September 18, 20241 yr Seen seen the news of tha passing of Salvatore "Toto" Schillaci, the man whose name will forever be synonymous with Italia '90. For those of us who were lucky enough to witness his incredible run that summer, it’s impossible to forget the magic he brought to the pitch. Before the tournament, Schillaci was virtually unknown on the global stage, a player who hadn’t really made waves outside of Italy. But something clicked during that World Cup, and he became the hero Italy needed. His energy, tenacity, and unrelenting eye for goal made him the star of the tournament. Six goals in that World Cup, and each one seemed to grow his profile. I can still vividly recall watching him storm through defences, that intense, almost wild-eyed look after each goal, and the way the stadium erupted every time he found the back of the net. It felt like he was carrying Italy through sheer willpower. He wasn’t just a goal scorer, he was the embodiment of the passion of Italian football in those weeks. After Italia '90, Schillaci didn't quite hit the same heights again, but that didn’t matter. His place in football history was cemented by what he achieved in those few glorious weeks. It was a once-in-a-lifetime run, and for those of us who witnessed it, we’ll always remember where we were when Schillaci captured the world's attention. Rest in peace, Toto. That summer will always belong to you.
September 18, 20241 yr Sad I remember him well, he dominated that tournament. Italia90 was one of my all time favorite WC's. RIP Toto
September 19, 20241 yr RIP Toto. 1990 was his year. Lit up the tournament along with Gazza, though probably the epitome of a tournament player as his career never took off afterwards.
September 19, 20241 yr First World cup I watched was Italy 90, damn that Schillaci guy was good at scoring goals, even I didn't know much about the game of football.
September 22, 20241 yr Sad to read this. I was 7 at the time of Italia 90, and recall that tournament as my first foray into international football (particularly the England vs Cameroon game). That Christmas I got a highlights video of Italia 90, and must have watched it 50 times. Schillaci dominated that video and brought so much to the World Cup. Thoughts and prayers with his family.
