We signed Bill Garner in 72, before the skint era, as a long term replacement for 'Ossie'. Obviously not on the same plateau, unfortunately he seemed to be injury prone.
One of his goals which sticks in my memory was at Old Trafford in 76 or 77 (?) when we won 1-0, and i believe that day we were the 1st London club to take an 'army' up there. (Apart from Cup Final replay in 70).

I remember Bill Garner being a bit of a hard man too. I think in the Liverpool cup game (4-2) Emlyn Hughes unwisely tries to square up with him and quickly falls to the ground holding his face ;).

Didn't he play in goal a few times too? I think a couple of games where John Phillips got injured and there were no goalie subs in those days. I want to say one of them was West Ham away 77-78.

I got his autograph one time after he'd been in goal and I seem to remember he squared up to someone in that match who followed through a bit too much - I commented on the incident and he showed me his hand which was all bruised where the player had caught him.  I don't think he had the temperament to be a goalkeeper!  But I liked him.

was at old Trafford that day, escort from the station near the cricket ground, we had thousands up there that day. They had a mob to the left of away end that keep chanting ," where's ya famous one armed man" !!

Can't sing it to forest under that we might get away with it

We can at Millwall (if they get promoted)

Lets just hope its a minor blip even tho when the Arsenal have a pop i remind them who we have managed to beat in the league!
