Lukaku Loan and Press Making a meal of it

Featured Replies

We probably have a thread on it somewhere but a lesser known side effect of single malts is the inability to perform forum searches. Tabloids have twisted this to sound like we've been excluding and stifling the young Belgium's career; failing to mention that a loan move this season was out of the question because of squad registration rules.

Personally, I feel that he should have been given more of an opportunity when Drogba was away; especially with Torres misfiring. He may be a bit raw, but he has given 100% in his cameos so far, and especially tried to get on the end of scoring opportunities.

Romelu Lukaku has demanded answers from Chelsea over his continuing exclusion by Andre Villas-Boas and is ready to join Fulham on loan to safeguard his international future.

Sportsmail can reveal that the 18-year old's agent held talks with Chelsea directors in Paris yesterday to try and formulate a rescue plan for a career that has stalled since an £18million move from Anderlecht last summer.

The meeting followed an ultimatum from Belgium coach Georges Leekens about Lukaku's peripheral role under Villas-Boas and looks certain to lead to a season-long loan for the unhappy front-runner.

Romelu Lukaku: Chelsea striker made a rare appearance against Fulham in the Carling Cup

Bolton and Everton are both keen to give him the first-team football he craves, but Chelsea's apparent preference for keeping him in the capital is sure to alert Fulham and possibly QPR.

Lukaku's agent Christophe Henrotay confirmed the teenage striker's growing unrest under Villas-Boas, and said: 'It is clear that, if Romelu's situation stays the same, we have to search for a solution. Chelsea want to loan him to another Premier League team, preferably one in London, so they can follow his evolution.'

Lukaku opened up on his Chelsea frustration after Leekens took him aside this week and told him to find a new club or risk losing his place in the national side.

Borussia Moenchengladbach and Lazio have expressed an interest in him, but the battle to offer him a fresh start looks like being between Fulham, Bolton, Everton and QPR.

Everton explored the possibility of taking him on loan earlier this season, while Bolton asked about him during negotiations over Gary Cahill's move to Chelsea.

Angst: Lukaku

Bolton boss Owen Coyle believes his relationship with Villas-Boas could count in his favour, though Fulham's interest is backed by their close proximity to Stamford Bridge.

Reflecting on the uncertainty over his future, Lukaku, who went on as a second-half substitute in Belgium's 1-1 draw with Greece in Heraklion on Wednesday, said: 'I will head back to Chelsea with the advice of Leekens in my mind.

'We had a long talk, and his words made me think. He told me I have to play if I want to be selected for the national team in the future. I want to be the number one striker for Belgium, but the problem is, the others are playing for their club sides, while I am not.

'Something has to change. I've progressed as a player since I arrived at Chelsea, because I am training with the best players in the world. But I miss the atmosphere in the stadium and the support of the public.'

Seems like a lot of this is the Belgian coach trying to stir things up. I'm sure Lukaku wants first team football but his statements suggest that he has been pretty patient so far. Leekens on the other hand seems to be demanding first team football for Lukaku and I'm sure he has put plenty of words into his head. A loan would probably be good for Lukaku but I would hope he has more chances at Chelsea next season. His performances in the reserves suggest he is slowly finding his feet.

I guess they are completely ignoring the fact that when he came to the club he stated that he knew he wouldn't pplay first team football, and that he was here to learn from the best.

This boy will leave Chelsea and end up scoring against us in the champions league in the future . He should be given a chance to prove himself for us. He might be the bright new spark we need

Meh.

He knew he wasn't going to come here and play regularly, not with Torres and Drogba and Anelka in front of him. It's short term pain for long term gain with him.

That said I can't help but think that things would have been different for him, had Mata passed for him to tap-in when they made their debuts.

I still think we bought him 12 months ahead of schedule, possibly due to another club (or clubs) being interested.

Makes you wonder if the people in charge have any clue on squad registration rules. We effectively just parked him in the team for a season when we could have loaned him back.
