The was a brief talk about it in another thread on something else, so thought I would open one just for it.

I'm looking on getting another PC in a few weeks or so, and not sure if I should be getting one with Vista.

I got XP when it came out, and had to spend ages looking for drivers to run hardware on it, not to mention the countless updates we're still having to do more than 5 years on. I'm thinking Vista is going to be the same.

I already know my modem has trouble on it.

So do I stay with XP or just go with Vista?

Is anyone using it now, had any problems, or is it running a dream?

Too right. Not only are the minimum specs for Vista through the roof, it's got more compatability problems than XP ever did, or even 2k when that was new. Then there are the numerous bugs. Nobody I know who's got the OS can see the point of it. Apart from money making, of course. The most pointless "upgrade" that's ever been released. A certified piece of Micr$oft crap.

I'm with Phillip. I recently built a new computer since my old one almost wasn't working.

I wasn't sure if I should get Vista or XP. I talked to alot of people on the net and most of them said that it's better to wait. There were way too many bugs and not everything would work with Vista. Some products didn't have Vista drivers either.

I don't know how far they have come now. Perhaps they've fixed most things, but I doubt it.

Then you have to remember that Vista demands alot of your computer so unless you want to turn all the goodies off (which would be rather boring) you will have to have a good computer. I think I read somewhere that some experts reckon that you'll need like 2gb ram for Vista to run smoothly. And that is quite alot.

I'm going with my XP at the moment. Then when Vista works well enough I'll get that and a new graphics card that supports DX10 and then I'll get a game that uses DX10 and then I'll just enjoy the wonderful graphics

Main problem is still device drivers. It has a lot of drivers in its database, but if Vista itself doesn't have a driver for that device, most of the time you can forget about using it. Not to mention Vista itself is a resource-sucker. I'm sticking with XP for another year at least.

I'm also on the brink of getting a new pc, Mod,and a mate of mine just purchased a new PC (last week). Here's what happened:

Mate:"Windows Vista ? No way, either you install XP, or I'm going somewhere else"

Seller:"Sorry sir, it's pre-installed"

Mate:"Ok, it's been a pleasure"

*mate walking to the door*

Seller: "Oohh...wait sir, maybee we can work something out after all...drop by tomorrow, please"

Guess what's gonna happen when I get my new pc ?

Generally found that it's always best to wait until Microsoft release their first Service Pack.

If it hasn't happened already, you will soon have to forget about even getting Windows XP pre-installed on PCs from Dell or similar providers.

For good or ill (mostly ill in my view) it's Vista from here on out. I don't see myself installing it in the next year or two at a minimum, my home-built PC is perfectly adequate and happily running XP.

dont go near vista. ive installed it on 3 pc`s so far, and each one has been a nightmare. and for completely different reasons. wait till sp1 comes out. or preferably sp2 if your patient.

The situation is, go with Vista and see it through, as I did with XP or go with XP again, but either end up pissed that I never went with Vista after a little while or paying ?220 for the package.

As this PC is XP and can use as a backup, I may go with Vista and see what happens? I checked the hardware and software that I use, and it seems okay on there. I found out my modem can run wiuth a new Vista driver.

Expect me here cursing about it in a little while.. but the amount of hassle this PC has been the last few months, it be a breath of fresh air.

Well if you go with Vista then please keep us updated about it. I would want to know how good/bad it really is.

I was under the impression that Vista would be without Service Packs - it would be the windows update.

I've been on Vista for about 6 months now.. I love it! (i know, bit sad).

The operating system does take up about 12Gb, so no installing on 20Gb laptops

Had any probs at all with it Matt?

My advice is not to use Microsoft products at all

I have been using Linux (various distributions) now for over 6 years and i get no problems. Viruses, spyware, malware don't really exist for linux so i don't have any antivirus software slowing down my computer either oh and best of all it's totally free.

If you can boot up your new pc with a linux installation disk when you first buy it and remove windows without ever using it you can get money back from it (though this is apparently time consuming).

linux also has windows emulators so you can run most programs on it now. ive been using linux for years, mainly as a dual boot with windows.

Quick question for Vista users.

My mother has recently got a new PC with Vista installed and tomorrow I need to talk her through some things over the phone. Now my mother is one of those people that has to be talked through computers at a very basic step by step level (i.e. click 'Start', click 'All Programs' etc etc etc).

So I need to do this tomorrow for her without ever having seen Vista.

So quite simply my questions are:

1. Do you access the control panel in exactly the same way as you do in XP?

2. Does the control panel look exactly the same?
