1st game I was 11 years old in Oct 1981 and watched us lose away to Rotherham 6-0 , I lived in Sheffield at the time and the news was full of how Chelsea were coming and the massive police presence, it was almost like do not go out if you don't need to such was the reputation of Chelsea at the time. Chelsea arrived with no more than 150-200 fans and they were in great voice...from that point I was hooked. The next game I went to was at the bridge the same season ( now in the Chelsea end)  and watched Rotherham spank us again 4-1, I was still hooked.....I think if memory serves this is still a record us conceding ten with one in reply over a season ?

I think you need to watch the video a few times!! We had more than that escorted around the pitch during the game, plus the amount behind the goal.

yeah I was just looking at that, Christ the Grey matter isn't working as well as it should lol

All I can think of was after the final whistle a large group were either kept in or stayed in and that's where my old memory recalls 150-200

Remember back then there were a lot of fans that got in with cash even if it was      "all ticket " and the money went in the turnstile operators pocket! We were in the home end that day and must of had 3,500 plus at the game.

West Ham away 1974, was very young and remember the utter disappointment at seeing that my beloved blues actually playing in RED, on top of that we got mullered 3-0 with Billy Bonds scoring the only hat trick of his career and the few vocal supporters in the Southbank weren't vocal for very long.

It was against Reading away in the FA Cup. God knows when it was, I was a child so sometime in the 90's. We won 2-0 if I remember rightly.

It was a little awkward as me and my Dad was in with the Reading fans. When Chelsea scored, my Dad cheered like mad, completely forgetting where he was!

I’ll give you two intros here:

My first match was QPR away in 1987-1988 season, a friend from work took me after I told him I was unhappy due to unknown health problems causing me stop playing sports. We lost 3-1 yet I was fascinated by the atmosphere. There was a pitch invasion at the end cleared by police horses. I didn’t go the rest of the season I think that was because my first serious relationship started.

The next season Chelsea were down in the old Second Division and I started going to a few more though just home matches. I had moved jobs only to find another Chelsea fan who suggested we could go away to Oxford.

I agreed and then he asked if I could drive. I agreed. Come the day I was eating breakfast and my brother was at a lose end. When I told him I was going to Chelsea he asked if he could come so I agreed. On going to pick up my friends I discovered to my annoyance my work friend’s mates lived thirty minutes drive in the opposite direction.

So we got to Oxford later than I had intended, also due to slow traffic in Oxford. We parked up and went to the away end with a huge queue that wasn’t moving. I suggested we go to the home end and try our luck. All was going well until the police pulled up my brother and ask him who Oxford’s goalkeeper was. He didn’t know.

We went back to the away end and there was still a huge queue.  My friends were saying we should just give up and go home. I was not impressed and let them know that in no uncertain terms. I then noticed a small group of fans standing near a smaller gate a short distance away. As I walked towards it the others slowly followed. I heard this group of about ten fans talking about charging the gate as there were some police there. I looked round to my friends and excitedly beckoned them over. A cheer went up and they surged forwards and we joined them and got in to our amazement. The police just got out of the way.

Once in we discovered the delay, the place was packed and I was in front so had to push through the crowd but even then it was difficult to stand together. There were even people on the roof of the stadium and on the roofs of people’s houses and a police helicopter was overhead. As the pre-match singing started it became clear a number of Chelsea had got in at the home end as a separation was clearly happening in the crowd. A couple of minutes later the match started.

Within a few minutes it seemed we had a corner and the Chelsea fans in the home end were cheering Kerry Dixon, which prompted the home fans to chant, “Kerry Dixon’s a wxxnker, a wxxnker.”

The corner is taken and up jumps Kerry at the near post and 0-1.

“There’s only one Kerry Dixon, one Kerry Dixon.”

We sung back loudly and with glee!

After that, the match was end to end with a cracking atmosphere and I can’t remember the scorers yet Chelsea won 3-2.

Back at home I asked my brother what he thought,

“That was fxxking brilliant, when’s the next one?”

Back at work now in a different office, I worked as a cashier in a High Street Bank. A big guy comes up,

“I saw you at the weekend,” He says in a knowing manner.

I didn’t recall seeing him.

“Where was that?” I asked.

“Oxford, you pushed right passed me!”

Ha ha its funny who turns up on here....had forgotten that question they asked your brother , they also told me I dressed like a londoner (took that as a compliment once I'd thought about it) ;-) Its funny how your memory plays tricks, Id thought that the group that steamed the old bill was just in front and we sneaked in during the disturbance, but now you say it I think we did run at them, we must have been the last ones to get in that end I reckon. Oh and it certainly wasnt me saying give up and go home :-) Great away trip that one, one of several we all did, Sheff Weds in the league cup, Arsenal away the Johnny B goal, Coventry away on a bank holiday just the two of us on the train. Zenith Cup final. Those were the day my friend !! Apologies for the extra half hour car trip was well worth it though ha ha!!! Altogether now...Steve Mcmahon is a homosexual...

I didn't do many away trips that season though did the following season back in the old First Division including like you say Sheff Wed in the league cup, Arsenal and Spurs away.

Re my brother, I thought on why they picked him, he was shorter but dressed a certain way always looking cool, I could never quite achieve that too much messing around and nothing quite fitted right.

I too remember Johnny B against Arsenal and the chant against Steve M, actually one of the guys that came to Oxford that rarely went at other times (he played football) started that in the Shed when we played Liverpool.

I recall one trip to Coventry as probably the worst match we went to as the turn out was poor, the football was dire and we either lost or drew not sure if that was the Ist or 2nd season back in the top flight though recall Alan Dicks playing for us. Compare that to Villa away where the turn out was excellent  even though we lost we sang at full volume for 90 minutes standing in the seats. I could hardly speak on the phone back at work!

It took us a while to work out how we wanted to get to the away matches, club special, driving, BR, coach. As we were chopping and changing for a while we saw things like Bristol away. We went on the coach to Bristol away in the FA cup and there was a lot of trouble. The next away match we were on the club special and on approaching the train the police were there with cameras on tripods filming everyone which to me was pointless as I thought those involved in the trouble would not be getting the club special.

One of those early highlights was Utd away which after we got the tickets we found out it was televised. We filled the end and Utd had a terrace either side of the away end so it was hard to get a song going. So we struck up 10 men went to mow and people were shouting, 'get down, get down!'

We did and so did a older lady in a business suit (?) and an old man with walking stick, everyone did and you could see the whole way along the away terrace and then altogether we stood up on ten and chanted ' Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea......you couldn't hear anymore as the whole ground responded. You couldn't even hear the people standing next to you just the loud hum of noise. Never heard anything like it  since. God knows what the players thought in the dressing room.

We won that day, Bobby Campbell used the youngsters like Damien Matthew as we had been struggling and I think we went two up and Utd pulled us back only for Townsend to break away and sprint half the pitch to seal the victory. Townsend was great for us at that time.

Some good memories.

And whilst Im here, My first game was Orient away Christmas 1975. We lost 3-1, I stood in the side paddock level with the penalty spot with my dad and uncle. My dad had previously taken me to Palace (his team) but Id insisted I wanted to support Chelsea and as soon as I was at the match I sensed a more boisterous exciting atmosphere. I remember our kit with the all important stripe down the shorts, Maybank scoring our equaliser and some pitch invasions, no doubt assisted by the prescence of the Mile End Mob who I hear used to turn up if we played over there.

On the day we were well beaten with Laurie Cunningham (RIP) outstanding but I was hooked and over the years came back for more when not playing myself, in fact still do despite living across the north sea.

It's gets funnier, my Dad and Uncle were relapsed Millwall supporters from their younger days though like you, Dad took me to watch Palace when I was about 7 or 8. Again like you I was really bored. Going to Chelsea ten years later changed that.

Was all a bit to nice at Palace, I used to love the chaos and hilarity at Chelsea especially when it got a bit spicy on the terraces!!
