A signed shirt for Christmas?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My Dad is a true Chelsea fan, has love the team religiously his whole life. Unfortunately he has advanced prostate cancer and without going into too much detail I honestly don't know how much time he has left.

When a loved on is in this situation Christmas presents can be hard to think of, but I did think it would be wonderful if it was possible to get him a signed Chelsea shirt. Something I know he has never had.

If anyone has any tips on how I could go about this, or even just to say that it might be too difficult or not enough notice before Christmas then let me know.

Thanks you in advance for all your help.

Cheers,

Darren

I don't think he's on twitter but he is on Instagram - he's in Dubai at the moment on a break.

When my dad died many years ago, my brother in law suggested trying to get his ashes scattered or buried at the Bridge.  I thought, don't ask, don't get and just rang the general Chelsea number and they said yes.  Now, as I say that was years ago and times have changed but I would still take the attitude of it's worth a try.  So as Zola says, email Pat Nevin and Bruce Buck and JT.  and just ring the general number and email whatever address you can find.

The worst they can do is say no.

Call me cynical by all means, but something about this doesn't quite ring true.

If we assume your father really doesn't have long to live, then you'd have a nice signed shirt to sell on eBay after Christmas.

There are lots of websites that sell signed shirts just be careful as you dont want to be ripped off. The shirts from the Liverpool game will go on auction but im not sure who with.

One thing is for sure, they arent cheap!

Pat Nevin is a good shout, seems to reply to fans.

That's amazing Beerqueen. Where abouts, if you don't mind me asking?

Between the goalposts at the Shed End!  Couldn't have been better reallly!

You're cynical.

That's perfect, especially if that's the stand you watch from. Not far away from Osgood, under the penalty spot.

Ok it's possible that I might have been a little too cynical, basing my previous post on the suggestions to ask for a free signed shirt. Darren himself only actually asks how to go about acquiring one, not where to get one for free.

I would also add that what you did for your father is quiet and dignified. My father wasn't a Chelsea fan, but if he had been I know that's what he would have wanted - trust me I know my father. A signed shirt on the other hand, is to my mind, crass and over-commercialised, something that certain people are willing to pay silly money for, which only adds to my cynicism.

Besides which, it's also very possible that by posting here, Darren was hoping to be offered a signed shirt for free.

If it's free and donated by the club or by a player, how is it over-commercialised? There's no profit involved.

As in highly-saleable. Actually, depending who's shirt you want, they don't have to be too expensive. Take a look on eBay.

Sorry but I'm always sceptical of new members coming here either asking for something for free or with something for sale. This is the Internet after all, and anyone can say anything.

Edit: eBay again, there are plenty of signed, framed photos, Chopper Harris, Roy Bentley and many more, going for reasonable prices. Might be preferable to a signed shirt, depending on Darren's fathe's age. Assuming he's getting on for as old as me, he might well be happier with a signed Chopper Harris print, or a signed 70s squad print, than an Eden Hazard shirt, for instance.

Fair enough being sceptical, I understand that. I do think having a signed shirt isn't crass though, I'd love one.

Fair enough, you'd love one for yourself, but that's not what I was getting at. Anyway, leave it at that. If Darren is genuine then I offer my condolences along with my best wishes.

Hi All,

Thank you for all of your fast replies! Very much appreciated.

Zola - that's absolutely brilliant, from what RichardCFC has said I will try Pat Nevins first and see.

Beerqueen, I'm so sorry to hear you lost your dad a few years ago, but what fantastic thing to do. Really lovely. If I find the right moment I will ask my dad if it's something he would like.

Tweeting JT, not a bad shout.

Big Figure - Thank you for your honesty. I do appreciate that asking about getting a signed shirt can just be a money making scheme/scam, god knows some people do stoop to even these lows. My story is however the truth, and should the time come when my dad passes and if the shirt isn't kept for sentimental value, then I can assure you any money from it's sale would be given to charity. It would only be right.

In regards to a free signed shirt, I'm not sure how it normally works but I'm more than happy to pay the cost of the shirt and delivery etc. That wasn't really the issue.

Thanks again for all your help.
Step two of my pursuit has now begun.

I'll check back here periodically for any more tips.
And if I don't speak to you all again, have a lovely Christmas!

Best,
Darren

Best of luck Darren.

On the topic of signed memorabilia, I'm surprised how cheap hand signed photos are on eBay, going for a few quid. I wonder if they're genuine, but they do look it and the seller has great feedback "handsignedmemorabilia2014".

For me, having something signed is only of any value if I obtained the signatures myself.

I get where you're coming from. Someone offered to sell me an autograph book with several famous cricketers autographs and I didn't want it because I wanted to collect them myself.

But I'd love to own a football or shirt signed by the Chelsea team to keep.

We got my brother a signed Chelsea shirt for his 30th, the shirt was from ebay and was surprisingly cheap, mounting and framing it was much more expensive though!
