Went there with a mate, lost him at half time, shortly after he drifted away from our crowd and moved away. Didnt see him till 98 waiting for a delayed flight back from Copenhagen in the CL. His opening words 14 years later were “ Where the f..k did you go at half time” Brilliant
April 18, 20197 yr Anyone go to the George Graham testimonial at Palace, May 1980? Big ruck in the Holmesdale. I think Palace hammered us in a pre season game around this time also.

Not massive numbers on either side though.

To be fair to him yes he did, usually it was a kit, first one was the 75-77 umbro kit and last one the first le coq sportif kit. And to be fair I would always get taken to a scattering of Chelsea matches each season which during the crap years wasn't bad going.

I’d say the most popular colours were yours, the burgundy white and grey one, plus light blue white and grey.

Next up it's Portsmouth away, on Tues 24th April 1984 at 19:30 35 years since midweek at Pompey. It’s making me feel very old. Remember coming back on the rattler this bloke sitting opposite me. He was about 25 to my 18, boxers face, wearing a orange and black diagonally striped Lacoste jumper which looked the nuts. Right hard looking bastard, though judging by his boat he’d taken a bit of a pasting that night. Ps It wasn’t uncommon back then to see battle scarred fans at “ tricky” away games. I had a couple of pringle jumpers but not the diamond ones bit to Ronnie Corbett for me. I had a nice Burberry jumper that I bought in Haymarket in 83. West Ham wouldn't wear Pringles apparently cause they were considered to be fackin Chelsea.

Last year at school was 81-82- South London Comprehensive. In 5th form our uniform became black. There were a good few of us who wearing black Slazenger or Pringle jumpers with black or navy Farah slacks- sometimes wonder about scousers claim to have originated casual- my older brother and loads others were wearing similar with mock crock shoes 2 years earlier. Edit: any one would think the Micky Mousers invented trainers- that and wedge haircuts seems to be their main claim to casual. Never quite got that, cause every Tom, Dick and Harry wore Dunlop Green Flash, Adidas Kick and Samba all over from the year dot. Edited April 22, 20197 yr by Ewell CFC

What's striking about this video is Londoners having London accents not that ridiculous patter they talk now.
April 22, 20197 yr Author I seem to remember adidas zx500 trainers and Nike Wimbledon tennis shoes (White with blue swoosh) being popular in 1984-86.

So Ellesse, Fila, Tacchini etc with faded lois and adidas trainers which in London was more Nike and Diadora Borg elite. London had long had it's own look which was the Golf jumper, rollneck, Gabicci, Farahs etc which partly came from the soul crowd and also the West Indian lads who went to soul alldayers (Gabicci/Farahs) and was influenced by what you could wear to get into clubs. You were not going to get in dressed like Jimmy Connors. I also had mock Crocs as well by the way ?

Agree with the black lads and their influence ( Gregory Isaacs was always wearing Gabicci on album covers) First went to Greg Edwards at the Lyceum summer 82 and other than shoes the standard uniform was what later to be called casual. We were soul boys and the name hadn’t been invented yet. Ps it was pretty football/ tribal in there, not helped by when Greg Edwards used to call out North, South, East and West London.

I think the thing with Casual is/was there were only a few bits in the media about it and most after the horse had bolted. So there has been a lot of revisionism regarding how it was and who wore what etc.. The soul crowd rarely gets mentioned as an influence and yet the scousers coming back with trainers and sportswear from Europe is quoted as if it was gospel. Fact is there is far more photographic evidence to back up the london version or its influences than the Scousers sportwear having been the start of things.

Scousers were the scruffy version, and it hasn't changed 35 years on, poor sods how ever hard they try, a scouser will always look a scruffy urchin, put them in an Armani suit and they will still have the scouser look
