chelsea players who came from my part of the world along with Colin Pates, Mickey Fillery and Alex Stepney. One who never quite made it with us but went on to become a bit of a Millwall legend was Les Briley and from a little bit further out Graeme Stuart and Jason Cundy.
March 4, 201214 yr As for our number 9 that day, Teddy Maybank, does anyone else remember him being the bloke (out of three) that was picked by the lass on the very first episode of "Blind Date" hosted by Cilla Black? Teddy Maybank went on to play for Fulham. One evening game a few of us were down the cottage (I lived in Fulham) and were giving him a bit of clog by the main gates, nothing nasty just the Chelsea reject sort of thing and he turned round to the head gateman and told him to give us tickets.

I have a clip of that Blind Date. I will put it on if I find it Ted was also on the Weakest Link

March 4, 201214 yr A few of the Chelsea boys drank in the Morden Tavern too, probably went over there after training in Mitcham.

I know the Mint but Carshalton and Morden were more my stomping grounds, St Helier Arms, Morden Tavern and the Crown in Morden.

Don't know if you're aware of it Steve but the Tavern is about to re-open as a co-operative, community pub after it was saved from demolition that would have seen a block of flats being built. I'll give it a look next time I'm down home.
March 4, 201214 yr I just heard AVB has collected his P45 He looked a beaten man yesterday after the game, soon as he lost the players it seemed inevitable. Is it too late to send Jose a Valentine?

I used to go in the Tavern (and the Arms) quite a bit in the early to mid-70's, knew quite a few of the Morden boys - glad it's not being pulled down

March 4, 201214 yr Chelsea young skins at QPR 69/70 The sheepskin sparked this memory... as a 15yr old, I used to work on a Saturday for Barry Bridges. One afternoon in mid summer, four Chels players dropped in for a drink (not the first of the day) one of whom was David Webb who had a spanking sheepskin coat over a Tshirt. Noticing I'd taken a shine to his coat, Webby offered to sell it -- a wonderful gesture -- but it was in the middle of a heatwave!!! They all sat round a table and kept me busy all afternoon bringing more bottles. I left at 6pm and they were all singing their heads off... unforgettable Edited March 4, 201214 yr by fishCFC
