So did his lifelong best mate and they both served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. They both played a lot of football during their time in the army ! This happened when an officer was informed they had both played at Junior (Non League) Level in Scotland. My Dad had his call up deferred a year as well so he could he finish his apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner. After leaving the army went back to Scotland for a while and then moved down to London where he met my Mum. My Dad didn't play football for the RE but did box for them. Also swam for the RE and was a champion. My Dad and I guess your Dad would have been in the same boat was old enough to be called up but not old enough to vote. Daft. The voting age wasn't reduced from 21 to 18 until 1970.

March 21, 20206 yr Chelsea fans queuing for the opening game of the 1946/47 season. This was the first league season after World War 2. The game took place on Saturday 31st August 1946 . We beat Bolton 4-3 and the crowd is officially given as 62,850. Tommy Lawton scored two of our goals and Nat Lofthouse scored two of theirs. Both were great centre forwards at their respective peaks.
