Shatner's Bassoon
A packed Shed. Over 30,000 there that day. The gate for the corresponding game the previous season was 7,

alan'82
Great pictures, thanks for posting them chaps!. Luckily,I was at that game vs.Derby who, if I remember, were one of the fancied sides to gain promotion. They had Archie Gemmel & John Robertson in their squads if the old brain cells recall correctly & we were just making the numbers up. Who was this guy called Kerry Dixon?,well we soon found out didn't we (as did Derby) plus of course the likes of Pat,Eddie, joe & Spackers made their debuts. Rather oddly, another memory of that day occured on the train as it made it's way to Fulham Broadway. This bloke was leaning against the carriage doors with the new yellow (le coq sportif) away shirt on reading the match day programme. He was in truth a bit of a chubster but what a shirt! & isn't that programme bigger than last seasons?. I brought one of those shirts (still got it),& in true 'what goes around comes around' fashion,I now look like a fat bast*rd if I try to wear it!. It's bloody weird what crap sticks in the memory. strider6004

How anyone can prefer new moden ground designs over grounds like whl in the picture is beyond me, give me an old style ground any day of the week. Agreed, many of the new grounds are like 'kit football stadiums'. Trying to explain what a 'heaving packed swaying singing terracing' is like to my 2 sons is difficult. They have been brought up in all seated staiums. Safety always must come first, but I'm glad I experienced the packed terracings.

Yeah same here mate, i've tried telling my boy but he just doesnt get it, sad thing is its getting to the stage now where i've sat down just as much as i used to stand on the terraces :-( I'd love to get someone like Peterborough away where(for now) they still have an away terrace, just to experience it one more time. shedhead
Carshalton. For the old fashioned terrace experience you just need to take a visit to a club which is a couple of divisions down. Depending on where you are I am sure it would be worth it for the young lad's sake if not yours. Lots of standing at away games.

In Scotland you can still stand in Division 1 Grounds. Was never 'officially' in a 100,000 crowd. However I was as at a game, the 1976 Scottish Cup Final, where my old man reckoned there were 105,000 ish in, as a gate was broken down and supporters got in free and uncounted. He'd been to many Scotland v England 100,000 games.

Yeah true mate, my local non league side(Carshalton Ath) have a terrace along the whole side of the pitch sadly though we average about 200 every home game so the terrace is sparse, try a surge on there & you'll end up crashing in to the fencing at the front lol! I'm taking my boy to a few aways before the end of the season so hopefully he'll experience standing then.
erskblue
Ski hats were popular in the mid 80's. Surprised none of the lads here have the half Chelsea half Rangers one's I remember those half Chelsea/half Rangers Ski hats.
