Remembering joey jones at chelsea

Featured Replies

never forget the boxing day game at home to Fulham when he ran to 3 sides of the ground, pumping up the fans and going mad, just wonderful x

Remember Joey at Easter 1984 we were on the verge of going up and Fulham came to our place. We were 3 up after about 20 minutes and Joey took Paul Parker out at about waist height!! Highest tackle I've ever seen.

Great character and good memories of Joey Jones. But I must admit, when I saw the title on this thread, I feared the worst!!

Great days to be a Chelsea fan. He and Micky Thomas had probably the best connection to our fans in all our history. Yes there are legends like Ossie, Lampard and Drogba to name a few, but these guys understood the passion from the Gate to the Shed to the West to the North Stand boys.

Didn't he get sent off at Carlisle in his first away match...........................and received a standing ovation from our chaps in the seats?

I went to that first game mate, and he was NOT well recieved at all, probably due to his scouse connections. Cant remember if he was sent off tbh.He certainly won us all round in the end just by sheer commitment and the very fact he acknowledged the fans more than any player ive seen. I really think he was at times astounded by our away support.Liverpool had a massive away support at the time but they were in their absolute pomp, so it was understandable. We were on our arse and more than matched them for numbers and passion. TBH i loved our support/fans as much as the team!

"where were we when we were sh*t" fans of 40+ of other clubs must feel a little awkward when this chant goes up because they know excactly where we were, There ground, there pubs and there end!!!! " CHELSEA HERE CHELSEA THERE"

The football wasn't allways good pre 83/84 but us fans were top class. As I have said before in other threads last ten or so years have been great, but there is still something fantastic about Late 70's early 80's following "our" team.

What a season we had back in 1983/84.

My first, hooked ever since used to go a few times before to anfield with an older mate of mine... Joey Jones was a right Hero up there bit of niggle on the pitch or a late tackle etc and the chant would go up "Joeys gonna get you " he would just smile and wave his fist in the air as in Righto boys

job done !

+1, Joey Jones was a great lad.

Managed all home and most away games around then, team were pretty sh1t, but fans were top class.

Don't go to many home games now because of business commitments, but still make the odd away game in Europe, and semis / finals t Wembley...

As the saying goes, " I was there when we were sh*t"

Ive always thought the sprit that the likes of him and Speedo brought to the club was the difference between us staying up and going down in 82/3. Loved the way he pumped up the crowd up nd down the country.
