I remember in the 70s the only time i visited elland rd, and what hell it was...

No not the fans....I suffered menieres syndrome back then and had an episode...it wasnt a mild one either....all thru the match and most of the way home i had head spin, imbalance and nausea...it was hell

Facking Leeds .

I recall drinking in me local workingmens club in donny on the Sunday session ( best drink of the week )

The phone rings and club steward picks up anf calls out my name ‘’ donnyblue ,thas a fone call for thee ‘’ .

This was way before mobile phones. ‘ who the heck is calling me ‘ . Turns out to be a lass that i had been sawing in half from the

local Council estate and she had moved to Dirty Leeds Leeds Leeds and asked me to jump on train to Leeds then taxi to Holbeck to

her new gaff in Leeds .

she basically said she wanted her rose garden seeing too .So after club closed on for Sunday day session 14:00:back then i nipped back Home

threw me Sunday roast down me gob and then off to Dirty Leeds .

By time me taxi is pulling up outside her gaff in Holbeck / Leeds ( word of warning Holbeck is type of  area where you wipe your feet when you leave )

where was i ? Yes taxi is pulling up at her place and its pitch black at night . In other words i dont Get the full impression of the area bad or Worse .

After a night of on her body ,wakes up monday morning full of joys of life for obvious reasons . This joyfull happyness that you Get from empty bags and

all things bright and beautiful soon came crashing down when i got out of bed to draw the curtins back to let the glorious day into my life .

How wrong could i be when reet in front of my eyes from her bedroom view down the slope was ER ,ER as in Elland Road not Elizabeth Regina.

Talk about a shock to my system ,within the hour i was back in a taxi and onboard the first intercity 125 out of Dirty Leeds back to pubcaster ( donny)

even without having sloppy seconds .

Mindyou i was due to start my shift at 12 noon .

A crowd of 51,000 (with a further 9,000 locked out) watched a 4–0 Chelsea win over Leeds in the opening match of the 1972–73 season. The match was "marred by a string of infringements"; Trevor Cherry, Chris Garland and Terry Yorath were all booked, and Leeds lost David Harvey and Mick Jones to injury.

That 51,000 crowd was with only 3 sides of the stadium open, The East Stand was under construction. Image of The Shed that day. I was on terrace to the left of Shed, very squashed! images.jpeg
