all the talk of 433 may mean AVB won't go for that in this match..............last season was competitive and pretty level

so far in the friendlies, yes only friendlies some 'fringe' players have really shown - benahoun & sturridge - so as AVB new and reputations count for nowt, I am going wiv 4213

cech

boss, ivan, jt, ash

ramires & JOM

benahoun

sturridge, torres & malouda

can't wait!

All I want is a line-up that doesnt include Anelka, Kalour or Malouda.

My thoughts exactly, ive become bored of what those 3 do, malouda with his shots from usually around 20 yards that just hit the defenders leg and his average crossing, kalou, well tbh i just cant bare another season of watching him miss half a dozen chances every game and anelka for me just isnt a right winger and with torres drogba and sturridge all fighting for a place up front i just dont see why we would keep him

Have been considering this, with everything we have currently how does this sound:

4-2-3-1

Cech, Ivan, Alex, JT, Cole, Mikel, Lampard, Anelka, Benayoun, Malouda, Drogba.

Stoke are a pretty big team, with plenty of threat from the set piece, so I have gone with as much height as possible. Ivan, Alex, JT, Didier and Mikel are all pretty big guys capable of dealing with their threat from the set piece. Didier's inclusion over Torres owes much to his prowess in that area.

Lampard has been dropped a little deeper, (although Mikel will play deeper still) allowing Benayoun (who has been very impressive in pre-season) further up the park to work in between the lines of Stokes 4-4-2 formation.

Danny is suspended so Anelka starts on the right. Ramires and David Luiz are given time to work back into things, because they haven't had a preseason. They take a place on the bench alongside, Hilario, Josh, Kalou, Torres, and Paulo.

Sound reasonable?

According to the Mirror today Torres will be on the bench for Stoke. Not that hard to believe what with the physical style of Stokes play.

The Mirror also goes on to say how Sturridge will be starting (even though he is suspended!) and how Malouda has impressed AVB in pre-season.

I would not expect to see Luiz or Ramires against stoke myself. Both missed pre-season and Luiz also had a bad game at the Brittania last seaosn, I would expect Ivanovich & JT to be the central defensive partnership, I have a feeling Bosingwa will be at RB.

I would expect that our front 3 will be Malouda, Drogba & Anelka (on the right), don't see what else we can do with Sturridge out unless we put Benayoun in a wider poistion.

Midfield is the harder one to call with no Essien, Ramires maybe not match fit, would not be my ideal game to start Josh either, could see it being Mikel, Lampard & Benayoun...

Totally agree. I think ws6blue's lineup with Benayoun, Boss and Torres might be a bit too lightweight against Stoke. Though I wouldn't mind that team playing the coming game against WBA. I also not sure about how effective Torres would be against Stoke with them parking the bus.

I doubt AVB has chosen the line up to face Stoke yet. We have a pre season trip to Rangers and a whole weeks training to go before the game. What happens if Torres scores a hatrick tomorrow? Does AVB turn round and say 'Oh that's a shame I've already picked the team for next week'.

The Mirror may well be proven right but it would be pure guess work and not some insider knowledge.

Torres our 55m signing starting the season on the bench !! Thats really amusing if I wouldnt be a Chelsea fan

Do you seriously think that with 9 days to go before our first game of the season, AVB knows his starting lineup? Let alone some f**kwit journalist from some rag like Metro.

This is typical of the kind of "Torres to be dropped" report that's floating around:

The Portuguese tactician is desperate to get his Blues reign off to a winning start, and it seems the former Liverpool striker could be sacrificed to ensure that that’s the case.

Torres has scored just one goal since arriving at Stamford Bridge in January and continued his poor form in pre-season, whereas Didier Drogba has excelled as the target man of Villas-Boas’ 4-4-3 formation.

The former Porto boss is now believed to be swaying towards deploying the powerful Ivorian as his main striker in order to counter a physical Potters side, which would leave Torres firmly rooted on the bench.

But while the Spaniard still flatters to deceive, Daniel Sturridge is pushing for a starting spot having impressed the boss on his return from Bolton.

Villas-Boas is thought to prefer the England youngster ahead of Nicolas Anleka or Salomon Kalou on the flanks, and may give him a starting role once he completes his three-match suspension.

Just about the only fact in the entire article is that Daniel Sturridge starts the season with a suspension. The rest is bollocks. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Torres will start, I'm just advising you not to put any faith in the outpourings of that kind of half-baked rag.

I thought Anelka has looked one of our best players in pre-season. He seems to have worked on his ball retention and hasn't been larking about as much. I wouldn't be dissapointed if he started against Stoke, he's probably one of, if not the most natural finisher in our team while Torres is off form.

Ceck

Bosingwa Ivanovic Terry Cole

Mikel

Ramires Malouda

Lampard

Torres Drogba

Benayoun to be introduced if Torres needs help being brought into the game, if that doesn't work then Anelka on for Torres. I'm woeful at team selections, best I leave it to the Pros!
