It's partly due to the constant changing of managers, I know people say Conte was still backed to an extent and I agree. But, surely there had to be better options that who we signed in the summer of 2018 and to an extent with Mourinho in 2015.
The old clique always goes buy when you're at the top of your game not when you're chasing the pack. For some teams like Liverpool the latter strategy has worked but we had elite managers and failed to reinforce title winning teams with further elite players.
I can't be too hard on the board because generally we do well but, it has been including this one 4 seasons since we last competed for the league and 7 since we reaches the semis of the UCL. When we won those titles (14/15 & 16/17) we had good squads but I would argue not truly elite aside from a handful of individuals I place a large emphasis on the coaches and I think by not backing them we set them up to fail.
We backed Lamps it didn't work out but I don't think we are too far off. If Tuchel is as good as a lot of us are starting to think he is, I would place my eggs in his basket for the next 3 years.
To go back to my original point, it is success that fuels further success down the road. I would argue as heartbreaking as it was to lose the ucl 08 to utd it was for the best because we may not have won it in 2012. If we had not been the UCL winners I think there is reason to believe Hazard may not have signed for us. He in his mind wanted to take the next step in his career and thus with all the teams clamouring for his signature he chose the best team in the world.

I think 3rd possibly 2nd depending on other teams performance

Young guys who have just won the league and cup double probably thought it would just be easy again. A short pre season wouldn't have helped either. Hopefully the players and the club have learnt a lesson by this and it won't happen again.

I do get your point how ever Juve and Barca play in a league where they are pretty much going to win the league every year. There isnt the pressure that the Premier league holds.
I do agree with you about giving players a chance since some of our stars arent playing well. It did annoy me that Courtois just walked back into the team after his stupid sending off.
The issue with dropping one of the stars for a youth player is the star is going to be unhappy which causes a bad atmosphere inthe dressing room and say we still dont win then the manager gets stick for playing the youth instead of the stars we have.
I think its natural for really big teams not to bring youth players through very much.

Drogba wasnt happy with us when he first joined. At the end of the first two sesasons I remember him saying he will be considering his options.
Sometimes it just takes people time to settle in a new place. I hope he finds what ever it is he looks for to be happy.

Had to laugh yesterday at a friend of my niece. She went to the player of the year evening and got JT's autograph and had the opportunity to ask him a question - of all the questions she could ask him, she asked "is Diego single".  JT apparently laughed and said he'd never been asked that before!

Why would it matter to Jose when its announced? If the deal is done in terms of fee and wages agreed then surely it wouldnt matter to Jose when the club decide to tell the world.

People on here calling him a tosser etc, why because he played for Arsenal? Ashley Cole played for them before he joined us does that make him a tosser? We all hated Torres before he joined us and no people still back him even though he has done nothing for us since joining.
I think you are silly if you think that a player of his skill and talent wouldnt improve our team. How ever i cant see the board throwing money away on a player that we would have to find a way to fit into our current team.

We could sell Schurrle for close to that, maybe 22mill. Through in selling Salah and we would be ahead. We could recall Moses if we need another body, and he would not be any worse than Salah.
