January 27, 201214 yr The legendary 4-3 game. 'Take a bow'. What a 3rd and Team Goal ! Great footage, watch them later Cheers mate again
January 27, 201214 yr Strange about the Orient then. My guess is that Mervyn Day was just the guest for some reason. What a pity. I was sure it was filmed. The London teams in action on that day were as follows: 10th November 1979 Div 1 Palace Arsenal 1-0 Spurs Bolton 2-0 Div 2 Fulham West Ham 1-2 Luton Qpr 1-1 Orient 3 Chelsea 7 Shrewsbury Watford 1-0 So maybe its one of the other London teams that featured with Mervyn Day just a guest. Check what you have in your collection. To be honest I can't remember the goals on TV but I distinctly recall the Day 12-12 snub of Chelsea's feat. Footnote for those that don't know. Mervyn Day was a former West Ham keeper who played for Orient when Chelsea scored 7. Hi Garry, yes you got the Cruyff one two with the corner flag spot on, and I respect fully your recollections, always have mate I watched every Match of the Day and The Big Match from a period of 1974 till about 1985-86, where I kind of lost interest. When we changed our badge I kind of fell out of love with football (well not like I was) Funny enough one of the few Big Matches I am missing is Luton v QPR 1979-80 which would have been the same day as the Orient 3 Chelsea 7. So that was the main game, and the supporting games were Southampton v Forest and Everton v Boro. But LWT were not strangers to having players come in the studio, so I will find out more about Mervyn Day and his comments, and if news footage exist of that game........Can anyone who went to the game remember seeing camera's in the Orient gantry?

January 27, 201214 yr Fuuny enough I had not seen this for a while from Talking of "Where were you when you were sh*t?" it doesn't come much worse than this one. Be warned: They beat us 4-1 at the Bridge that season too. I think our manager after the game (or it could have been Ken Bates) said we were lucky to get 0. January 27, 201214 yr This is without doubt the best thread ever. Huge thanks to all the guys taking the trouble to upload and post the footage. Look forward to watching it all when I have time at the weekend. The sheer nostalga & romance of it all. Terracing, atmosphere, aggro, 70's fashion, the hair, the kits. the old familiar names on the advertising hoardings, muddy pitches, sh*t defending and so on and so on........................... Brilliant. Happy Days. You can just smell the Bovril and fried onions mixed in with horse sh*t!
January 27, 201214 yr Author Quality clips there lads, thanks for posting, its nice to see i'm not the only one who loves old footgae & pics. Bit of a different clip but listen to the words, the song has it spot on........
January 27, 201214 yr Author HaHa, you reminded me. Shrewsbury away 1979 15th September. They had just been promoted and us relegated. The previous weekend there had been a bit on football focus about how Shrewsbury were a poor club and they only had 3 match balls. Each time a ball was kicked over the stand into the river seven the groundsman had to get in his rowing boat and row after it. So in the first five minutes 2 balls ended up in our end. Both were passed alone head height to the end of the stand and booted over into the river to great cheers. For ten minutes the 22 players tried not to kick the ball into the crowd. Then Droy stuck a defensive header over our bar. Bang, bobble, bobble, boot. Splash!. The ref looks over to the side. There is an eerie wait and then the groundsman dressed up like a fisherman with a sowester and dirty mac turns up in the tunnel with the first 2 balls. This went on. I think we kicked it over into the river about 15 times before the novelty wore off. All in fun though hey? The other games that stand out for me listening on the radio were the trouble at Bristol Rovers & at West Ham, both games i heard in my dads car, i suppose a normal non event game i'd have nothing to remember hearing about. I'm sure Shrewsbury still employed someone to fetch balls from the nearby river right up until they left Gay Meadow a few years ago. Edited January 27, 201214 yr by Carshalton Blue
January 27, 201214 yr Quite an interesting video here on the East Stand from 1990. The presenter talks a lot of cr@p in a rather camp manner but it is still nice to see the various shots in and around the stand.
January 27, 201214 yr Brilliant stuff Eddie Mac. I don't think I had seen footage from that Bolton game since I attended it. I was one of those who actually stayed to the end. I remember quite a bit of the ground had started to empty when all looked lost with about 15 mins to go. Then after the second goal people started coming back to gather in that area by the East Stand where the cars parked by the pitch. I think you can just catch sight of them in the corner during the last part of the footage. One of the few bright days in an otherwise pretty sad season. That was my first year with a season ticket too ;). I got chucked out of the Shed before half time and we watched what we could from the staircase of the block of flats across the road until the gates opened and we went in the North Stand. Great memories here, Millwall at home and the pre-kick off punch up in front of the Bovril, Fulham on Boxing Day 55,003 actually. I'd loved to have been at the Bolton, Bristol and Plymouth games but was a couple of years too young for long aways although my first was Oxford in 1975/6, 1-1 with Peter Houseman playing for them. Fantastic stuff, please keep them coming. Blackpool away in Div 2 please if possible. Edited January 27, 201214 yr by Peckham Blue
January 27, 201214 yr Peckham Blue. I would have loved for the attendance to have been 55,003 but I could not get out of a Christmas visit to our cousins in Streatham that day. I was 15. I was made to go and told how much my Uncle and Auntie and their three kids wanted to see us all. You can imagine how I felt when the first words my Uncle said when he saw me on their driveway were "Garry young chap, we didn't expect to see you today, why are you not over the Bridge?". So to put things right, it's 55,002. (And not Boxing Day as many believe, but actually on 27th December). I was "kept" at home for the Millwall game, the Notts County was a night match, first of the season and I was kept at home. Over Easter mum thought 3 games in 4 days was too much. I went to Fulham away on Good Friday. Living in Kent I wanted to go to Charlton on the Easter Monday, a lot of my schoolmates supported them. So I was told I was not to go to the Luton at home on Easter Saturday. When I woke in the morning my mum had hidden all my shoes/boots/footware, even my football boots were missing. In protest I went to the local train station in my socks. Then I dediced against turning up at the Bridge in torn socks and bleeding feet so I went home at put LBC on. So I did 17 homes that season. (76-77) The following season 77-78 was my first ever present home. In 78-79 I left school, got a job and didn't miss a match home or away for 5 years before I jacked it in for Sweden. My last ever-present was 82-83 when I saw 93 Chelsea games. We were knocked out of the cups in early rounds. But I did 28 reserve games, junior games, friendlies, etc. The 14 reserve games I missed were played same time as first team games. Having emigrated to Sweden I stayed away. My last game at the Bridge? I stood in the shed, we won 1-0. But we were relegated. Boro in the 88 playoffs. My only Chelsea game since then: When Chelsea came here to Sweden to give me the trophy they never won when I spent more money and time than I could really afford on the Blue Cause. Stuttgart ECWC final 1998 in Stockholm. Also a 1-0 win.

I had the same frustration in 1975 with our match at Fulham, the first time we'd played them for years in a proper match and I had to go to a wedding. I did my first solo London away there in the Anglo-Scottish Cup pre-season and got the admittedly hooligan bug. After the league game our fans rioted (talk about sh*t on your own doorstep) afterwards and even the rose bush got pulled out of the ground in our front garden (I lived off New King's Road). I did most of the London aways that and the next season, Millwall, Charlton, etc but my real time of going was the two years after promotion. The Fulham away Easter game in the promotion season was unbelievable, we must have had 75-80% of a 28,000 crowd, only to lose 3-1.
January 27, 201214 yr Author Quite an interesting video here on the East Stand from 1990. Stuttgart ECWC final 1998 in Stockholm. Also a 1-0 win. One of my all time favourite trips was the ECWC final, Stockholm in 98 with Chelsea, thought it was a great city, locals were spot on, the birds fit as fcuk, even the ob were alright at one point we thought were going to get nicked, all lined up with faces to a wall in a b&b with riot ob stood behind us with their batons they searched us then let us go then shook our hands saying please no fighting. To be fair the ob were spot on they had 100's of stunning ob birds out on the streets there was never going to be any ag with ob after bumping into those. Went out on the tues morning & ended up boozing for 3 days with no sleep was going to crash out in a pals room but never made it out of the bars & clubs, went to some club after our cup final & met a stunning skinhead bird, ended up shagging her in some park at about 6am on a roundabout type thing. 2.45 into the clip you can see a certain poster from here up on the fence, looking misarable but smashed & trying to take it all in & not forget anything.
January 27, 201214 yr To all those who have posted clips/pictures in particular from the mid 60's to late 70's but not forgetting all the other brilliant and not so brilliant years. My heartfelt thank you. Chelsea til I die just like the rest of you. Going off to cry now... :)
January 27, 201214 yr Seb Coe at The Bridge watching us v Sheff Wed 1983/84. Its the first 60 seconds footage of this 1984 Seb Coe documentary. First shown just before 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
January 27, 201214 yr Obsessive Chelsea fanatic? Most home games and away games "I can get to"?? - Yeah we remember this, a few weeks later he joined Fulham's board. Go figure! Best part of this clip: Breda Lee in the first few seconds. Breda was a steward on the trains and lost her son at Preston. (Gary Lee, who we all knew was murdered there in 1981).

Well said mate, as genuine a Chelsea fan as Lovejoy and Mellor are. Stand to be corrected but I think Gary was a Carshalton lad, and don't know if it was the same ladies as on the specials but there was a couple of older lady supporters on the old SC coaches in the mid 70s who performed pretty much the same, surrogate mum to a bunch of idiots, role as Breda and co. My little lot used to be ordered by them to make sure the coach was nice and clean as they got off at the Bridge as we always stayed on till it got back to it's depot in Mitcham,
